Maharashtra Day 2025: History, Significance, and Celebrations

Hans India01-05-2025

Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Diwas, is observed every year on May 1 to mark the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. This day is significant in the history of modern India as it symbolizes the triumph of the Marathi-speaking population's demand for a separate state.
Historical Background
Following India's independence in 1947, the nation underwent reorganisation to align states based on linguistic demographics through the States Reorganisation Act of 1956. However, the then Bombay State included speakers of multiple languages, including Marathi, Gujarati, Konkani, and Kutchi. This led to the rise of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, a strong regional campaign advocating for a separate Marathi-speaking state.
In response to widespread protests and public support for this demand, the Indian Parliament enacted the Bombay Reorganisation Act in April 1960. This law came into effect on May 1, 1960, resulting in the bifurcation of the Bombay State into two states—Maharashtra and Gujarat—based on linguistic lines.
Significance of Maharashtra Day
Maharashtra Day not only marks the administrative creation of the state but also serves as a tribute to the cultural, linguistic, and social identity of the Marathi people. The day honors the sacrifices of individuals involved in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and celebrates the state's unity and pride.
Maharashtra has since emerged as a key contributor to India's economy, culture, and social progress. With Mumbai as its capital—India's financial center—the state houses several heritage landmarks like the Ajanta and Ellora Caves and has been pivotal in India's industrial and cultural development.
Celebrations and Observances
May 1 is a regional public holiday in Maharashtra and coincides with International Labour Day. Celebrations are held throughout the state, with major events taking place at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, where the Governor of Maharashtra usually presides over the official ceremony.
People participate in parades, cultural programs, and musical rallies, often dressed in traditional attire. Schools, banks, government offices, and most businesses remain closed. All major financial markets, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), National Stock Exchange (NSE), and currency markets, also observe a holiday.

Shiv Sena (UBT) open to alliance with MNS for Maharashtra's benefit, says Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) stated that his party was willing to take 'a step forward or backward' for the welfare of Maharashtra and the Marathi-speaking populace, dismissing any political ego in the matter. His remarks come amid growing speculation of a possible reconciliation between the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Mr. Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP, emphasised that the party's priority was safeguarding the interests of Maharashtra and reasserting its claim over Mumbai. 'We are ready to take a step ahead or back. There is no political ego in it,' he told reporters. The possibility of a thaw between the estranged Thackeray cousins – Uddhav and Raj – has gained traction after recent statements from both leaders hinted at overlooking past differences for a larger cause. While Mr. Raj Thackeray remarked that uniting for the 'Marathi manoos' would not be difficult, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray expressed willingness to move beyond 'trivial issues', provided those working against Maharashtra's interests were sidelined. Echoing the sentiment, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday (June 9, 2025) said his party was open to aligning with any group committed to working for Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Marathi-speaking people with a 'clean heart and mind'. However, he clarified that no formal discussions had taken place yet. 'Talks are only in the media so far. Someone gave a call (for alliance), and we responded. People will see the next steps when they happen,' Mr. Aaditya Thackeray, a former State Minister, told reporters. The potential alliance, if materialised, could mark a significant political shift nearly two decades after the bitter split between the two factions. Mr. Uddhav Thackeray has maintained that the final decision would reflect the people's will, stating, 'Whatever people want, will happen.'

No ego, ready to take step ahead or back: Raut on Sena (UBT), MNS tie-up

The Shiv Sena (UBT) is ready to take a step forward or even backward and there is no political ego in it, party MP Sanjay Raut said on Tuesday amid the chatter of rapprochement between his outfit and the MNS. The Sena (UBT), led by former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, will do whatever possible for the benefit of Maharashtra, "Marathi manoos" (Marathi-speaking people) and to re-ensure their claim on Mumbai, Raut told reporters. "We are ready to take a step ahead or back. There is no political ego in it," the Rajya Sabha member said. Estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation with their recent statements indicating they could ignore "trivial issues" and join hands nearly two decades after a bitter parting of ways. While Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) head Raj Thackeray has said uniting in the interest of "Marathi manoos" is not difficult, Uddhav has insisted he is ready to put aside trivial fights, provided those working against Maharashtra's interests are not entertained. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday said his party was ready to align with any outfit which wants to work for Mumbai, Maharashtra and Marathi-speaking people with a "clean heart and mind". Asked about the buzz surrounding a potential tie-up between the Sena (UBT) and the MNS, Aaditya Thackeray indicated nothing was on the table as of now and things have not moved beyond media circles. "Discussions are only in the media. As of now, someone has given a call (for alliance) and we have responded. People will see when the next steps are taken," the former state minister told reporters. "We are ready to join hands with those who are ready to fight for Marathi-speaking people, Mumbai and Maharashtra with a clean heart and mind. Uddhavji has already said whatever people want will happen," the opposition MLA said.
