'I tried wedding guest dresses you can buy for under £50 from M&S, Next, Tesco and more'
As we inch closer to the summer, that can mean one thing. Aside from anticipating some sunny weather, it marks the beginning of the busy wedding season.
If you have found your calendar is beginning to get booked up, then chances are you'll need a cute new frock. However, with costs remaining high for, well everything, it can be handy to stick to a budget.
Of course, you don't need to go for a designer or a major brand, as the high street is packed with stylish options. From plunging necklines to satin slips, there is something that will suit everyone's personal style.
To help showcase what you can get for under £50, Zoe Cripps, Head of Fashion at the Mirror recently completed a deep dive on 27 different summer wedding guest dresses you can get from the likes of M&S, F&F at Tesco, Next and much, much more.
Highlighting a snapshot of 10 of the dresses she picked, we have provided her full thoughts just below.
New Look Black Zebra Print Ruffle Trimmed Maxi Dress
Zoe says:"This dress is right up my street. It has a very Rat and Boa look to it, but at a fraction of the price. The fit of the gown is also excellent for a high-street dress, with a hidden zipper and a slim bodice. Extra points go to New Look for nailing this season's trending print: zebra."
Next Burgundy Red Satin Cowl Neck Strappy Tie Back Midi Slip Dress
Zoe says:"I chose the burgundy red shade for this slip dress, but you can also get it in a brown and cream cow print or a traditional black. I can't fault the fabric – the satin feels soft and luxuriously thick – and the adjustable straps mean the cowl neck didn't sit too low on my chest. The only reason I'm not giving it four stars is because I would have liked it to nip me in at the waist a little more, rather than fall so straight."
Marks & Spencer Mesh Jersey Column Midi Dress
Zoe says: "This dress really took me aback. I had low expectations because I wasn't sure of the colour, and I thought the fit might create a boxy shape, but I was very wrong. The fabric has some stretch to it, which helped define my waist. The slash neckline and the double-lined material also give it a much more expensive look and feel."
Boohoo Floral Ruffle One Shoulder Maxi Dress in Merlot
Zoe says:"For years now, Boohoo has been my secret destination for occasionwear dresses. Not only are the prices always low, but the quality of its dresses is usually much higher than you might imagine. This one-shoulder maxi with ruffle detailing fit me like a glove, and I felt great in it. I'll absolutely be wearing this to events over the summer."
Wallis Satin Puff Sleeve Button Midaxi Dress
Zoe says: "It wouldn't really occur to me to go to Wallis for occasionwear dresses, but I was pleasantly surprised by the high-quality, low-price dresses on offer if you shop the brand on Debenhams.com. This pretty butter yellow midi has so much detailing that makes it worth much more than £39, in my opinion. The little loop buttons down the top, the tulip-like neckline, the pretty puff sleeves and the satin fabric – it's a Disney dress without all the drama."
Quiz Lemon Bardot Bow Skater Dress
Price: £44.99 online and in store
Zoe says: "When I unpacked this from the bag, I was fully prepared to dismiss it. The fabric has a scuba feel that I don't really like, and it looked tiny. I'm happy I tried it on, though, because it made me feel very pretty. Though it's a mini, the length of the skirt is long enough to save my dignity, and the off-the-shoulder bow neckline is much more flattering than I first thought it would be. It's probably one I see fitting in better at the races, but still a nice option for someone looking for a shorter style of dress. "
F&F at Tesco Ruffle Ivory Spot Slip Dress
Price: £25 in store only
Zoe says: "Okay bear with me on the white. I wanted to include an option for someone who had been tasked with wearing monochrome to a wedding, because white and black guest dresses are a top trend for 2025 weddings. This, however, probably wouldn't be my top pick. The satin fabric, adjustable straps and midi cut are all very nice, but I felt a little drowned by this, and I didn't love the floppy ruffling around the chest. I think it lends itself to someone with a bigger chest than mine."
George at Asda Orange Tie Back Trapeze Midi Dress
Zoe says:"There's no denying that supermarkets have become the 'it' places to go to nab a trending item for less, but this isn't the one I'd reach for, personally. There's a pretty tie-back bow detail on the back of the neckline, which I did like, and the block orange shade is great for an outdoor summer event, but the fit was just too oversized, and the fabric was a bit thin (albeit very soft). I'd say this is better as a beach-to-bar holiday look."
River Island Blue Sleeveless Cut Out Poplin Midi Dress
Zoe says:"As someone who shies away from bold patterns, this dress was a bit of a wild card for me, but I ended up really liking it. The fact that it's crafted with a structured polyester fabric makes it feel more like an event dress than a daytime cotton one, and the cutout back detail adds a nice touch (low enough so you can still wear a bra)."
Pretty Little Thing Brown Floral Chiffon Frill Plunge Strappy Maxi Dress
Zoe says: "This was the only dress of the 27 that I thought I'd have to omit from the roundup. I love the chocolate brown colour with the pattern – it's a great shade pick that really taps into 2025 trends – but that's all the positives I have. The leg slit came up almost to my naval, so I would be flashing everyone at a wedding. The straps were adjustable, but even on the tightest they could go, the front of the dress still draped down, giving another flashing incident opportunity. I don't know who the fit model is at PLT, but unfortunately, it doesn't suit my shape or size at all."

EastEnders fans reveal soap legend to return with major clue
The BBC soap has been sharing teasers over the weekend, ahead of new executive producer Ben Wadey's debut episode on Monday (June 16). It comes as he recently hinted that something 'big' is about to happen in Walford next week. Ben revealed he hopes it will 'get everyone talking' and 'it's only just the beginning'. EastEnders' Top 5 Villains Earlier today (June 15) on X, the @bbceastenders account shared a clip through the eyes of someone walking past some market stalls in Albert Square, which viewers believe is a nod to an iconic scene with a popular character who is rumoured to be returning after two decades. Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed the teaser focused where Zoe Slater's famous 'you ain't my mother!' scene took place in 2001, after she found out Kat Slater was her mum. Zoe, who is played by Michelle Ryan, is set to return to EastEnders as it reportedly feels like the 'perfect' moment for the actress to make a huge comeback. A source previously told The Sun: 'Bosses have repeatedly reached out to Michelle over the years, but the timing has never been quite right. 'People are still talking about her character, so it's a real coup to bring her back. 'She feels like now is the perfect moment — and there was an exciting script on the table.' EastEnders fans convinced Zoe Slater returns to BBC soap tomorrow Reacting to the teaser clip on X, someone commented: 'I didn't see any signs with her name on it this time, but the whole thing takes place where 'You ain't my Mother!' took place. Plus I felt there was an emphasis on the clothes stall where she used to work…' Someone else shared: 'Ah yes. The same place where you ain't my muvva happened.' A third wrote: 'Oh Zoe is SO back because I remember this scene!!!' While this fan said: ''You ain't my muvva' location… Zoe…?!' Others also agreed EastEnders were hinting at Zoe's arrival as one put: 'Deffo Zoe it's stoped and blinked at the slater stall.' 'Zoe used to work on the stalls,' this viewer chimed in. A user also stated: 'Got to be Zoe I have never seen a market stall selling cat (Kat) things.' Recommended reading: Why isn't EastEnders on BBC iPlayer on Monday? It seems Monday's EastEnders episode really will be a "big" one as it won't be uploaded to BBC iPlayer at 6am. Instead, it will be shown on BBC One from 7.30pm and iPlayer at the same time. EastEnders confirmed the schedule change, as a post on X said: "Schedule Alert! #EastEnders, Monday 16th June, 7:30pm on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer. Trust us, you won't want to miss it! (There will be no 6am iPlayer drop).'

Top picks from Rochelle Humes' Next summer collection
Writer Nisha Mal has been obsessed with Rochelle Humes' latest Next collection and highlights some of her favourite summer pieces Next has been going big with its summer drop this season. Most notably, the retailer's collection with Rochelle Humes has caught my eye, as it includes some classic, tailored pieces that will withstand micro-trends. The collection consists of timeless linen fabrics, colourful fitted coats, and lightweight summer knits for the UK's unpredictable climes. One of my favourite pieces from the collection is this Neutral Cotton Linen Blend Trophy Jacket, which can be worn throughout the year. Priced at £64, it is great for the office or a fancy dinner on occasions when I don't know what to wear but want to look like I've made an effort. The neutral colour means I can pair it with almost all of the accessories and bags I have in my wardrobe. It can be worn with jeans and trousers, or even a leather mini skirt and tights for wintertime looks. Linen has no give and can often feel restrictive, which one reviewer found: "Not suitable. Material stiff and thick, and the jacket too short." Alternatively, New Look is selling a cropped, boucle trophy jacket which is considerably cheaper at £29.99 (originally £49.99). The navy jacket has chunky gold buttons and a collarless design. In keeping with linen, Next's stunning blue co-ord is also worth shouting about. It comprises a longline sleeveless waistcoat (£39), and then buyers have the choice between either a longline skirt (£34) or a pair of city shorts (£26). The sky blue set is made from a textured finish material. I particularly like the waistcoat, which has a high neck, and is finished with front pockets and a button-down fastening. However, the skirt loses points for me mostly due to its long, ankle-length. Standing at 5ft (5 ft 1 on a good day), it's a shame it isn't offered in petite. If it were a midi or even knee-length, I might get away with it, but seeing as it's so long, there's no chance it's going to fall right on me, unless I get it tailored (a job I will most definitely not do). For shoppers a similar height to me, the set's city shorts are the better choice. For a boho-inspired co-ord look to Nobody's Child, where this Blue Tie Dye set is offered. It comprises a cami with spaghetti straps (£49) and a matching long, floaty skirt (£99). I think this set would look beautiful worn on holiday, or at a festival paired with cowboy boots. Returning to Rochelle Humes' summer collection, this Brown Glossy Satin Maxi co-ord is ideal for upcoming summer weddings and special occasions. It comprises a halterneck top and a long, flowy skirt. Available in regular or petite sizing, the maxi-length skirt is decorated with a polka dot all-over print, and has a floaty pleated skirt (£50). The accompanying blouse (£32) has the exact same print. and has a tie-bow fastening at the back. The skirt has 12 customer reviews, mostly positive; however, one shopper has a warning about the material writing: "Absolutely loved the colour and fit of the skirt but creased so badly." For a casual holiday-inspired set look to Boden, where shoppers can pick up a colourful set comprising a loose-fitting pair of trousers (£120) and a matching, floaty shirt (£80). The Sieena linen set is all-white and features a tropical print all over it, including little banana prints, seashells, lobsters and even a little bird. My last Next pick is this knitted jumper, priced at £35. As we all know, British summertime is mostly a let-down, and having a jumper at hand is useful for on/off downpours. The keyhole design means I won't get overheated, and it's lightweight enough to pop into my handbag without taking up much space. The ecru-white knit comes in sizes small, medium, large, extra large, and extra large. Rochelle pairs it with light-wash jeans and tousled locks, but it'd look equally stylish with denim cut-offs or city shorts. The knit is also available in a blue colourway with pink and green stripes. In the reviews, a buyer praised its design and comfort, writing: "I love this jumper. It's so comfortable. I wanted a jumper that hung well, and this certainly does that. A slightly off-white colour. Worth the money." However, another found it too short, saying: "Loved the jumper but had to return as it was too short on me - I'm only 5ft3." Over at Roman, shoppers can snap up a Crochet Tunic Top (£40) in white, teal, black, and beige. It's the perfect holiday piece to wear over a swimsuit or with shorts. Choose from sizes 10-20.
