4 people shot, 3 dead in Bushbuckridge

The Citizen03-06-2025
Four people were shot in separate incidents in Bushbuckridge between Sunday and Monday.
Mpumalanga News reports that, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the police received information about an Ethiopian national who had been shot on the R536 near Cork Trust in the Calcutta policing area yesterday.
'Upon their arrival, the officers found the victim seated behind the steering wheel of a blue VW Caravelle Combi. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical services [EMS],' she says.
Ndubane says it is alleged that the victim was en route to visit a friend in Somerset Trust when he was ambushed by people driving in a white Toyota bakkie. 'The suspects reportedly opened fire while the vehicle was in motion. Some spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. The victim's vehicle [was] riddled [with bullets],' Ndubane says.
In another incident on Sunday, the police responded to a shooting at a tavern in Oakley near Mkhuhlu in the Calcutta policing area at about 00:30. They found a silver-grey VW Polo TSI parked at the entrance of the tavern with bullet holes and the windows shattered.
'The driver had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead by EMS on the scene,' Ndubane says.
She says there was a woman inside the car, but she only sustained some injuries. This victim was taken to hospital for treatment.
Some spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. The motive for the shooting is unknown, and no arrests have been made yet.
Earlier that same evening, the SAPS responded to another shooting incident at a tavern in Marite Trust.
The officers discovered the body of a man with two gunshot wounds. EMS declared him dead on the scene. No arrests have been made, and investigations continue.
The SAPS urge anyone with information that may assist in these investigations to contact Lieutenant Colonel Skhumbuzo Ceko on 082 992 9902. They may also report anonymously on the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS app.

Ian Cameron, DA MPs injured in brutal ‘targeted' attack

Ian Cameron injured in smash and grab. Images via X: @iancameron23 Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson Ian Cameron has recounted a horrific smash and grab he experienced alongside two fellow Democratic Alliance (DA) MPs in Cape Town's Philippi township. The trio – which includes Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell – were ambushed after visiting a nearby SAPS training academy. IAN CAMERON AND OTHER DA MPS INJURED IN CAPE TOWN SMASH AND GRAB On Tuesday, 19 August, Ian Cameron and fellow DA MPs Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell escaped a smash-and-grab after conducting official duties. ADVERTISEMENT The trio were returning from a surprise inspection of the SAPS Philippi Training Academy when their vehicle was ambushed. A group of unknown suspects broke the window of their car with bricks and brutally assaulted Cameron and his colleagues. The quick-thinking Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson retaliated with his own firearm, firing shots at the suspects. A bloodied Cameron suffered broken teeth and required facial stitches. His colleagues sustained minor head and neck injuries. Ian Cameron believes that it was a targeted attack on himself. He posted on his X account: 'This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will not deter us. We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure accountability and safety. ADVERTISEMENT According to authorities, the motive for the attack is not yet known. 'OUT OF CONTROL CRIME' The DA condemned the attack, calling on police to increase their presence in high-crime areas. The party's Chief Whip, George Michalakis, told IOL: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. 'We again call on the Minister of Police to properly resource SAPS in crime-ridden areas such as Philippi.' Ian Cameron is lucky to be alive after a horrific smash and grab. Image via X: @iancameron23 Parliament also denounced the criminal attack. 'The Presiding Officers express deep concern, noting that such shocking acts of criminality not only endanger the lives of elected representatives and members of the public but also undermine Parliament's constitutional duty to hold organs of state accountable through oversight', read its statement. HELEN ZILLE'S NARROW ESCAPE Ian Cameron isn't the only DA member to fall victim to a brutal attack. In 2003, Helen Zille narrowly escaped death when her Corsa was shot at in an attempted hijacking in Khayelitsha. At the time of the attack, Helen was driving home one evening after doing constituency work in the informal settlement. The bullet struck the back of her car seat, with Helen claiming that the springs of the cushion likely shielded her. DO YOU THINK IAN CAMERON'S SMASH AND GRAB WAS A RANDOM OR TARGETED ATTACK? Traffic officers and colleagues bring hope to Khutsong disability home

A group of traffic officers and other officials joined forces this week to bring relief to a Khutsong care facility. On August 18, traffic officers from the Merafong City Local Municipality, Rand West, and Mogale City were joined by members of the Gauteng Traffic Police, SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and officials from the Department of Correctional Services for a special outreach programme. The group gathered at the Zanele Mtshali Disability Home in Khutsong, also known as the Zani Home, as part of the Western Corridor Women's Month celebrations. They donated food, toiletries, and blankets to the facility, which provides care for severely disabled residents, many of whom have no other place to call home. Located near the Khutsong Community Hall, the Zanele Mtshali Disability Home has long served as a vital refuge for the vulnerable. The donation was welcomed as a meaningful gesture of solidarity and community support.

Taxi industry under siege by criminals says Santaco

The president of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), Motlhabane Tsebe, has said the taxi industry is under siege from criminal elements. Tsebe addressed the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday following the killing of a 27-year-old e-hailing driver at Maponya Mall last week. Four unknown men allegedly killed the driver, torched his car, and injured two other people in the attack. Although many blamed the taxi industry for the violence, Tsebe insisted that criminals were behind the killing. 'We must admit this criminality that is committed in our name. We humbly ask for prayers in the community as we are facing infiltration by criminals as we are cleaning up the industry,' he said. Tsebe stressed that Santaco has a zero-tolerance approach to violence. 'Santaco will immediately expel any operator, driver, or member involved in the attack or any act of violence. This is not just a talk shop; it is a promise. Enough is enough,' he said. He urged communities to report law-breaking taxi operators to the police. 'Violence is a crime and crime has no place in the taxi industry and the South African community,' Tsebe said. Tsebe revealed that Santaco would assist with funeral arrangements for the slain driver. 'I sent my team to speak to the family, to ask them if they would give us that right to take the body from Gauteng to KZN and also to bury the body,' he said. He confirmed that the industry would cover the undertaker's costs. Santaco is planning a day of prayer at Maponya Mall after the funeral. 'We also spoke to Soweto ministries because we need divine intervention in this regard. We are sending a team to the hospital to check on those still recovering, and then after that, we will do a prayer day at Maponya Mall,' Tsebe said. Tsebe noted that the outrage directed at the taxi industry comes as Santaco prepares to test a cashless system for paying taxi fares.
