WHISKAS® Brand Reveals Canadian Cities with The Happiest Cats
TORONTO, April 30, 2025 /CNW/ - Today the WHISKAS® Brand, proudly part of the Mars family of brands, released the findings of the WHISKAS® brand Cat Happiness Scale. The WHISKAS® brand partnered with experts from Waltham Petcare Science Institute to identify the top behaviours associated with cat happiness and then uncovered cities where they are most frequently displayed by Canadian cats on social media.
While this research identified the cities that are home to Canada's happiest cats, many felines in shelters may need a little more happiness. That is why today the WHISKAS® brand is also supporting select animal shelters across the country by fulfilling items from their Wish Lists, ranging from cat food, toys and products to general supplies the shelter needs.
Canadian Cities with the Happiest Cats
From displaying behaviours related to relaxation and affection such as purring and slow blinking, the playful and insightful Cat Happiness Scale rates Canadian cities based on a set of "happy cat behaviours," revealing what makes Canadian cats purr with contentment and educating Canadian pet parents to help them better understand their cats.
Leading the list of cities that are home to Canada's happiest cats is Hamilton, Canada's new happy cat capital. The full list of top 10 cities for happiest cats are: Hamilton (ON), Laval (QC), Ottawa (ON), Vancouver (BC), Quebec City (QC), Markham (ON), Winnipeg (MB), Montreal (QC), Kitchener (ON) and Gatineau (QC).
"Cats have a reputation for being aloof and difficult to understand. However, they are excellent pets with unique personalities," said Dr. Tammie King, Senior Research Manager, Waltham Petcare Science Institute. "For all cat parents who wonder about how to read their cats, you're not alone. Overall, people tend to find it difficult to interpret their cat's body language and emotional state. With the Cat Happiness Scale, derived from the scientific understanding of cat behaviour, we love the opportunity to help Canadian cat parents better understand their pets, and ultimately strengthen the human-cat bond."
Helping Even More Cats in Need
The WHISKAS® brand knows that not all cats have the same opportunities to experience happiness. That's why the brand is launching the Wish Lists initiative to spread happiness to cats by fulfilling items including food, toys and supplies from the wish lists of the following shelters:
"This wish list fulfillment effort by the WHISKAS® brand will help us greatly in terms of our ability to keep the cats in our care as happy as possible while they wait for their forever homes," said Robyn Roy, Marketing & Communications Coordinator, Cochrane and Area Humane Society. "Flirt, a cherished resident cat at CAHS since 2023, loves to get rubs and snuggles from our volunteers while playing with the new toys donated from our wish list, fulfilled by the WHISKAS® brand. Flirt brings cozy companionship and a daily dose of affection and happiness to everyone she meets. At 15.5 years young, she continues to thrive with WHISKAS® as a part of her daily routine."
Additionally, the WHISKAS® brand team is encouraging cat parents and cat lovers to get involved and help spread happiness to all shelter cats across the country. They can donate wish list items to their local shelter and claim a free WHISKAS Pouch product.*
"This isn't just about celebrating Canada's happiest cats, it's about spreading that joy to even more cats across Canada," says Animesh Kumar, Marketing Director, Mars Pet Nutrition Canada. "We're giving cat owners a fun way to identify markers of happiness, both physically and emotionally, while inspiring people to support shelter cats who deserve the same love and happiness. Through this initiative, we're furthering the WHISKAS® brand's mission to create one purr at a time, while aspiring to achieve the Mars Petcare Purpose: A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS."

WHISKAS® Cat Happiness Study Methodology
This study used social listening to determine which cities in Canada have the happiest cats, analyzing thousands of user-generated images of cats posted on Instagram and TikTok by owners in major Canadian cities. Only non-commercial, non-AI, and naturally captured content was included. This social media content was coded using a custom scorecard informed by the Waltham Pet Science Institute's SHINE ™ framework, focusing on key cat happiness indicators. The results provide a ranking of 10 Canadian cities based on highest percentage of positive happy cat behaviours.

Canadian War Museum unveils new display marking the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires Français
OTTAWA, ON, June 18, 2025 /CNW/ - In honour of the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, the Canadian War Museum unveils a new display. It marks the century-long history of Commissionaires by highlighting the significant contributions of the organization from its beginnings to the present day. Visitors can find the display in Commissionaires Way, the corridor connecting the Museum's main exhibitions to the LeBreton Gallery. Established to provide meaningful employment to veterans, Commissionaires was founded in Montréal in 1925. Since then, the not-for-profit organization has grown to 22,000 employees, including many veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It is the largest private-sector employer of veterans in Canada. "We are pleased to present this display highlighting the longstanding relationship between Commissionaires and Canada's veterans," said James Whitham, Director General of the Canadian War Museum. "The display offers visitors a chance to learn about the organization's evolution and its vital role in supporting veterans over a century." "We are delighted with how Commissionaires Way recognizes some of the many extraordinary people who served and continue to serve the Corps throughout our century of service to Canadians," said Commissionaires Chief of Staff, Captain Harry Harsch, OMM, CD, RCN (Ret'd). Developed by the Canadian War Museum, the display highlights veterans from all decades of Commissionaires. It features the Victoria Cross (VC) medal set that belonged to Major Benjamin Handley Geary of the East Surrey Regiment, who earned the decoration for bravery at Hill 60 during the First World War. Also featured is Lieutenant Colin Fraser Barron of the 48th Highlanders, who received the Victoria Cross for capturing three German machine-gun positions in the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele. Modern-day Commissionaires in the display include Ajit Singh and Rodney McAlpine, whose quick thinking saved lives while on the job, and who were recognized with the Commissionaires Medal of Bravery. Also included is Major (Ret'd) Sandra Perron, Canada's first female infantry officer, veterans' advocate, and bestselling author, who serves on the board of Commissionnaires du Québec. The Museum extends its sincere appreciation to Commissionaires for its generous support in bringing this important initiative to life. This journey has always been about creating a space that offers dignity, comfort, and safety because these women deserve it." Contributing to a stronger economy for Newfoundland and Labrador: Canada announces a sustainable increase in Northern cod TAC
ST. JOHN'S, NL, /CNW/ - Cod is an important species to Newfoundland and Labrador. Commercial and recreational fishing has shaped the province's history, economy, and culture. Today, the Minister of Fisheries, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, announced management plans for Northern cod (2J3KL) and Capelin (2J3KLPs) for the 2025-26 seasons, reinforcing support for Newfoundland and Labrador's coastal communities. Recent scientific data and assessments confirm Northern cod has remained stable since 2017 and is at a higher level than previously understood from the 2024 assessment, allowing for a responsible total allowable catch (TAC) increase from 18,000 tonnes (t) to 38,000 t. Capelin is a key food source for Northern cod and other species, and plays a significant role in sustaining the marine ecosystem. While Capelin populations are stable, it is anticipated that stocks will decrease to recent average levels. As such, the TAC for Capelin will remain at 14,533 t. To inform future management decisions for the recreational cod fishery – known to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as the food fishery – the government will launch public consultations. The goal is to gather input on this fishery, and discuss the distinct differences in the health of the province's three cod populations. While the stocks on the south and west coasts remain in the Critical Zone, the Northern cod stock status has improved. Recognizing the importance of cod to coastal communities, the management measures for the recreational groundfish fishery will remain unchanged for 2025. The government is launching a new voluntary pilot program for tour boat operations certified by Transport Canada, giving them the flexibility to retain fish seven days a week while eliminating the catch-and-release aspect. With the new tagging system, passengers can now keep two groundfish per day. As these measures come into effect this season, we remain committed to ongoing assessment, consultation, and adjustments to ensure responsible fisheries management decisions. Quote "Fishing is at the heart of Newfoundland and Labrador, and this is reinforced with every conversation I have with commercial harvesters and crew, plant workers, recreational fishers, and Indigenous groups. There are opportunities now to responsibly grow the industry and reflect on how we manage the food fishery. We often say that the world needs more Canada, but Canada also needs more Newfoundland and Labrador – and a stronger cod fishery will help make that happen." The Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries "Canada is a maritime nation, with more coastline than any country in the world, and the fishing industry plays a vital role in our economy and coastal communities. Fisheries and Oceans Canada's new voluntary tagging pilot program empowers tour boat operators to support sustainable marine practices — advancing conservation and our Canadian economy." The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport Quick Facts The total landed value of Northern cod in 2024 was approximately $37.5 million benefiting harvesters, crew members, plant workers, and Indigenous groups in coastal communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). There are three cod stocks in NL with differences in their overall stock health. While the stocks on the south and west coasts are at lower levels, we recognize that the Northern cod's stock status has improved. People with permanent disabilities can continue to apply for a designation that allows someone else to catch their daily groundfish limit during the recreational groundfish fishery on their behalf.
