Sam Shankland after beating Gukesh: ‘To demolish the world champion is a good way to turn (the tournament) around'

World champion Gukesh Dommaraju's woes in the faster time control events continued as he lost his fourth round clash at the St Louis Rapid and Blitz tournament to bottom-of-the-table Sam Shankland, before holding on to two draws against French grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Uzbek rival Nodirbek Abdusattorov. After six round of rapid, the reigning world champion has two wins, two defeats and two draws at the tournament in St Louis which is part of the Grand Chess Tour. Gukesh had started the tournament in the USA with a loss to the veteran Levon Aronian, who said he had won by playing 'grandpa style' of slow chess. The Indian teenager, who became the youngest world champion in chess history last year after defeating Ding Liren, had topped the tournament standings after the rapid portion at the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia tournament in Zagreb in June-July, raising hopes that he was starting to ace the faster time controls as well. The defeat to Shankland came in 62 moves, after Gukesh was left with just a rook and pawn on the board and the American GM up a knight. Shankland had started the first day of the event with a 0-3 record, losing all three of his games on day 1. Then he bounced back after handing Gukesh a defeat. After giving away a slight edge to his opponent early on in the game, Gukesh, in fact, was in a worse position on the board from the 17th move itself when he pushed his queen to a5 ( Gukesh was a knight down from the 19th move itself. 'To start 0-3 (in the tournament) is really tough. But then to come in and demolish the world champion is a good way to turn it around,' Shankland said after the win over Gukesh. 'It's a good relief after yesterday when I looked like I am going to lose every single game. I'm still not happy with my score at all, but hopefully the next rounds will be better. I'm old enough to not get super emotional after getting punched in the face, I guess.'

'I'm taking this time to not only see myself but get myself a certain level of help that overall is going to reflect who I truly am in my heart and my spirit… not allowing this moment – but accepting this moment – to be more,' Richardson said. She added that she wanted her family and fans to hold her to high standards. 'I refuse to run away but to face everything that comes to me head on because everything on the other side is great but you've got to go through in order to get there.' Poll Should Christian Coleman have pressed charges against Sha'Carri Richardson? Yes, it was necessary. No, they should resolve it privately. Richardson withdrew from the 100m semi-finals at the US Championships but, as reigning world champion, she has secured a place in the event at next month's World Championships in Tokyo. Next vice-captain? Does Shubman Gill deserve a spot in T20I team?

With the Asia Cup 2025 on the horizon, the Indian selectors are set to meet to select a potent squad for the continental tournament as the Asian giants head into the event as the defending champions. Among several names which have sprung up for selection, Shubman Gill is among the front-runners to make his comeback in the T20I from leading India to a 2-2 series draw in the five-match Test series against England, Gill's stocks have risen rapidly in the past few months. He led from the front throughout the series finishing as the leading run scorer across both teams. Gill's prolific run and astute leadership have caught the selectors' eyes, and he's become a part of discussions to make a T20 last played a T20I in Sri Lanka, where he was also appointed as the new vice-captain of the team in both white-ball formats. He gave an audition for his leadership during the Zimbabwe tour after the T20 World Cup and led India to a 4-1 series win. As the discussions about Gill's comeback start all over again, questions have been raised on his place in the current India T20I setup. Gill has played 21 T20Is so far and scored 578 runs at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27 with one hundred and three IPL strike rate also reads the same (138.71) with 3866 runs from 115 innings at an average of 39.44. While Gill has impressive numbers in his T20 career, he might not be an ideal fit in the current Indian T20I setup. Ever since Suryakumar Yadav was handed over the leadership duties of the T20Is, he has continued the same philosophy from his predecessor Rohit Sharma, as the young side has batted with a fearless Gill step up his T20 game?Since July 2024, India has breached the 200-run mark eight out of the 13 times they've batted first. The Indian batting right from the top to bottom is filled with fierce stroke makers as they take the opposition head-on right from the word go. Courtesy of their belligerent strokeplay, they've posted humongous scores such as 297/6, 283/1, 247/9, 234/2, 221/9 Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, amongst others, all have flourished in the last 12 months, batting with an ultra-aggressive approach as per the modern standards of T20 cricket. On the other hand, Gill is known for taking his time to settle before shifting gears, which is evident from his approach in the IPL as bringing him back would hinder India's batting approach as they already boast a formidable batting lineup feared by the entire world. Moreover, Gill's place in the playing XI will also not be guaranteed as India already have a settled opening pair in Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who complement each other beautifully. Moreover, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who's also known for his aggressive strokeplay, is also waiting in the vice-captaincy conundrumThe number three and four spots have been taken up by Tilak Varma and captain Suryakumar Yadav. With Gill being a top-order batter, playing him at any other spot other than the top three would be a waste of his potential. Hence, with all the spots sealed in the top four, there doesn't seem to be a place for Gill in the selection committee had appointed Axar Patel as the vice-captain of the T20I side in January 2025 for the five-match series against England. The all-rounder has been one of the most important players for the team across formats due to his match-winning prowess with both bat and Gill is indeed making a comeback in the team, he will reclaim his vice-captaincy, which would be an injustice to Patel, given his massive contribution to the team in recent times. The southpaw played a key role in the T20 World Cup triumph with his all-round show in the Prince will have to wait for his turnHence, bringing Gill out of nowhere into contention is going to create more problems than solving any and would disturb the status quo of the side. While Gill is touted as the future of Indian cricket and deserves all the praise, having proven himself in both Tests and ODIs, T20Is are not his forte the moment, it's best to keep him away from the shortest format and wait for his opportunity to arrive. The Indian T20I team has all the ingredients to defend their World title in 2025 on home soil. It's in the best interest of the team that captain Suryakumar Yadav is being continuously given a free hand to operate his men, as he's earned that luxury with the kind of results he's been able to achieve so far as Shubman Gill is concerned, the prince will have to carve his path towards T20I reckoning, and currently, he seems far away from his goal.- EndsTune InMust Watch
