Field hearing will tackle barriers to geothermal energy

E&E News12-05-2025

A House Natural Resources subcommittee will hold an oversight field hearing Monday in Utah to discuss strategies for removing barriers to geothermal energy development on federal lands.
The Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources hearing in Cedar City, Utah, follows the full committee's passage last week of its portion of the massive reconciliation budget bill that includes a section addressing increased geothermal lease sales.
The Bureau of Land Management during the Biden administration approved 14 geothermal power projects that would have the capacity to power about 700,000 homes. BLM in the first few months of President Donald Trump's second term has similarly advanced geothermal.

The agency last month held a large lease sale in Utah that generated $5.7 million in bids on 14 parcels covering more than 50,000 acres, and it has announced plans to hold additional geothermal lease sales this year in Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada. BLM in March also approved the Newcastle Geothermal Development project in Cedar City, Utah.

DOGE Is on a Recruiting Spree

By Makena Kelly and Vittoria Elliott Jun 6, 2025 12:11 PM While Elon Musk and Donald Trump post through their breakup, DOGE shows no signs of slowing down—and potential recruits are being told they can make up to $195,000 a year. Photo-Illustration: WIRED STAFF; GETTY IMAGES The relationship between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump may have publicly erupted this week, but the billionaire's so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is currently on a recruiting spree, WIRED has learned. DOGE appears to be reaching out specifically to technologists who have previously worked for the government, even some of those who left as part of the administration's campaign to drastically shrink the federal workforce, according to two sources who spoke to WIRED on the condition of anonymity to protect their privacy. One candidate was told that even though they recently left the government under the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP), they might still be eligible for a position at DOGE. DOGE is looking to hire tech workers in development, operations, software, and product for two-year terms, a different recruit tells WIRED. Potential recruits are being told, according to sources, that the pay range remains on the higher end of the government pay scale, between $120,000 and $195,000 per year. Applicants are, like WIRED previously reported, still being put through a multi-step process that includes a screening call, a take-home technical assessment, and two follow-up interviews. DOGE applicants are required to complete a take-home project where they create a tool to analyze federal regulations in the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR). For the permanent USDS applicants, they're asked to submit their code to a private file-sharing platform called Kiteworks. Applicants are asked to publicly upload their code to GitHub. An email to candidates viewed by WIRED notes that successful applicants may end up working on projects like 'leveraging AI to improve medical services for veterans,' 'streamlining federal aid applications from Americans who experience natural disasters,' and 'improving the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).' (WIRED previously spoke to a DOGE applicant who reported similar information.) The executive order Trump signed that created DOGE placed the group inside what was formerly called the US Digital Service, a small Obama-era organization of tech talent where workers serve two to three year terms in government before heading back to the private sector. The executive order renamed USDS the US DOGE Service and established a 'temporary DOGE organization' as well. Both bodies are currently hiring, sources tell WIRED. The US DOGE Service and DOGE 'are basically the same thing now,' one source tells WIRED. Since Trump came into office and the otherwise small team of technologists at USDS became the staging ground for the Musk-led digital coup, the USDS has lost the vast majority of its staff, and has struggled to bring in new talent, WIRED previously reported. Meanwhile, many members of the original DOGE strikeforce, which included young, inexperienced engineers who accessed some of the most sensitive data at government agencies, are now being converted into full-time government employees within federal agencies. Last week, Luke Farritor and Edward Coristine, who has gone by 'Big Balls' online and previously worked for a telecommunications firm known for hiring former blackhat hackers were brought on full-time at the General Services Administration (GSA). Sources also tell WIRED that Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla engineer and one of the lead DOGE affiliates who spearheaded the group's operations at the GSA, is considering revamping the Presidential Innovation Fellows program, which brings technologists into government and places them within different agencies to improve government services. The program has been unable to bring in new talent this year because of the government-wide hiring freeze. Shedd is the director of GSA's Technology and Transformation Services (TTS), a subagency that provides technical expertise to agencies across government. 'Thomas Shedd and his bosses created a problem by collapsing and getting rid of all of their tech talent, and now they have these projects they want to prosecute to implement new capabilities and that requires tech talent,' says one GSA tech worker.

Trump Vows To ‘Rapidly Defeat Inflation' To Help ‘Millions and Millions' of Americans Achieve Their ‘Dream of Homeownership'

President Donald Trump has boldly promised to 'rapidly bring down inflation' to make homeownership more accessible to millions of Americans while addressing the National Association of Realtors® Legislative Meetings 2025 in a pre-recorded speech. Speaking to industry leaders, the pre-recorded video aired at the Washington, DC, event, the president said he believes that reducing inflation will in turn help to bring down interest rates, a move that will put homeownership 'within the reach of millions and millions for the first time in years.' 'I love people that are in the real estate business,' Trump began. 'I have a little bit of a proclivity for it. You play a vital role in helping Americans achieve the dream of homeownership, and together, we will make the American dream more attainable than ever before. 'We are working to rapidly defeat inflation, which will bring down interest rates and put homeownership within the reach of millions of millions for the first time in years.' April's inflation rate—2.3%—is 'much lower than expected,' Trump noted. 'Likewise, income soared by 0.8% in one month, almost triple expectations and close to record territory. Mortgage rates are down, we're slashing unnecessary regulations, and we are working to pass the largest tax cuts and reforms in American history.' April's inflation rate is the lowest since February 2021, but it's not expected to motivate the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. The Fed will be meeting mid-June and will announce any decision on rates when it wraps up its two days of meetings. Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly slammed Jerome Powell for not taking further action—despite the Fed chair claiming that longer-term rates will likely remain higher because of the risk of 'volatile' inflation. Homebuying help is at hand Affordability has been a major challenge for potential buyers despite home listing inventory seeing gains in regions like the West (+40.7% year over year) and the South (+32.9% YoY), according to the May 2025 Monthly Housing Report. Mortgage rates continue to hover near the 7% mark—which is leading potential buyers to take their time committing to a home. New listings also inched up last week—up 4.2% compared with the same time last year. Homeowners looking to build a new home are also faced with challenges, as Trump's 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum took effect on June 5. 'Higher tariffs on steel and aluminum are likely to raise the cost of key construction materials, and these added costs could be passed through to homebuyers through higher home prices,' says Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Following this latest tariff hike by Trump last week, the National Association of Home Builders continued to express concern over the toll the increased costs will have on homebuilders—and the wider housing market. 'President Trump's move to double steel and aluminum tariffs will have a negative impact on housing affordability by further disrupting building material supply chains and fueling business uncertainty,' NAHB Chairman Buddy Hughes told But Trump, in his pre-recorded speech to the NAR, thanked industry leaders for their support of the 'big, beautiful bill,' which is currently sitting with the Senate for review. 'I want to thank the Realtors® for your support of the one big, beautiful bill, the most important piece of legislation in many years,' said Trump. 'This landmark legislation, in fact, will preserve the small-business tax deductions and so many want and need, [that] so many real estate agents are just demanding. 'It will stop trillions of dollars in tax hikes on American families and put more money in the pockets of homebuyers by raising take-home pay for the typical family by an estimated $13,000. Think of that, $13,000 with your help, a record number of Americans will achieve financial independence and find a home that really fits their dreams and aspirations, something very, very beautiful.' The tax and spending package is expected to cut trillions from the budget, but the Congressional Budget Office said it's going to add trillions to the national debt. The president is pushing the Senate to approve the bill and get it to his desk to sign by July 4. Ties with leaders at every level A president's remarks at the NAR meetings has been a tradition since 1921. For example, NAR has invited every sitting president to its yearly conference. The first time Trump was in office, he delivered a live speech to attendees in 2019. Herbert Hoover, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush are among the past presidents to speak at the conference. NAR said it does not pay a fee for a president to speak.

Why Nucor Stock Jumped 10% This Week

New tariffs could drive steel prices higher. Nucor has invested billions to grow its earnings power. The steel company should see a surge in free cash flow as capital projects ramp up operations. 10 stocks we like better than Nucor › Not every investor wants to invest in a cyclical sector. But it can be an important addition to a well-diversified portfolio. Nucor (NYSE: NUE) is the largest pure-play steel and steel products company in North America. While it is most commonly thought of as more of an income stock than a growth stock, shares popped as much as nearly 12% at one point this week. The stock has now moved off a three-year low it hit in early April. That was aided by the 10% surge it has made this week as of early Friday morning, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. This week's move came after President Donald Trump announced the doubling of steel tariffs to 50% and officially implemented that raised level on June 4. That could be a meaningful move for the leading domestic steel company. Nucor has poured more than $10 billion into growth investments over the past five years. Many of those projects are just beginning to contribute to earnings. Two important projects will also begin ramping up operations later this year. Its largest current project -- a new greenfield sheet mill in West Virginia -- is expected to complete construction by the end of next year. That makes it a good time to look at an investment in Nucor. It looks to be near the bottom of a free-cash-flow cycle with capital spending beginning to decrease in coming years as those investments start generating revenue. Nucor generated over $8 billion in free cash flow in 2022 and another $5 billion in 2023. It dropped to negative $495 million in the first quarter, though. That could mark a point close to the bottom if the U.S. economy continues to grow. The tariffs supporting steel prices will only reinforce the strength in Nucor's business. Investors may be sensing a turn for this cyclical stock with the tariff catalyst. That helps explain the outsize move in Nucor stock this week.
