Ireland examining report that US deportees flight stopped in Shannon
DublincTypeface:> Ireland is examining a report that a flight carrying deportees from the US to Africa, against a judge's order, stopped at an Irish airport.
The New York Times reported that a plane carrying eight deportees, in violation of a court order by a federal judge in Boston, stopped at Shannon Airport this week.
The judge had barred the US administration from deporting people to countries that were not their own without giving them enough time to object. 'I'm trying to establish the facts on this now in real time, because I'm aware of the US media reports,' Ireland's deputy premier, Simon Harris, told RTE Radio on Thursday. (PA Media/dpa)

Two Israeli ministers sanctioned by UK, Canada, Australia and others
PA Media/dpa London Two Israeli government ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, have been sanctioned by the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway because of their comments on Gaza. Ben-Gvir, the security minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government, and Smotrich, the finance minister, will both face a travel ban and see their assets frozen. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the two Israeli ministers had been 'inciting violence against Palestinian people for months and months and months, they have been encouraging egregious abuses of human rights.' In a joint statement with foreign ministers from the four other countries who have announced sanctions, Lammy said the two senior Israelis had also incited 'serious abuses of Palestinian human rights.' The statement added: 'These actions are not acceptable. This is why we have taken action now - to hold those responsible to account.' Both have been criticized for their hardline stance on the war in Gaza. Smotrich has campaigned against allowing aid into Gaza, while Ben-Gvir has called for Gaza's people to be resettled from the territory.

Gauff was the better player: Sabalenka backtracks on final comments
PA Media/DPA Paris Aryna Sabalenka has admitted Coco Gauff fully deserved to beat her in the French Open final, having been a less than gracious loser on Saturday evening. The world number one dished up a portion of sour grapes in her press conference following Gauff's dramatic three-set win, complaining that the ball kept coming off the frame of the 21-year-old's American's racket. She added: 'I think she won the match not because she played incredible, just because I made all of those mistakes.' But Sabalenka, 27, has now rowed back on her comments in a post on Instagram. She wrote: 'Yesterday was a tough one. Coco handled the conditions much better than I did and fully deserved the win. 'She was the better player yesterday, and I want to give her the credit she earned. 'You all know me. I'm always going to be honest and human in how I process these moments. I made over 70 unforced errors, so I can't pretend it was a great day for me. 'But both things can be true. I didn't play my best, and Coco stepped up and played with poise and purpose. She earned that title. Respect.' Meanwhile Gauff said she wants her French Open victory to give hope to 'Americans that look like me'. The 21-year-old, now a two-time grand slam champion, says she wants to bring 'hope and light' to black Americans who feel under-represented. 'It means a lot and obviously there's a lot going on in our country right now,' she said. 'But just to be able to be a representation of that and a representation of, I guess, people that look like me in America who maybe don't feel as supported during this time period, and so just being that reflection of hope and light for those people.' Gauff won the WTA Finals in Riyadh in November, days after the re-election of US President Donald Trump. 'I remember after the election and everything, it kind of felt (a) down period a little bit,' she added. 'My mum told me during Riyadh, 'Just try to win the tournament just to give something for people to smile for'. 'So that's what I was thinking about today when holding that (trophy). 'And then seeing the flags in the crowd means a lot. You know, some people may feel some type of way about being patriotic and things like that.

UK aims to ‘deepen' India ties
London: British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will seek to deepen UK-India economic ties as he visits New Delhi this weekend, saying Britain's recently agreed trade deal with the country is 'just the start of our ambitions.' Trade and migration will be at the top of the agenda for the Foreign Secretary's trip, during which he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar. The Foreign Office said Lammy, who was expected in New Delhi on Saturday, would also raise 'the recent escalation in tensions following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, and how the welcomed sustained period of peace can be best supported in the interests of stability in the region.' Pakistan and India agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire last month after rising hostilities between the two nuclear-armed rivals followed a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. Ahead of the visit, Lammy said: 'Signing a free trade agreement is just the start of our ambitions - we're building a modern partnership with India for a new global era.' (PA Media/dpa)
