Shiv Sena (UBT) open to alliance with MNS for Maharashtra's benefit, says Sanjay Raut

The Hindu2 days ago

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) stated that his party was willing to take 'a step forward or backward' for the welfare of Maharashtra and the Marathi-speaking populace, dismissing any political ego in the matter.
His remarks come amid growing speculation of a possible reconciliation between the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
Mr. Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP, emphasised that the party's priority was safeguarding the interests of Maharashtra and reasserting its claim over Mumbai. 'We are ready to take a step ahead or back. There is no political ego in it,' he told reporters.
The possibility of a thaw between the estranged Thackeray cousins – Uddhav and Raj – has gained traction after recent statements from both leaders hinted at overlooking past differences for a larger cause. While Mr. Raj Thackeray remarked that uniting for the 'Marathi manoos' would not be difficult, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray expressed willingness to move beyond 'trivial issues', provided those working against Maharashtra's interests were sidelined.
Echoing the sentiment, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday (June 9, 2025) said his party was open to aligning with any group committed to working for Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Marathi-speaking people with a 'clean heart and mind'. However, he clarified that no formal discussions had taken place yet.
'Talks are only in the media so far. Someone gave a call (for alliance), and we responded. People will see the next steps when they happen,' Mr. Aaditya Thackeray, a former State Minister, told reporters.
The potential alliance, if materialised, could mark a significant political shift nearly two decades after the bitter split between the two factions. Mr. Uddhav Thackeray has maintained that the final decision would reflect the people's will, stating, 'Whatever people want, will happen.'

Amid talk of reunion of Thackeray cousins, Fadnavis meets with Raj Thackeray

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had a hush-hush meeting with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray at a Mumbai hotel on Thursday amid the talk of the latter's reconciliation with his estranged cousin Uddhav Thackeray, people aware of the matter said. The people said the meeting was not mentioned in Fadnavis's schedule. They added that Thackeray arrived at the hotel around 9.40am, and Fadnavis 40 minutes later. The meeting lasted about an hour, sparking speculation that Fadnavis was trying to prevent Uddhav and Raj Thackeray's reconciliation, as it is expected to consolidate the Marathi vote bank ahead of the Mumbai civic polls. Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray are believed to have explored the possibility of including the MNS in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition and a seat adjustment. Neither Fadnavis nor Raj Thackeray commented on the meeting. MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande said he did not know why they met and what they discussed. 'I cannot comment.' Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar said that Raj Thackeray has said they could come together for the benefit of Maharashtra. He added that Uddhav Thackeray gave a positive response. 'A poll of Marathis shows 86% want two cousins to come together. There is a positive atmosphere between Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS...' Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat said it was wrong to draw conclusions about the meeting. He added they are also interested in an alliance with the MNS. In April, Raj Thackeray spoke about uniting with his cousin in the interest of Marathis. In a podcast, he said that he had no issues working with Uddhav Thackeray in the undivided Shiv Sena. He said that for a bigger cause, their fights and issues are trivial. At a separate event, Uddhav Thackeray said he was ready to put aside 'trivial' fights provided that those working against Maharashtra's interests were not entertained. He appealed to everyone to come together for the sake of the Marathi people. Uddhav Thackeray said his cousin should not host anti-Maharashtra people and parties anymore. The comment came after Shinde, who engineered the 2022 split in the Shiv Sena to join the BJP-led alliance, visited Raj Thackeray's residence. Uddhav Thackeray said Raj Thackeray cannot support the BJP during the Lok Sabha polls and oppose it during the assembly elections, and compromise. The MNS has switched sides multiple times. Raj Thackeray quit the undivided Shiv Sena in January 2006, blaming Uddhav Thackeray for promoting him to do that. He formed the MNS, which won 13 seats in the 2009 assembly elections. The MNS's performance has since been dismal. It failed to win any seats in the 2024 assembly polls. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena is a key partner of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi. MNS has backed the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Nana Patole's ‘video games' remark on Operation Sindoor sparks row as BJP, Sena hit back at Congress

Congress leader Nana Patole on Thursday made a controversial remark about India's Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. He alleged that the operation was halted due to "trade reasons" and likened it to "kids playing video games in a computer room." Speaking to the media, Nana Patole said, 'The sindoor of 26 women in Pahalgam was wiped away, and the terrorists responsible have still not been found. Operation Sindoor was halted for trade interests. Trump said a dozen times that trade would stop with both countries, that's why Operation Sindoor was stopped. It was done at their Sindoor was just like kids playing video games in a computer room - it was nothing more than that.' His statement triggered strong reactions from BJP and Shiv Sena leaders, who accused Patole of 'insulting' India's military action and labelled him an 'insensitive person.' Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule criticised Congress leader Nana Patole's remarks on Operation Sindoor, taking to X to post, 'Congress leader Nana Patole has once again proved that Congress is hand in glove with Pakistan by making an objectionable statement that 'Operation Sindoor is a computer game'." He further said, 'Insulting this operation, which created fear in the hearts of India's enemies, is not just an insult to our brave soldiers and their valour, but to the entire India. Does this insensitive person have any idea of how much pain the families of our martyrs will suffer due to this ridiculous statement of Nana Patole?" Bawankule added, 'Nana, Operation Sindoor is not a computer game, but it is a brave and courageous action against the terrorist bases of Pakistan. It is a burning tale of valor that will instill fear in the hearts of traitors!' Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC also slammed Patole, saying, 'Nana Patole has been the child of controversy for the longest time. He makes statements without thinking. Operation Sindoor was not a video game as he suggests. Maybe if he has such low mindset, then he should first engage with his own party leaders like Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, Salman Khurshid to understand the impact of Operation Sindoor.' NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Rohit Pawar also weighed in, remarking, 'What Trump said that he will increase the taxes on the products if we don't stop (military action); then that was very disrespectful to our country's citizens. It felt like our country bowed down. Our PM should have responded to that, but no such response from his side for Trump… What a leader is saying on Operation Sindoor, the BJP is politicising that. However, I feel that we should not speak against India.' On May 7, India carried out precision airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. In retaliation, Pakistan launched attempted strikes on Indian military installations on May 8, 9, and 10. India issued a strong and immediate counter-response to these attacks. Tensions de-escalated on May 10 after a conversation between the directors general of military operations (DGMOs) from both countries, resulting in a mutual agreement to cease military action. After Operation Sindoor, the Indian government announced the formation of seven all-party delegations, involving leaders from both the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc.

Maharashtra: Amid MNS-Sena (UBT) alliance buzz, CM Fadnavis meets Raj Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and MNS head Raj Thackeray met at a hotel in Mumbai on Thursday morning. The meeting comes amid speculation over rapprochement between Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his politically estranged cousin Raj Thackeray, who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Senior BJP leader Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray met at a five-star hotel in Bandra area here in the morning, sources confirmed but declined to elaborate. When contacted, BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said the two leaders are good friends and may have met to discuss development issues related to the state. The Maharashtra government this week set in motion the process of holding the local body polls by issuing orders for ward delimitation for 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai. There has been speculation about a possible reconciliation between the Thackeray brothers ahead of the polls. The estranged Thackeray cousins sparked the buzz with their recent statements indicating they could ignore "trivial issues" and join hands nearly two decades after a bitter parting of ways. While Raj Thackeray has said uniting in the interest of "Marathi manoos" (Marathi-speaking people) is not difficult, Uddhav has insisted he is ready to put aside trivial fights, provided those working against Maharashtra's interests are not entertained. Raj Thackeray extended support to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but his party contested the state assembly polls in November last year on its own.
