US discussing latest Gaza ceasefire proposal, White House says

Reuters6 hours ago
WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) - The United States continues to discuss a ceasefire proposal for a 60-day truce in Gaza between Israel and Hamas that the Palestinian militant group has accepted, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday.
"I don't think it's a coincidence that Hamas accepted this proposal after the president of the United States posted a very strong statement about this conflict on Truth Social yesterday," Leavitt told reporters at a press briefing at the White House.

Nexstar CEO reveals merger with Tegna that would reshape local media landscape

Nexstar, the largest owner of local television stations in the United States, announced a $6.2 billion deal to acquire rival Tegna, aiming to significantly reshape the local media landscape. The proposed merger would result in Nexstar controlling 265 local TV stations across 44 states and Washington, D.C., reaching approximately 80 percent of American households, far exceeding the current 39 percent ownership limit. Nexstar CEO Perry Sook praised the Trump administration's initiatives, expressing confidence that the Federal Communications Commission would loosen regulatory limits to approve the deal, despite existing restrictions. Public interest groups and local reporters have raised alarms, warning that such extensive media consolidation could harm competition and negatively impact the quality and independence of local news. The merger, anticipated for the second half of 2026, is not yet finalized and faces a competing offer from Sinclair, the nation's second-largest local TV broadcaster, which has also bid to merge with Tegna.

Trump administration revises ‘good moral character' citizenship requirement

The Trump administration is expanding the 'good moral character' test for US citizenship, requiring a 'holistic assessment' of applicants' behavior and contributions. US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officers will now consider positive attributes like community involvement and education, alongside negative factors such as repeated traffic infractions or harassment, even if lawful. A USCIS spokesperson stated that US citizenship should be reserved for 'the world's best of the best' and that the agency screens for 'anti-American activity' when vetting applications. This policy is part of Trump's broader agenda to crack down on immigration, which includes potential mass deportations and reviewing immigrants' social media for reasons to reject applications. Experts suggest the new guidance aims to restrict legal immigration by broadening grounds for denial, with concerns that its discretionary nature could lead to arbitrary enforcement.
