Umpire scolds Emma Raducanu for asking her to address crying baby in the stands at Cincinnati Open
There are some places where it's not appropriate to have a crying child — a theater, a wedding, a professional tennis match, for example. Emma Raducanu pointed out the latter on Monday during her match at the Cincinnati Open against top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka. A crying child in the stands disturbed her as she prepared to serve at a critical juncture in the deciding third set while trailing, 4-3. Raducanu paused play and appeared to ask the chair umpire to address the situation. The umpire's initial response wasn't audible on the broadcast, but prompted Raducanu to respond: "It's been, like 10 minutes." The umpire, perplexed, chided back: "It's a child," she said. "Do you want me to send the child out of the stadium?" Raducanu didn't have to answer. A round of yeses emanated from the stands in support of the idea. Raducanu just smiled and gestured toward the voices in the stands who supported her. The umpire at that point conceded. "I can call in," she said. " But we need to continue for the moment." This drew a round of applause from the stands, and Raducanu continued with her serve and scored a point as Sabalenka failed to hit a volley over the net. Sabalenka ultimately held to win the match, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) and the third-round prize money of $60,400 that came with advancing to the fourth round. It wasn't clear how the issue of the crying baby was resolved.

Northern Virginia Housing Market Cools Slightly as Inventory Grows
Sales volume and prices remain steady, but longer market times and rising supply reflect a more cautious buyer landscape FAIRFAX, Va., Aug. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Northern Virginia housing market in July 2025 showed signs of moderation compared to the same period last year, according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors® (NVAR). While total sold dollar volume and median home prices saw modest increases year-over-year, growing inventory and extended days on market suggest shifting dynamics in how buyers and sellers are approaching today's real estate environment. Total sold dollar volume reached just over $1.41 billion in July, up 2.6% from July 2024, and the number of units sold stood at 1,612 — a 1.6% decrease from the previous year. The region's median sold price rose 3.4% year-over-year to $760,073, reflecting steady buyer interest — but at a more measured level than what was seen during the peak pandemic-era housing market. Shop Top Mortgage Rates Personalized rates in minutes A quicker path to financial freedom Your Path to Homeownership "We're seeing a market that is recalibrating," said NVAR CEO Ryan McLaughlin. "Buyers are still active, and the market remains strong, but at a more measured intensity than in recent years. This shift is influencing both prices and expectations for buyers and sellers alike." The number of active listings rose sharply to 2,530 in July of this year, a 43.4% increase compared to July 2024. Months of supply also increased to 1.9, up 39.4% year-over-year, signaling a loosening of the inventory constraints that have defined much of the past few years. Meanwhile, the average days on market climbed to 20 days, a 25% increase, indicating that homes are sitting longer as buyers weigh their options. "After several years of tight inventory and rapid sales, what we're seeing now is a more balanced environment," McLaughlin added. "Demand remains strong, and today's market rewards sellers who price strategically and stay attuned to buyer expectations." The July data paints a picture of a market in transition. While the fundamentals remain relatively strong, with prices and overall volume holding steady, the increase in supply and shift in buyer behavior suggest a more tempered real estate climate heading into the fall. "This shift is a sign that the market is normalizing," said NVAR President Casey Menish, Pearson Smith Realty. "Buyers are approaching their decisions more carefully, and sellers are adjusting to longer timelines and increased competition. We're moving away from extremes, and that's a healthy development for long-term market stability," she said. US deficit grows to $291 billion in July despite surge in tariff revenue
(Reuters) -The U.S. government's budget deficit grew nearly 20% in July to $291 billion despite a $21 billion jump in customs duty collections from President Donald Trump's tariffs, with outlays growing faster than receipts, the Treasury Department said on Tuesday. The deficit for July was up 19%, or $47 billion, from July 2024. Receipts for the month grew 2%, or $8 billion, to $338 billion, while outlays jumped 10%, or $56 billion, to $630 billion, a record high for the month. The month of July this year had fewer business days than last year, so the Treasury said that adjusting for the difference would have increased receipts by about $20 billion, resulting in a deficit of about $271 billion. Gross customs receipts in July grew to about $28 billion from about $8 billion a year earlier due to higher tariff rates imposed by Trump, a Treasury official said. This data builds on tariff-related momentum in the past couple of months, as companies importing goods paid those duties. For the first 10 months of the fiscal year, the Treasury reported a $1.629 trillion deficit, up 7%, or $112 billion, from the same period a year earlier. Receipts were up 6%, or $262 billion, to $4.347 trillion, a record high for the 10-month period, while outlays grew 7%, or $374 billion, to $5.975 trillion, also a 10-month record.
