Georgia oyster harvesting season closing
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (WSAV) — Georgia's state salt waters will be closed to commercial and recreational oyster harvesting for human consumption Sunday.
Salt waterways are closed to harvesting during warmer months when the risk of shellfish-related illnesses are elevated, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Coastal Division spokesperson said.
Vibrio parahaemolyticus are bacteria that naturally live in coastal waters but are found in higher numbers when water temperatures are warmer. The bacteria can cause stomach cramps, vomiting and fever if consumed.
Raw or undercook oysters are often a way to contract Vibrio, the CDC reports.
The seasonal closure will go into effect at 6 a.m. June 1 and extends through midnight on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025. Oyster harvesting season is expected to reopen at 7 a.m. Oct. 1.
The closure applies to all salt waters from the Georgia-South Carolina state line to the Georgia-Florida border.

The Turkey Poult Survey helps the DNR Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) is an important survey that helps track statewide and regional turkey reproduction. Officials said you don't have to make any special efforts to locate turkeys, just let them know if you see one during everyday activities. Participants should record all data related to turkey poults, which are baby turkeys, hens with or without broods and gobblers. If you don't happen to see a turkey all month, you can record that in the survey as well. The survey asks for the location of the area the turkey was seen in, like a WMA, state park or national forest. You can also use the map to select the area you saw it in. You can log your observations during June, July and August. The DNR asked that you do not log trail camera observations, since they could bias the survey results. Savannah Impact Program to hold gun awareness event

The event calls for an end to gun violence in Savannah and is open to the public. Atrium on Eighty taking donations for families of two children who passed
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Vigils are being held for two children who died last week in tragic incidents. Landyn Ahmir Wilkerson, 4, passed away on May 29 from what Statesboro investigators are calling a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to the Statesboro PD, the evidence suggests that Wilkerson got access to an unsecured firearm and discharged it. Emily Grace Mayo, 9, was killed on May 27 in a tragic murder suicide. According to GBI, James Lee Mayo, 37, shot and killed his daughter in the parking lot of the Brooklet City Park before turning the gun on himself. Community members wishing to show support for the families of Emily Grace Mayo and Landyn Ahmir Wilkerson are invited to bring food and paper goods to the Atrium on Eighty, located at 22700 US-80, Statesboro, where they will be hosting the families following each service.
