Kerry cricketers win through to All-Ireland National Cup semi-final

The match between Kerry and the visitors from Glendermott from Derry city was a fitting drama for a National Cup quarter-final. Varun Ghorpade (25) and Alam Morshed (61) combined in a superb opening partnership of 97 for Kerry. But then in the space of 8 balls, the momentum completely switched as bowlers Ross and Mills sent four batters back to the pavilion while Kerry added just a single run; Kerry and their supporters, suddenly subdued.
Qassim (16) and Khurram (21) set about rebuilding and the Kerry tail started to wag. Yaqoob Ali compiled an impressive 41 including four huge 6s. It was more gritty than pretty, but Kerry's determination was rewarded by posting a challenging total of 235. Ben Mills was the standout bowler for Glendermott: 8-0-38-5.
As Glendermott's opening batters set about the chase, Kerry captain, Braden Warnke opened his bowling account with two consecutive maiden overs and made the first breakthrough in his fourth. He clean bowled Ben Mills (29) who'd played some classy shots (five 4s and a six), and looked as though he might win the match single-handed.
Each time a new batter came to the crease for the visitors, they established a promising partnership, nevertheless, Kerry kept finding a way to break the batter's momentum. When Yaqoob removed Ryan Nolan who made a dogged 22, the score was 179 for 8 and at that point the Derry men's resistance collapsed; batters 10 and 11 failed to add to that score. So, with six overs to spare Kerry secured a place in the All-Ireland National Cup semi-finals.

Kerry's second XI were unable to turn the tide on their poor season on Saturday. Cork County dominated proceedings at The Marydyke. Choosing to bat first, the home squad posted 336 for 4 off their 45 overs. Rob Duggan again showed his quality just missing out on a century dismissed for 99 off as many balls, while Ritesh Sah top-scored with a scintillating, 128n.o., smashing four 4s and two 6s. Kerry in reply were bowled out for 187 in 31 overs, Qassim Mohammed top scored with a defiant 70, but a margin of 149 runs makes it another heavy loss for Kerry 2nd XI.

In a free scoring match at Midleton in Sunday, Kerry's third squad posted an impressive 264 off their 40 overs, Zadran's 82 (seven 4s and four 6s) came off only 48 balls and Adil Rahil(46) was unlucky to miss out on a half century. But openers Muhammed (80) and Dhiver (30) responded with a top class century partnership, posting 119 in 17 overs to provide Midleton with the best possible platform, Adeel Ahmed also hit 57 off 44 balls, and though Kerry bowlers made them work hard, Midleton completed their chase with 4 balls to spare in the final over.
County Kerry CC 3rd XI: 264 for 9, lost to Midleton CC 2nd XI: 265 for 7 by 3 wickets.

Bowling: Young hotshots the highlight of five Munster finals

Munster bowling fans will have an incredibly busy weekend if they are to take in all five Munster finals from Friday to Sunday afternoon. Cathal Creedon against Eoin O'Donovan in Saturday's Junior C final at Derrinasafa is the prime attraction. These are two really impressive young players. Creedon contested the Munster u18 final earlier in the Summer and was part of the all-conquering Irish youth team at last year's European championships. O'Donovan is a few years ahead of him and is also a burgeoning talent. He won the Munster Novice B in October 2020, but, because of covid-19, had to wait almost a year to contest the All-Ireland series in September 2021 in Aughagower. Both come into the final with a nice mix of form and a few hiccups to keep them grounded. Creedon secured his place through a last shot win over Conor Lucey at Ballinacurra. He opened as if he would totally dominate the contest. He got a huge first shot and was almost at the church in two more, raising a bowl of odds. Lucey played a fine fifth shot to Foley's which brought the lead under a bowl. He was pushed back on his heels though, when Creedon got a big shot to the gas line to take his lead well over a bowl. Creedon kept the lead at or close to a bowl in the shots past Perrott's. Lucey gained traction with a good bowl to the GAA field and a brilliant bowl towards the bridge won him the lead. Creedon only beat Innishannon cross with his next one. Lucey hit back with another big bowl to the silver gate and he now was almost a bowl in front. Creedon pulled that back to just five metres with a great bowl onto the straight. He followed up with a huge bowl past the finish line. Lucey was left with his reply and missed the tip. O'Donovan needed a late rally too to see off Michael Ahern in the other semi-final at Curraheen. They were level after five each to light at Ryan's. Ahern went over the bridge in two more to go almost a bowl in front. He held that with his next two to the riding school. O'Donovan closed the gap dramatically with a great bowl from there. He followed with another big one to Richard's lane which won him the lead. Ahern nosed back in front with a fine bowl past Lane's. O'Donovan had the last word with a super last shot through the cross and past the line. Kevin Ó Crualaoí and Padraig Scanlon have a chance to test each other over the same Curraheen course, when they face off in Sunday morning's Munster Novice A final. In the semi-finals Ó Crualaoí got the better of David O'Brien at Shannonvale and Scanlon dismissed Tom Cronin in Béal na Marbh. O'Brien led well after four to McSweeney's. Ó Crualaoí closed the gap with a good fifth. But the defining bowl of the score, was his scintillating shot to Buttimer's pillars. O'Brien missed that well and then missed Desmond's cross. Ó Crualaoí went out to go a bowl in front. He scorched to Campbell's lane in just five more to keep his lead at a bowl, which was more than enough to see him home. Scanlon was engaged in a very tight contest with Cronin in the early exchanges at Ballyclough. He won the first significant lead with a big fifth shot up the hill. He was a bowl in front after two more to the end of the railing. He then comprehensively beat a big bowl from Cronin onto the straight. He raised almost two bowls of odds with his next one. David Minihane and Michael A. Cronin will contest the Novice B final at Grange on Saturday. Minihane's opponent, Alan Murphy, pulled up injured in their semi-final at Clondrohid. Cronin gave a five-star display in the second half of his semi-final win over T.J. Holman at Templemartin. The first final of the weekend is between Liam Kearney and Billy Healy in the Novice C decider at Newcestown on Friday. Kearney led all the way against Barry Coughlan at Inch. Healy held off a late rally from Eoin Hurley at Baile Bhuirne in his semi-final. Pa Daly and Cathal O'Sullivan contest the Novice D final at Ballinacurra on Saturday. Daly pulled off an unlikely win against Mark Bourke, thanks to a big second last shot at Ballyclough. O'Sullivan beat Mikey O'Callaghan by a bowl in the other semi-final at the Clubhouse. Maria Nagle beat Ciara Buckley in the last shot of the Gretta Cormican Cup at Newcestown. In the Tim Foley Cup at Templemartin, Cillian Kelleher beat David Hegarty in the last shot, with Kenneth Murphy two bowls behind.

Brendan Maher issues stark warning as Tipperary face daunting Munster task in 2026

The All-Ireland winning captain says Tipp must scrap for every win with no guarantees beyond the provincial stage Former All-Ireland winning Tipperary captain Brendan Maher says there are no guarantees they'll advance beyond the Munster SHC in 2026. Maher captained Tipp to success in 2016, and was on the team that won again in 2019, but the county suffered a big dip afterwards, failing to make it back to Croke Park until this summer. 2 Former Tipperary hurler Brendan Maher issued a warning to All-Ireland champions 2 Former All-Ireland winner Maher pointed towards the depth in the Munster Championship Advertisement Three-time All-Star Maher said Croke Park has always been a special place for Tipp teams, including his own, who felt they 'had a new lease of life' at the venue - but getting there has been the hard part. Speaking after participating in Monday evening's Hurler for Cancer Research charity game in Carlow alongside current Tipp stars Darragh McCarthy and Noel McGrath, Maher said 2026 will see Tipp start at the foot of the ladder again. Maher said: "It's hard to see anything beyond trying to get a couple of wins in Munster and trying to get out of Munster. "You saw what happened to Clare this year - it's going to be just as difficult for Tipp next year. Advertisement "You have a tough task playing Cork in the first round with the way the fixtures are. "So I think the goal is just to get out of Munster whatever way you can and then hopefully have a crack at the All-Ireland again. "But there are no guarantees. That's the beauty of the Munster championship. "The All-Ireland win was this year, yes, but next year is going to be a case of starting all over again. Nothing is deserved or guaranteed and you have some great teams all around Munster." Advertisement Tipp took care of Kilkenny and Cork when they finally returned to Croke Park in this season's Championship. Maher, who called it quits in 2021, said: "It probably was something that we would have referenced, that we felt that once we got up to Croke Park that we had a new lease of life and that it did give us a bit of fresh energy. Henry Shefflin among GAA stars at Oasis gigs where Man City tradition made its Croke Park debut "You were getting up to the big stage and you felt like you were getting towards the business end of the Championship. "Yeah, I think the experienced lads especially this year would have felt that, 'Once we get back up there, we'll be comfortable'. And I think the younger lads would have fed off that. "Obviously it was six years waiting, that's a long time, but I do think that experience that the boys would have had helped a lot of the newer, younger lads." Advertisement Borris-Ileigh man Maher described McCarthy, who fired 1-13 in the All-Ireland decider, just his seventh Championship appearance, as a 'special talent' for Tipp. He said: "He's a great young lad and his attitude is what makes him so special. Hopefully he has a long period ahead of him in the blue and gold." TIPP SELECTION Maher confirmed that he will continue as a selector with Offaly for the 2026 season. He said: "I'll still be involved, that'll be my fourth year with them. "They're a great bunch of players, some of them were playing in the Hurling for Cancer Research game as well. Advertisement "You would have seen Adam Screeney, Brian Duignan, Dan Bourke was on the line, he didn't come on because he's nursing a bit of an injury, and Liam Hoare went into goals. "They're a great bunch and we've had a fair journey with them, trying to get up that ladder. We're in Division 1 of the League and the MacCarthy Cup again next year so hopefully they'll improve again." As for Monday's charity game, which ended in a win for Jim Bolger's selection, against Davy Russell's team, Maher said it was a pleasure to take part. He said of the fight against cancer: "Everyone has family members that have been touched by it. I've lost a few unfortunately over the years. "I hope the donations and support online was as generous as everyone that turned up for the game because it felt fantastic."
