Lots to play for at inter-state meet
While five athletes have already surpassed the automatic qualifying mark in their respective disciplines, several others are in contention to qualify via the world-ranking route.
While Avinash Sable has been ruled out due to an injury, the others who have breached the Worlds marks are Neeraj Chopra (men's javelin), Parul Chaudhary (women's 3000m steeplechase), Praveen Chithravel (men's triple jump) and Gulveer Singh (men's 5000m).
Focus on javelin
Since Neeraj has received a wildcard entry to the Worlds as the reigning champion, India can field three more javelin throwers at the global event. The inter-state meet presents an opportunity for Sachin Yadav, Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav to make the cut. Sachin is sitting comfortably at the 22nd position in the 'Road to Tokyo' standings, while Yashvir is 30th. A good performance here will all but see Yashvir seal his berth, with Rohit having an uphill task as he is placed well below the threshold.

On the women's side, Annu Rani is slowly getting into her groove after recording multiple 60m+ throws.
Racewalker Servin gives the competition a miss
Asian Championships bronze medallist Servin Sebastian (20km), who is well within the qualification standard for the Worlds, will not compete as the competition does not offer world-ranking points for the race walking events.
'As there is hardly a month for the World Championships, we wanted Servin to rest and train.
Had he competed in the inter-state event, he would have needed three weeks for recovery. So, we wanted him to be fresh for Tokyo,' Servin's coach Ganapathi told TOI.
Another chance for Animesh to impress
Youngster Animesh Kujur has raised the ceiling of Indian sprinting. Animesh, the owner of national records in both 100m and 200m, is likely to qualify for the Worlds in 200m as he is ranked 42nd in the 'Road to Tokyo'. A good performance here could seal the deal for the 22-year-old.
Meanwhile, as the relay teams (men's and women's 400m) will not qualify for the Worlds, the inter-state meet will merely be a 'practice run' for the quarter-milers. 'We were expecting the relay teams to qualify, but it is unfortunate to see them not do it. We initially thought that we might have a chance to qualify via the inter-state but that does not look possible,' India head coach Radhakrishnan Nair said.
This is an important competition for Sreeshankar Murali (men's long jump), who can qualify directly by entry standard. After an injury break, Sreeshankar has breached the 8m mark on multiple occasions and it remains to be seen if he can qualify directly via the qualification standard (8.27m).
The other athletes who are in contention include Sarvesh Kushare (men's high jump) and Ankita Dhyani (women's steeplechase).

The pair faced British No. 1 Jack Draper and American Jessica Pegula in the opening round of the revamped $1 million mixed doubles event. Fans quickly dubbed the duo 'Raducaraz,' and their pairing sparked relationship rumors after Raducanu was spotted supporting Alcaraz at Queen's in June. Both players expressed excitement about playing together on the court. Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz's mixed doubles debut ends in straight sets Despite showing occasional glimpses of chemistry and fun teamwork, Raducanu and Alcaraz lost the match 4-2, 4-2 in just 50 minutes. The British No.1 and Spanish superstar laughed, chatted and celebrated small wins at certain points to keep their spirits up despite losing the first set. Then Alcaraz produced a stunning around-the-net shot in the second set. Both Raducanu and Alcaraz regularly discussed tactics during their changeovers; however, Draper and Pegula, who were the tournament's number one seeds, were always in control and went on to win. Both players arrived in New York late on Monday evening, having flown in late from Cincinnati, where Alcaraz had just won the singles. Alcaraz said, 'The scheduling isn't the best, playing tomorrow… but the concept of the tournament I love it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Things Women Should NEVER Wear! Bangladesh, Kazakhstan to be part of Asia Cup in place of Pakistan & Oman
With just 10 days to go for the first match, Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) finally announced the schedule for the men's Asia Cup hockey tournament. Pakistan, however, will not be part of it, having been replaced by Bangladesh in the eight-team tournament that will be held from Aug 29 to Sept 7 at Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar. Oman also pulled out of the tournament at the last moment, with Kazakhstan taking their place. The remaining five teams taking part in the event besides hosts India are Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and South Korea. While India have been clubbed with Japan, China and Kazakhstan in Pool A, Pool B consists of Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh and Chinese Taipei. After the pool stage, where the teams will play each other once, the top two teams from each pool will play in the Super4s. Once again it will be played in a round-robin format with the top two teams making it to the final. The winner will be awarded a spot in the FIH World Cup to be held next year in the Netherlands and Belgium. As far as the fixtures are concerned, Malaysia will play the tournament opener against Bangladesh, while India will hope to make a winning start when they take on China. Being the No. 1 side in Asia, Craig Fulton's men will undoubtedly come into the tournament as strong favourites. But hockey fans will certainly feel the absence of Pakistan. Their participation was always doubtful following the Pahalgam incident. However, the Indian govt had said it would provide visas to the players and even Hockey India was confident of their participation. But Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) refused to travel citing security concerns. AHF president Fumio Ogura, meanwhile, said in a statement, "The Asia Cup will bring together the very best of Asian hockey. With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition, inspire millions of fans, and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Asia." Korea continue to be the most successful side in the tournament, having won the title five times in the past. As for India, they finished third in the last edition in Jakarta but it does seem they will finish on top this time around. Riku, Kuldeep set for Asia Cup action
1 2 3 4 5 6 Lucknow: Two UP players, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and batter Rinku Singh , have secured berths in the Indian squad for Asia Cup , to be played in UAE from Sep 8. The team was announced in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. Kuldeep, who was also a part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series in England, could not make it to the playing XI in any of the five Test matches. After the Indian Premier League in May, he was not seen in action in any official matches and now will head directly to Dubai for the Asia Cup, which will be played in T20 format. Rinku Singh has seen some action in the ongoing UPT20 League. He led the Meerut Mavericks in the inaugural match and bowled a couple of overs, taking one wicket. Talking to TOI, Kuldeep's coach Kapil Pandey said, "After the England tour he is in his home town (Kanpur) and doing a lot of net practice and playing friendly matches. He is fit and fine for the Asia Cup." "He is always a dominant force on Asian pitches and should do well again, like in the 2018 Asia Cup when he had the most wickets during the tournament. He is in form and India's number one spin bowler when playing in Asia," he said. Speaking about the squad, former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim said, "Inclusion of Shubman Gill is a good move. He has earned place in the T20 team on the sheer strength of his performance in the Test series in England. Being made the vice-captain, the team management and national selectors see him as an all format player-cum- captain." Asked about the middle order batter Rinku Singh, he said, "I'm glad he is being given another chance. The Indian team still believes in his value to the team. He bats well, has started bowling off-spin, and is an excellent fielder. You can place him anywhere in the outfield, and he has safe hands." "He has the quality to deliver a good performance," Karim told TOI on the sidelines of the UPT20 League where he is a commentator. On Kuldeep, he said, "In the Asia Cup, he will be the main bowler with Axar Patel. His wrist spinning quality was effective in every aspect. I hope he will perform well again and his contribution is so important for team India." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
