True Detective season 5 setting revealed as HBO nears production

Independent13-02-2025

The return of True Detective is hotting up, with a setting for new episodes announced by HBO.
News of True Detective season five follows hot on the heels of a successful fourth run, set in Alaska. Starring Jodie Foster, that series was titled True Detective: Night Country.
Night Country 's showrunner Issa López is returning for the new instalment, which HBO has confirmed will be switching states.
'It's set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,' Francesca Orsi, HBO's Head of Drama Series and Film, said at the premiere for season three of The White Lotus.
'Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country,' Orsi told Deadline, adding: 'It's a different milieu but just as powerful.'
Production is set to begin in the next few months with casting expected to be announced imminently. The season will premiere in 2027.
According to reports, the show will have three leads and hold connections to Night Country – much like that season had controversial connections with season one.
Orsi continued: 'I'm really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she's excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season.
'Honestly, I can't wait for this to go. It's all about casting and getting this ready.'
Lopez previously told the New York Post about the forthcoming season: 'There's going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season]. That said, it's a new story, new characters, everything.'
In a development that proved divisive to a contingent of long-time fans of the HBO anthology series, season four was revealed to have direct links to characters and symbols featured in the acclaimed debut run, which aired in 2014.
Set in Ennis, Alaska, the series, which was review-bombed by 'bros' upon its release, follows detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, as they investigate the sudden disappearance of eight men from a research station. Two episodes in, a spiral symbol heavily featured in season one appeared.
Elsewhere, eagle-eyed viewers highlighted how one character in Night Country was actually the father of Matthew McConaughey's character Rustin 'Rust' Cohle appeared.
The Independent asked López about the reasoning behind these references during a preview screening of the finale.
According to López, it was a convenient way to convey that the shows share a universe, and nothing more. The Mexican writer-director was already working on a murder mystery set in Alaska when HBO called and asked her 'what she'd do' with True Detective.
After deciding to transpose a new series of True Detective onto her existing idea, the writer-director 'set out to create it in the very same universe'.
López told The Independent: 'It's very important to me to say the world where Dora Lange died in 2007 in Louisiana is the exact same world where the scientists disappear in 2024. So how do you establish those realities? Just to say, 'This is the same world.'
The showrunner said it was nothing more than a coincidence that Rust's father had died in the place where her series was set and thought it would be another convenient way of linking the worlds. She also suggested the use of the symbol was not designed to be a hint that the cases featured in each season were in any way linked.
'While you're creating your situation in Alaska, and the father of [Rust] died in Alaska, you mention it,' she continued, adding: 'Then it turns out I need a symbol that signifies to these characters that they're in the proximity of the beyond – well, there's a symbol that did that in the first season. I'm not going to put a triangle in this one.'
López said: 'It's organic – and there's members of the audience who are going to adore it because it connects it and it's recognisable and you're that meme with Leonardo DiCpario, right?'

The Wire actor Tray Chaney shares update after son is carried away by tornado

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The Wire actor Tray Chaney has shared an emotional update on his 19-year-old son Malachi, who was critically injured after being thrown nearly 300 feet by a tornado that destroyed their home in Georgia last week. The tornado, which hit Locust Grove near Atlanta on May 29, left a trail of devastation. Chaney – best known for playing Poot on the HBO drama – was asleep when the EF-2 storm tore through his neighborhood. He described hearing a sound 'like a train was coming' before his entire room was ripped apart. 'I just remember turning to my right and my walls, and my TVs and my dressers and my bed turned upside down and I levitated in the air,' Chaney said in a new interview with TMZ. 'I just remember covering [my face with my arms], yelling my son's name out.' Chaney was knocked unconscious as the house collapsed around him. When he awoke, he was buried in debris and lying in the mud, unsure where his son had been carried. Neighbours helped pull him from the wreckage, but Malachi was nowhere to be seen. Eventually, Malachi was discovered in nearby woods, having been hurled by the tornado's vortex. Despite being flung the length of a football field, he survived. But the injuries were severe: every bone in his face fractured, broken ribs, and cuts covering his upper body. Remarkably, his legs were largely unharmed. After six days in intensive care, Chaney confirmed Malachi is now in stable condition and has been moved to a less critical unit. 'But it's going to be a long journey and a long road to recovery. We're not out of the hospital,' he said. The tornado struck just days before Malachi's birthday on June 1. Though the celebration was subdued, Chaney managed to surprise his son with a special video message from NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal, who wished him a happy birthday. 'The tough part is watching him be stable and respond the best way he can,' Chaney said. 'And every single day, he doesn't know what happened.' More Trending Chaney's wife, Ayesha, had not been home during the storm but returned soon after. The family has since been staying with friends and in temporary housing. 'We went to war with a tornado and came out on top,' Chaney said. 'Everybody in that house could have been killed.' He continued: 'I don't know what's … coming, and I'm not trying to figure it out.' The family has launched a GoFundMe to help rebuild. At time of writing, the fund has raised $99,370 (£77,500). Got a story? White Lotus star breaks down in tears as he finally addresses feud with co-star

Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood - who played Rick Hackett and his Chelsea in The White Lotus - have broken their silence months after their reported feud Their on-screen chemistry and complicated love story left White Lotus viewers enthralled - but that didn't help stop rumours of a backstage feud between actors Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood after one particularly awkward social media interaction. But the pair, who played mysterious Rick Hackett and his girlfriend Chelsea, have finally spoken out - revealing why they've only seen each other once since season three's February premiere. ‌ And Walton, unable to hold back his emotions, declared "I love this woman madly" about Aimee in a bid to set the record straight. ‌ Two months since the show's dramatic finale, the pair have reunited for Variety magazine as they got up close and personal once again. Speaking of the moment they met for the very first time, Aimee revealed he had texted her to come over for lunch. She said: "I didn't know what to order. I was like, 'Can you pick for me?' I was so nervous." Walton added: "The minute she walked around the corner, I felt, 'This is gonna work. Two minutes into the conversation, it felt like I've known this person for 100 years." Despite suggestions of a feud, Walton was also very keen to reiterate that Aimee is "so important" to him as he began to choke up. He told the magazine: "There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me." Turning to Aimee, he continued: "This is Goldie Hawn. This is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be. I'll be on an island, I think Greece. But she's special. There is no feud. She is love and I know that I am that to her. We care about each other very deeply." Aimee also responded to the feud rumours and Walton unfollowing her on Instagram, which she doesn't appear fussed about at all. ‌ "I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a s***e about Instagram," she said. While she had initially wanted to respond to the feud claims over the following, Aimee said that she decided to just "sit back and watch these people making something out of absolutely nothing". ‌ Explaining further about the unfollowing, Walton - whose first wife tragically died by suicide in 2004 - suggested that he simply wasn't good with goodbyes and unfollowed anyone who was part of the show after filming wrapped up. In tears, he said: "I knew what we had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea." ‌ Walton went on to say that he had just needed to take a step back from everyone after filming ended and he hasn't spoken to anyone as he "couldn't handle it". He added: "Judge me or don't. I don't give a f*** what you think. This is my process. Rick means everything to me, and Chelsea means everything to me." As the interview wrapped up, Walton declared that he would follow Aimee on Instagram again, declaring it all "ridiculous" and that he would be friends with her "for f***ing ever". Crying again as he hugged his former co-star, Walton added: "I'm emotional because we haven't been in the same city to ever talk about this. So for me, this is just so wonderful."
