
This movie legend wants to resurrect a 12 foot tall bird after it went extinct
Imagine the possibility of bringing back a species that was thought to be gone for good. A huge, flightless bird that disappeared from New Zealand about 600 years ago could soon be revived, thanks to a US-based biotech company and a famous filmmaker.
Peter Jackson, the acclaimed director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, owns one of the biggest private collections of moa bones - a bird native to New Zealand that is now extinct. His passion for the large bird, similar to an ostrich, has led to an extraordinary collaboration with Colossal Biosciences, a company known for its bold and sometimes divisive projects to revive extinct species.
On Tuesday, Colossal Biosciences announced its plan to genetically recreate the 3.6-metre tall South Island giant moa, backed by $15 million (£11 million) in funding from Jackson and his partner, Fran Walsh. The venture also involves the New Zealand-based Ngai Tahu Research Centre.

"The movies are my day job, and the moa are my fun thing I do," Jackson said. "Every New Zealand schoolchild has a fascination with the moa."
However, many scientists outside the company believe that reintroducing extinct species into the modern environment is highly unlikely to succeed, reports the Express US.
Scientific divide
Instead, it might be possible to genetically modify existing animals to replicate certain traits. There is a divide among scientists about the merits of such projects, with some expressing concerns that the focus on reviving extinct species could divert attention and resources away from efforts to protect and conserve species that still exist.
The moa, a long-necked bird that inhabited New Zealand for 4,000 years before being hunted to extinction around 600 years ago, has garnered significant international interest. A large skeleton of the bird was transported to England in the 19th century and is currently on display at the Yorkshire Museum.
Deextinction timeline
In contrast to Colossal's work with dire wolves, the moa project is still in its early stages. The endeavour began approximately two years ago when Jackson learned about the company's initiatives to genetically recreate or "de-extinct" species such as the woolly mammoth and the dire wolf.
Jackson then introduced Colossal to experts he had met through his own collection of moa bones, which he claims comprises between 300 and 400 bones. In New Zealand, it is legal to buy and sell moa bones discovered on private land, but not on public conservation areas, and their export is also prohibited.
Genetic secrets
The initial phase of the moa project involves identifying well-preserved bones from which DNA can potentially be extracted, according to Beth Shapiro, Colossal's chief scientist. Scientists are attempting to unravel the genetic secrets behind what made the extinct moa unique by comparing its DNA with that of living birds like the tinamou and emu.
In a similar venture, Colossal analysed ancient DNA from the long-gone dire wolves, employing CRISPR to edit genes in a current-day grey wolf.
Biologist Shapiro outlined specific challenges faced in the quest to bring birds back from extinction, with bird embryology differing significantly from that of mammals, making mammalian IVF techniques unusable.

Shapiro conveyed the complexities of such scientific endeavours, saying: "There's lots of different scientific hurdles that need to be overcome with any species that we pick as a candidate for de-extinction," and underlined that their efforts are just beginning: "We are in the very early stages."
As Colossal presses forward with hopes of resurrecting a giant bird resembling the moa, Duke University's ecologist Stuart Pimm voiced concerns over reintroduction to the wild, asking: "Can you put a species back into the wild once you've exterminated it there?" He cast doubt on the success of rewilding attempts, arguing: "I think it's exceedingly unlikely that they could do this in any meaningful way."
Pimm also warned of possible dangers, stating: "This will be an extremely dangerous animal."

Oral sex could increase your risk of SKIN cancer – the 3 ways to protect yourself
SCIENTISTS have discovered a new cause of skin cancer - and it's linked to oral sex. Human papillomavirus (HPV), one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK, is primarily transmitted through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity, including oral sex. 3 3 It's previously been linked to increased risk of several cancers, including anal, head and neck, throat, penile cancer and cervical cancer. But now, US researchers say the virus could also cause a deadly form of skin cancer - squamous cell carcinoma. Scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) discovered the link after a 34-year-old woman was referred to the clinic. She presented with 43 spots of the skin cancer on her face, hands and legs. But while she had surgery to remove them, as well as immunotherapy, the cancer returned. Doctors first suspected sun damage and a weak immune system, but later found the beta-HPV virus had inserted into her skin cells' DNA and was producing viral proteins, taking control of the cells. Dr Andrea Lisco, a virologist who led the study, said: "This discovery could completely change how we think about the development, and consequently the treatment, of [skin cancer] in people who have a health condition that compromises immune function. "It suggests that there may be more people out there with aggressive forms of [skin cancer] who have underlying immune defect and could benefit from treatments targeting the immune system." The woman in the case report was found to have a genetic condition that weakened her T-cells (a type of immune cell), leaving her unable to fight off the virus. Doctors treated her with a stem cell transplant to restore her immune system. Crumbling shells, melting ice – and a wildlife boom: what recreating Scott's Antarctic trip reveals about our seas today
Three glass specimen jars full of satsuma-sized echinoderms, or sea urchins, sit on Dr Hugh Carter's desk in the Natural History Museum. Each one, collected from the depths of the Southern Ocean by polar teams led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, Capt Robert Falcon Scott and the Norwegian Carsten Borchgrevink, tells a tale of heroic exploration and scientific endeavour. Now, more than a century later, Carter, the Natural History Museum's (NHM) curator of marine invertebrates, hopes the preserved Antarctic urchins, 50 in all, will help tell a different, increasingly urgent story of modern times: how changes in the world's southernmost waters may be affecting marine life. In January, the biologist undertook a six-week long research trip to visit the exact sites sampled by Borchgrevink's Southern Cross, Shackleton's Discovery and Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova expedition between 1898 and 1913. His voyage, part of a multidisciplinary expedition run by the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (Niwa), supported by the Antarctic Science Platform in New Zealand, partly retraced the route made by Scott. Scott and four other explorers, including the chief scientist, Edward Wilson, perished in the ice around a month after the samples sitting on Carter's desk were collected. In the Antarctic, which is warming at twice the global average, a lack of baseline scientific data makes it difficult to assess the physical and biological changes that have occurred over time. Carter's theory is that comparing the 'tests' or shell of the urchins in the NHM's collection with modern samples will help reveal more about the impact of ocean acidification, often called the 'evil twin' of the climate crisis. Acidification is caused when carbon dioxide is rapidly absorbed into the ocean, where it then reacts with water molecules leading to a fall in the pH of the seawater. Preliminary findings on Carter's ship, the deep water research vessel the RV Tangaroa, appeared to confirm his worst fears. 'We know that the ocean has been getting more acidic but in most cases we don't know what the impacts are,' he says. 'We had a suspicion that [due to ocean acidification] you would get less calcium carbonate in the water. This would make it harder to build a body if that body is made from calcium carbonate.' Corals, sea snails, oysters and small single-celled organisms called foraminifera, a component of plankton, all rely on calcium carbonate to build shells. Calcium carbonate dissolves in acid very easily, so the more acid, the harder it is for animals such as these to survive. In June, new research showed that 60% of global waters had breached the safe limit for acidification, in what scientists described as a 'ticking timebomb' for planetary health. While the tests of the historical urchins on Carter's desk were 'robust and healthy', those brought to the surface in January were thinner and more fragile in comparison, so much so that they were crushed by the force of the hose used to clean them. 'All the ones we collected were fragile and some of them collapsed,' says Carter. 'From initial appearances, the modern specimens we collected have weaker tests than the historical ones, but we need to do more work to establish to what degree and exactly what is causing this. 'There are confounding variables of course, but the fact the new ones are thinner is concerning.' The biological implications of an acidifying ocean could be enormous, adds Carter. 'It could make the seas unliveable for things with a calcium skeleton.' During the expedition, the impact of the climate crisis was tangible; some of the study sites were only accessible because of melting ice. And it coincided with stark findings that the level of global sea ice fell to its lowest recorded level, a symptom of our warming planet. But there were positive finds on the expedition, too. Carter saw as many as 150 whales on his trip, as well as what he described as 'crazy levels' of wildlife on the western edge of Coulman island, which had 17 species of starfish in just 100 metres, the same number found in all of the UK's shallow waters. 'It is a thrill to know that the environment is not as bad in some parts of the world as it could be,' he says. 'It's the only bit of the world you don't see any plastic or human impacts from fishing.' Prof Craig Stevens, an Niwa oceanographer who co-led the Tangaroa expedition, described their work as 'sweet and sour'. 'This lack of ice is having knock-on effects for not only the regional ocean but the whole planet. This work is very sweet and sour. It is amazing to get the opportunity to advance the science, but at the same time, we are catching glimpses of a future for the planet that we really want to avoid. It brings home in a very tangible way the need to limit emissions of climate-affecting gases.'
