SMASHING SUCCESS: 50 YEARS AND BEYOND

The Star22-04-2025

IN celebration of its 50th anniversary, AmBank Group will host the first AmBank Malaysia Pickleball Championship 2025 – a tournament that brings together community, culture and youth empowerment through sport.
The championship, taking place from May 30 to June 1, is expected to attract around 500 participants, ranging from first-time players to seasoned enthusiasts of all ages.
Hosted at Partner Pickle Nation and organised by SCORE Sports Management, the tournament harnesses the growing global and local appeal of pickleball.
Driven by the slogan, 'Malaysia Kita', the championship strives to go beyond competition to celebrate the nation's unique community values such as our diverse culture and language.
AmBank's is committed to driving meaningful impact among Malaysians, helping them recognise the importance of financial health, as well as their physical and mental health.
'We want to celebrate our 50th anniversary through an event that brings 'Malaysia Kita' together in action through sport and community,' said AmBank Group corporate communications and marketing head Shazman Shahid.
'This championship aims to unite an active community through a sport that's fun and uplifting.
'We hope this platform can champion healthier lifestyles, nurture youth sportsmanship and highlight the spirit of 'Malaysia Kita'.
'We also hope that in the foreseeable future, AmBank will continuously be associated with pickleball, as the official presenter of this sport among Malaysians from all walks of life,' he added.
SCORE Sports Management chief executive officer Patricia Tan added, 'At SCORE, we believe that sport should be accessible, inclusive, and inspiring.
'We're proud to collaborate with AmBank on this milestone event, bringing Malaysians of all ages and backg rounds together to discover pickleball.
'More than just a competition, this championship is a celebration of movement, unity and the power of sport to bring real, positive change to our communities,' she said.
Kids paddle up
On June 1, a dedicated youth coaching session will take centre court, encouraging young Malaysians to get active.
Led by experienced coaches and players, the two-hour session includes drills, exhibition matches and fun, team-based activities for beginners.
It introduces the sport in an approachable and exciting way, fostering confidence, connection and healthy habits in young players.
Youth participants are invited to experience the joy of the sport through such activities.
They will also forge new friendships and become part of a growing local sports culture in Malaysia.
Smash, serve, recycle
In line with AmBank's sustainability commitment, the championship includes initiatives that encourage waste reduction and recycling in sports.
One such activity is a sneaker recycling programme, where used sports shoes are collected and repurposed into materials for community running tracks or court surfaces.
This initiative raises awareness of circular design and environmental responsibility.
By encouraging Malaysians to rethink waste, AmBank uses sport as a platform to drive sustainable, socially responsible values.
Symbol of unity and vision
As AmBank celebrates 50 years of growth, this championship is a symbol of the bank's vision – one uniting communities, empowering youth and inspiring healthier lifestyles.
Ahead of the tournament, the public is invited to join the 'AmBank 50th Pickleball Relay Challenge' – a virtual event where participants symbolically 'pass the pickleball' across the country.
It will be a celebration of unity, teamwork and the rising popularity of this dynamic sport.
Join the relay, share your moment and rally the spirit of Malaysia Kita in the lead-up to the AmBank Malaysia Pickleball Championship 2025.
Registration is now open. Secure your spot today to be part of this tournament and celebration.

Moomoo Malaysia launches campaign to drive retail investor growth and capability

MOOMOO MALAYSIA has launched a strategic investor development campaign supported by Bursa Malaysia in conjunction with Bursa Malaysia's Shares2U programme, aimed at equipping Malaysian retail investors with the tools, incentives, and market structure needed to engage capital markets with greater confidence and competence. Running from June 6 to July 7, the co-branded campaign blends incentive-led onboarding with performance-based learning. New and experienced investors alike can access a streamlined, technology-driven trading experience via the Moomoo Malaysia platform, which offers tools, insights, and live data to support smarter investment decisions. The campaign introduces a two-pronged opportunity for Malaysians to build investing confidence through: > Rewards worth up to RM 2,200 for new Moomoo users, including RM400 worth of Bursa-listed stocks > A national Malaysia stock trading challenge that is open to all users, with a total prize pool of up to RM14,000, designed to sharpen real-market trading skills. Central to the campaign is Moomoo's emphasis on capability-building. The platform delivers real-time market data, advanced screeners, and analytics tools typically used by professional investors tailored for Malaysian users. By aligning incentives with trading education and decision-making, the campaign supports more informed, self-directed participation in Malaysia's capital markets. Moomoo Malaysia chief executive officer Ivan Mok said 'The long-term health of Malaysia's capital markets will be shaped not by short-term retail surges, but by sustained, self-directed investor capability. 'This campaign supports that trajectory — not just through access to market, but through informed engagement with the market. 'In partnership with Bursa Malaysia, we're combining institutional trust with our professional-grade, real-time trading tools to help Malaysians become active, smart and informed participants in the stock market.' Elevating investor literacy Unlike traditional campaigns focused solely on incentives, this initiative emphasises market experience and financial literacy. The Moomoo platform provides Malaysian users with institutional-grade tools — including real-time data feeds, advanced screeners, and analytics — in a retail-accessible environment. This technology-first approach is intended to strengthen trading discipline and investor readiness across market cycles. 'With markets entering a more uncertain phase — from renewed trade tensions to sector-level volatility — the gap between simply participating and investing with discipline is becoming more obvious,' Mok observed. 'In this environment, investors need more than access. They need the tools and experience to think strategically, manage risk, and stay engaged. 'That's the focus of this campaign — to help investors build capability in real time, with the tools and experience to think strategically, manage risk, and stay engaged in the market,' he added. The trading challenge is open to all users, while additional rewards are available exclusively to new users who meet the qualifying deposit criteria. For more information, click here .

SST revision, expansion to have minimal impact on construction, consumer segment

The changes to the SST were drafted with the welfare of the majority of Malaysians in mind, particularly in the case of the consumer segment. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (June 10): The upcoming revision and expansion of Sales and Service Tax's (SST) scope is expected to have limited impact on the construction and consumer segments, according to Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd. However, the exercise is likely to have an adverse impact on the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) sector, as well as financial services and private healthcare, it said in a note today. It said the construction and consumer sectors were likely to be more insulated, noting that the changes to the SST were drafted with the welfare of the majority of Malaysians in mind, particularly in the case of the consumer segment. It also welcomed the fact that the revised SST framework remained mindful of potential cascading effects along the business supply chain. Meanwhile, Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd believes that the expanded SST is a non-event for markets, as it is targeted in nature and deliberately structured to avoid essential goods and services. 'While sectors such as construction, banking, and healthcare may appear exposed, we expect any profit impact to be negligible,' it said in a separate note. It noted that in terms of construction services, most contract structures allow for cost pass-through mechanisms, and new project tenders are likely to be repriced, transferring the incremental cost to the end-customer. For financial services, it does not expect any material impact on banks, as they primarily serve as tax collection agents on behalf of the government. 'Nevertheless, we believe demand for these services will stay fairly inelastic, given limited substitutability,' it added. – Bernama construction consumer Sales and Services Tax
