Former LASD jailer pleads no contest to sex crimes against inmate
The district attorney announced the plea Friday and said that prosecutors will push for a maximum eight-year sentencing for the alleged attack.
'What happened to the victim in this case is unconscionable, and our office will not tolerate such egregious abuses of authority,' Dist. Atty. Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. 'A member of law enforcement who commits sex crimes against an inmate in their custody deserves to be imprisoned. Our prosecutors will vigorously argue for the maximum sentence in state prison.'
The woman who Daniel Everts, now 30, allegedly assaulted filed a federal lawsuit against the Sheriff's Department and Los Angeles County in 2019. The case settled for $950,000 two years later.
In her suit, the woman said she was booked into the Lancaster station jail in June 2019 for driving under the influence, and claimed that Everts assaulted her after she asked for a blanket.
Everts warned her that she 'could do more time in custody and remain in custody if she did not comply' with his demands, the suit alleges, before he entered her jail cell, lowered his pants and forced her to perform oral sex.
The woman was released the next day and Everts was arrested days later before his release on $100,000 bail.
Everts was charged with three felonies for forcible oral copulation, oral copulation under threat of arrest and sexual activity with a detained inmate. He originally pleaded not guilty, but this month entered an open plea of no contest to all counts.
The case was investigated by the Sheriff's Department. Sentencing is scheduled for July 7.

Chargers LB Denzel Perryman arrested on weapons violations
Los Angeles Chargers linebackers Denzel Perryman was arrested on weapons violations on Friday night, according to USA TODAY. Perryman was booked on a felony charge, per the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "NFL player, Denzel Perryman, was arrested by South Los Angeles Station deputies on Friday, August 1, 2025. Deputies conducted a traffic stop of Mr. Perryman's vehicle for vehicle code violations. During their investigation, Mr. Perryman was arrested for multiple weapons violations," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. "Mr. Perryman was extremely cooperative with deputies throughout the investigation." According to TMZ, the 32-year-old Perryman, who is in his 11th NFL season, was on his way to a gun range when he was pulled over by police. Officers searched his car and found two AR-15 rifles and three handguns in his trunk. The rifles were reportedly non-compliant, which is against the law in California. Perryman is expected in court on Tuesday. Perryman was selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft and spent the first six seasons of his career with the Chargers. After signing with the Carolina Panthers in March 2021, he was dealt to the Las Vegas Raiders five months later. Following two years with the Raiders, he signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans. He re-joined the Chargers in March 2024.

Grenade killed 3 Los Angeles sheriff's officials, but second grenade unaccounted for
LOS ANGELES — One of two grenades taken to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department facility detonated last week and killed three detectives, but the second grenade remains unaccounted for, the sheriff said Friday. The sheriff's officials on the Special Enforcement Bureau's Arson Explosives Detail believed the two military-style grenades they seized from a Santa Monica storage unit on July 17 were inert, but one of them detonated the next day and killed the three men, officials said. A federal investigation has determined that the second grenade remains unaccounted for, Sheriff Robert Luna said. Investigators have used X-rays and searched vehicles and lockers at the East Los Angeles facility, as well as the blast site and facility perimeter, since the explosion, he said. 'We have looked at everything out there that we possibly could,' Luna said. He said the investigation into how the explosion happened was ongoing. 'Right now there's a second grenade, that we're not 100% sure where it's at,' Luna said. The explosion occurred around 7:30 a.m. July 18 at the sheriff's department Biscailuz Training Facility. Killed were detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborn, who were all on the Special Enforcement Bureau's Arson Explosives Detail. The day before the explosion, the detail was called to help Santa Monica police after two grenades were found in a tenant storage unit in a building's underground parking garage, Luna said. The explosives detectives 'X-rayed the devices and believed that they were both inert,' Luna said. The devices were taken to the facility to be destroyed and rendered safe, he said. Officials do not believe the second grenade was lost en route from Santa Monica to the training center, Luna said. 'We believe with confidence that did not occur,' he said. Santa Monica is around 20 miles away from East Los Angeles. But if anyone sees what appears to be a grenade, explosive device, or even an unknown object, they are warned not to touch it, and to call 911. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will lead the investigation into the whereabouts of the second device, Luna said. The ATF has also sent its National Response Team to Los Angeles. 'I can tell you with clarity from our post-blast examination that we know one device exploded,' ATF Los Angeles Division Special Agent in Charge Kenny Cooper said. "And we have not recovered any evidence from a second device on that scene." Cooper said investigators, including using explosives-detecting dogs, drones, and cherry pickers to look in trees, have "meticulously examined the radius of over 400 feet from the blast seat, multiple times." "Over the abundance of caution, we searched a blast area far greater than the results of that explosive device," Cooper said. There has been changes in how the sheriff's department handles explosives, including treating all devices, even ones believed to be inert, as live, Luna said. Luna said he has called for a thorough after-action review department policies. "We're going to turn this upside down. We're going to look at everything." Luna said.

Feds charge SoCal medical workers with interfering in ICE raid
Two staff members from an Ontario surgery center have been charged with allegedly interfering with U.S. immigration officers trying to detain landscapers who ran into the center to escape. Jose de Jesus Ortega, a 38-year-old Highland resident, was arrested Friday morning and is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Riverside, according to a U.S. attorney's office Central District of California news release. Officials are still looking for the other suspect, Danielle Nadine Davila, 33, of Corona. Both are charged with assaulting a federal officer and conspiracy to prevent by force and intimidation a federal officer from discharging his duties, authorities said. According to video obtained by KTLA-TV, staffers at the Ontario Advanced Surgical Center earlier this month told two agents to leave because they didn't have a warrant to go onto the property. The agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement were trying to detain 30-year-old Denis Guillen-Solis and two other landscapers who had been working outside and ran into the surgical center when the agents showed up. In the video, Guillen-Solis is shown holding onto the doorway at the surgical center and asking the agents to present identification. The agents then pulled Guillen-Solis from the doorway and detained him. 'The illegal alien arrested inside the surgery center was not a patient. He ran inside for cover and these defendants attempted to block his apprehension by assaulting our agents," said U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli in a statement. According to an affidavit, the two ICE agents wore government-issued equipment, including vests and were using unmarked government-operated vehicles when they conducted their operations. The agents followed a truck with three men inside and approached them after the men exited the truck in the parking lot of the surgery center, according to the release. Two of the men ran away and one of them, an alleged undocumented immigrant from Honduras, was detained near the surgery center's front entrance and tried to pull away, causing the ICE officer to fall to the ground. A medical staffer helped the man off the ground and pulled him away from the officer, according to the news release. The man went into the surgery center and was chased by the ICE agent, who eventually stopped him. The incident occurred amid an extraordinary immigration enforcement effort by the Trump administration in Southern California. Thousands of unauthorized immigrants — many without a criminal record — have been detained at work, in courthouses and on public streets going about their day.
