Joao Palhinha to Tottenham: Everything you need to know

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich.
The deal for the 30-year-old includes an option to make the transfer permanent for €30million (£25.9m, $34.2m).
As part of this summer's transfer coverage on The Athletic, in addition to breaking news, tactical analysis and in-depth reads, our Transfers TLDR series (you can read them all here) will bring you a quick guide to each of the key deals.
A Portuguese international whose career has taken a wrong turn over the past year. In 2023, Palhinha, then of Fulham, nearly joined Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window, but the move fell apart. He eventually moved to the German side a year later.
By the time he arrived, Thomas Tuchel had been replaced by Vincent Kompany, and his role in the side no longer really existed. Palhinha was asked to be a more front-foot player, not the anchorman he was at Fulham, and he never found any rhythm.

It left him out of favour this summer and available to Spurs.

He's an old-fashioned No 6 in many ways, in the sense that he's a ball-winner first. Palhinha built his reputation last time he was in the Premier League off the back of his defensive qualities — he's one of the few footballers to have compilations built entirely out of tackles — but he's no deadweight with the ball.
True, he's not a penetrative passer, but he's accomplished in possession and capable of showing shades of technique alongside his more rugged qualities, even if that's not what he's known for.
But Tottenham are certainly getting a competitor.
Sebastian Stafford-Bloor
Given the lack of defensively robust midfielders in Tottenham's squad, Palhinha is a smart addition. He has a keen eye for how moves develop and knows when to make a defensive action, even if his hard tackling can occasionally result in fouls and yellow cards.
In 68 league games for Fulham between 2022 and 2024, he attempted 300 tackles, the highest across the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga across that timespan, and at least 76 more than any other player. Among central and defensive midfielders, his 92 interceptions ranked fifth.
Palhinha is not very comfortable breaking the lines or lifting the tempo of play with carries and risky passes, but if Thomas Frank pairs him with a more progressive option in Lucas Bergvall, Pape Sarr, or Rodrigo Bentancur at the base of midfield, Palhinha can recycle possession and protect the back line.
Anantaajith Raghuraman
Certainly nothing to worry about, but he suffered a very badly timed abductor tear in November last year, which kept him out for six weeks and forced him to miss part of mid-season training camp during the winter break.
Long-term, it was of no consequence, but at the time, with Palhinha trying to build his confidence and others' trust in him at Bayern, it could not have occurred at a worse moment.

Still, a clean bill of health since then.
Sebastian Stafford-Bloor
'Physically, (Palhinha's) a beast,' his former Braga team-mate Rui Fonte told The Athletic last year.
'He added quality of his passing and his vision. Most of the time, he keeps it simple and that helps. He knows where he is strong and where he is not so strong. His range on the pitch was his main characteristic that I saw. He would help us everywhere on the pitch.'
Fonte also said Palhinha's hard-tackling style is well-suited to the Premier League.
'In Portugal, he had to learn the hard way. At the beginning, he would get quite a few yellow cards. But he's an intelligent player. He started to time and choose when to tackle. In England, it's a little bit aggressive — in a good way. He was in a league where he's more comfortable, because the referees allow the game to flow.'

Palhinha has joined Spurs on a season-long loan deal, whereafter his new club will have the option to make the move permanent for €30m. Spurs will cover Palhinha's wage in full during his time in north London.
Palhinha joined Bayern Munich for €51m a little over a year ago on a four-year deal.

If we take it that Spurs, as has been reported, have paid a €5m (£4.3m) loan fee for Palhinha, all of it will be booked as a cost in their 2025-26 accounts. Likewise, they'll pay 100 per cent of Palhinha's wage for the next year, which won't be an immaterial amount.
Palhinha's new side can make his move permanent in a year if they choose to, with the €30m option to buy looking likely to ensure Bayern wouldn't take a loss on him if he were sold then.
Based on The Athletic's calculations, his book value in a year should be pretty much in line with that €30m figure. In the meantime, Bayern will book all of any loan fee received into their 2025-26 financials, as well as enjoy the savings on wages.

Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel makes big move to rival team

Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will leave the team where he became one of the best riders of his generation to join Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe from next season. The 25-year-old Belgian rider informed Soudal Quick-Step that he would not extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of 2026. The team said on Tuesday it has agreed to release him early. 'After taking some time to consult with our sponsors and partners, the team's ownership and management have decided that it is in the best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season,' Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement. Evenepoel signed with Soudal Quick-Step at a young age after the squad's former manager Patrick Lefevere spotted his immense potential. Under Lefevere's supervision, Evenepoel won prestigious races, including the 2022 Spanish Vuelta, two stages of the Tour de France and two titles at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He finished third at the 2024 Tour de France but withdrew from this year's edition. Widely considered the best time trialist in the world, Evenepoel remains focused on winning more Grand Tours. 'Remco stands for ambition. He doesn't just want to ride — he wants to shape cycling,' said Ralph Denk, the CEO of Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe. 'He brings not only exceptional athletic talent but also a remarkable mindset. His determination, professionalism, and relentless drive to succeed are truly inspiring.' Evenepoel's move will strengthen Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, where he will team up with Primož Roglič and Florian Lipowitz, who finished third in last month's Tour de France. 'Evenepoel's arrival marks more than just a milestone for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, it is a clear signal,' the team said. 'With renewed confidence and bold ambition, the team is setting its course to become one of the most attractive forces on the international cycling stage in the years to come.' Evenepoel hadn't yet commented Tuesday, though he posted Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe's 'Welcome Remco!' message on his Instagram account. A year ago in Paris, Evenepoel become the first rider to sweep the road race and time trial at the Summer Games. ___ AP sports:

Rams RB Kyren Williams agrees to 3-year contract extension worth up to $33 million, AP source says

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Running back Kyren Williams agreed to a three-year, $33 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Rams hadn't yet announced their deal with Williams, their productive starter for the past two seasons. The deal includes $23 million in guaranteed money. Williams has produced back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons as the Rams' starting running back, and he made the Pro Bowl in 2023 while finishing third in the NFL in yards rushing. He has rushed for 2,582 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 464 yards receiving and five more TDs over three seasons as a versatile component of Sean McVay's offense. Williams reported to training camp last month as scheduled, and he has participated in all practices instead of holding out as he headed into the final year of his rookie deal. The fifth-round pick out of Notre Dame said he never seriously considered a holdout or a hold-in, preferring to keep his focus on producing for the Rams. 'I want to play for the Rams,' said Williams, a boyhood Rams fan from St. Louis. 'That's who I want to stay with, and I know it will work out.' Williams is due to make $5.34 million this season in the final year of his rookie deal, and he will remain the lynchpin of the Rams' running game even though the team has invested in the running back position with more enthusiasm than most opponents in recent seasons. Los Angeles general manager Les Snead has drafted a running back in eight consecutive drafts, and he now has one of the NFL's top-10 highest-paid running backs despite drafting Blake Corum in the third round in 2023 and trading up to pick Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round last April. Williams had career highs of 1,299 yards rushing and 14 rushing touchdowns last season, accounting for a league-high 73.6% of the Rams' rushing output. But he also fumbled five times in the regular season and again in the postseason, and Williams has been working on grip strength during the offseason to avoid a repeat. ___ AP NFL:

Teddy Bridgewater nears return to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Teddy Bridgewater is nearing a return to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Bridgewater is visiting the team and the Bucs plan to sign him. The Buccaneers will be the eighth team in 12 seasons for the 32-year-old Bridgewater. Bridgewater coached his former high school in Miami to a Class 3A state championship last fall and then returned to the NFL in late December to serve as a backup to Jared Goff for the playoff-bound Lions. He would provide insurance for the four-time defending NFC South champions behind Baker Mayfield. The Buccaneers also have veteran Kyle Trask, who has thrown 11 passes in four seasons since he was a second-round pick in 2021. Mayfield returned to practice Tuesday after missing a couple of days because of a hand contusion. Bridgewater said last month that he was suspended from coaching Miami Northwestern High School because he provided players with financial benefits that he says he reported to the school. "I'm not going anywhere," Bridgewater said on social media post. "And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem." Bridgewater, a first-round pick by Minnesota in 2014, is 33-32 as a starter and made the Pro Bowl after his second season when he led the Vikings to an 11-5 record. He also spent time with the Jets, Saints, Panthers, Broncos and Dolphins. Bridgewater has completed 66.4% of his passes for 15,120 yards, 75 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard was an assistant coach in Miami in 2022 when Bridgewater backed up Tua Tagovailoa. Buccaneers defensive line coach Charlie Strong was Bridgewater's head coach at Louisville. Tampa Bay's quarterback room also includes Michael Pratt and Connor Bazelak. Pratt, a seventh-round pick out of Tulane by Green Bay in 2024 who signed to the Buccaneers' practice squad last August, has been sidelined by a back injury. Bazelak signed as an undrafted free agent out of Bowling Green where he spent the final two of his six college seasons.
