Chinese Man, 51, Jailed in Singapore for Stealing Valuables From Overhead Compartment on Scoot Flight
A 51-year-old man was jailed for 10 months on Wednesday, May 28, for stealing from a fellow passenger on a Scoot flight.
Zhang Kun, a Chinese national, earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of theft.
The incident happened on March 16 on flight TR465 from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Zhang sat three rows behind the victim, who had a backpack in the overhead compartment with a wallet and a sling bag.
The victim and his companion got up from their seats during the night trip to join their friends at the rear of the aircraft in celebrating a birthday.
Zhang hurried to the overhead compartment, grabbed the rucksack, and carried it to his own seat after realizing the victim was no longer there.
After locating the wallet, he took a credit card, RM100 (S$30), and S$200 in cash. After that, he put the wallet back and put the backpack back in the overhead bin.
The passenger sitting next to Zhang saw what Zhang was doing.
Following the plane's landing, Zhang's companion went up to the victim and requested that he examine his backpack.
The passenger directed the victim toward Zhang once he realized that his credit card and cash were gone.
While Zhang's companion filed a police report, the victim confronted Zhang and banned his credit card.
Zhang was observed going to the bathroom many times before the police showed up.
Although Zhang was taken into custody later that evening, he did not disclose his actions about the victim's belongings, and the police were unable to retrieve them.
Zhang had collaborators aboard the Scoot flight, according to investigations. They were scheduled to spend two hours in Singapore before continuing on to Hong Kong, just like him.
In the past, Zhang denied taking the items and requested "proof" from the prosecution that he had done so.
Theft carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison, a fine, or both.
In March, the police presented the Public Spiritedness Award to the passenger who informed the victim of the theft.
Following the arrival of the flight, K Visvanathan provided "crucial information", leading to Zhang's arrest at Changi Airport Terminal 1.
Commander of Airport Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police M Malathi told CNA, "I would like to commend Visvanathan for his public-spiritedness."
"Such vigilance goes a long way in the swift detection and substantiation of such crimes, which are often challenging to uncover due to their transient nature," ACP added.

Three women and one man aged between 47 and 61 were arrested and charged on suspicion of involvement in multiple spiritual 'blessing' scams. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a press release on Friday (June 6) that they had received a report three days prior from a woman who was allegedly cheated by the three others in Chinatown. "The first woman had initially approached the victim seeking directions to a Chinese physician. A second woman then intervened, claiming knowledge of a suitable physician but explained that consultations could only occur outside the premises due to overcrowding," the release stated. This second woman wanted the victim to pose as her relative, and the trio went to meet the third woman, who claimed to be a Chinese physician and told the victim she was "experiencing misfortune due to negative spiritual elements". "The three woman and the victim then arranged to meet at Hong Lim Park and the victim was convinced to surrender $700 in cash and a gold necklace with a Guan Yin pendant to the 'Chinese physician', who then placed the items in a black plastic bag and performed a purported blessing ritual," the release read. She was instructed to leave the bag unopened for a month underneath her bed, but examined it the next day and discovered her possessions had been replaced by leaves. A similar incident occurred on June 4, where another victim was approached by two women in Clementi. Upon noticing she had cash in her bag, the women convinced her to place her belongings, amounting to $700, into a black trash bag for safekeeping. However, the victim later discovered that her money had gone missing. SPF conducted ground investigations and utilised CCTV footage to establish the identities of the three woman and another man believed to be working with them. They were arrested on June 5, and cash amounting to S$1,311 and 10,050 yuan (S$1,800) was seized from them as case exhibits. The four were charged on Friday for conspiracy to cheat under Section 420 and Section 109 of the Penal Code 1871, with the offence carrying a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine. "The police would like to remind members of the public to be wary of strangers who claim to provide spiritual help or blessing services. No legitimate religious practitioner will ask for your money or valuables to be surrendered for any blessing ritual," the press release read. "Members of the public should be vigilant and alert their elderly family members about such scams. Violent dispute between stepfather and stepson erupts in Yishun rental flat; both arrested
SINGAPORE: An argument between a stepfather and his stepson escalated into a physical altercation at a rental flat in Yishun on Saturday morning, resulting in both men being arrested. The incident occurred around 10am at Block 510A Yishun Street 51. Eyewitnesses told Shin Min Daily News that police officers were seen arriving at the scene shortly after the commotion broke out.
