Scott Hanson reveals fate after ESPN's new billion-dollar deal to takeover RedZone sparks fan meltdown

Scott Hanson has confirmed he will be retained as host of NFL RedZone after ESPN's new billion-dollar deal acquired the show and sparked a fan meltdown that the iconic broadcaster may now longer be the property's presenter. Hanson confirmed the news, promising to continue to be the narrator for seven hours of live football every Sunday during the regular season. RedZone shows live highlights from every NFL game as they happen, allowing fans to not channel surf and see all the major plays from the gridiron in one medium. Although changes to the presentation may happen under the ESPN banner, losing Hanson was a step too far for some, with a massive sigh of relief coming from NFL fans. 'It's official. (& for those wondering: yes, I will still be hosting RedZone.) Fired up for a great season! Optimistic about this new partnership! (& I get to call @AdamSchefter 'colleague' for the 2nd time in my career… nice bonus!),' Hanson said on X. Schefter, the NFL's chief news-breaker, replied, 'My honor.' RedZone is moving to ESPN after the sports-programming network acquired the iconic show Still a little up in the air with the move to ESPN is whether RedZone will stay commercial free, which would be a first for the sports programming network. Hanson did not comment on that on his post, drawing the ire of some fans. RedZone was on its own channel for cable packages, allowing the need for no ads. 'If there's commercials I'm taking my talents to StreamEast,' one NFL fan said. 'I can already see you co hosting with Buzz Lightyear one week because Disney owns RedZone now,' a second football fan said. The first edition of RedZone under the NFL banner takes place in a little over a month, with beloved fans of Hanson and the format waiting for any word on if there will be changes after ESPN's monster deal. As part of the deal in acquiring the NFL Network, RedZone, and other properties, the NFL now owns a 10% stake in ESPN.

How AFL coach found out he was going to be sacked with five words in a phone call - before he took a sly shot at his club disguised as a joke

Sacked Melbourne Demons coach Simon Goodwin was at home on August 4 when his phone rang - and it wasn't good news. On the other end was Brad Green, the club's president. 'Mate, we need to talk,' Green reportedly said. And so began the premiership-winning mentor's immediate exit from the Demons. Green was then joined at Goodwin's house by head of football Alan Richardson, interim chief executive David Chippindall and board member Angela Williams. The quartet wanted to present a united front, and deliver the news to Goodwin personally. After delivering a historic flag in 2021, Goodwin deserved that. Given the Demons currently sit in 12th spot, the coach, 48, was somewhat blindsided by the decision. Other clubs are in far worse positions, namely West Coast, Richmond and North Melbourne. But Goodwin - who also won premierships as a player with the Adelaide Crows in 1997 and 1998 - knows the AFL is a results business. Another season where Melbourne won't play finals footy was deemed unacceptable by club management, so Goodwin was moved on. Polarising commentator Kane Cornes felt the playing group - and Goodwin - haven't evolved and the decision was inevitable. 'If you're looking at all the important factors, the way they play has been the issue for years,' he said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters this week. 'They are stuck in 2015 with their game styles, contest and defence, he (Goodwin) hasn't been able to improve that. He hasn't had a game style that stacks up in 2025. 'He hasn't been able to solve that. The (club) culture is (also) a mess, the senior players appear to do whatever they want.' Goodwin fronted the media on Tuesday at the MCG - and the departing coach couldn't resist firing off a bullet disguised as humour. 'I'm going to miss the players first and foremost,' he said. 'I have some amazing relationships with some blokes I've coached for an incredibly long what I won't miss is driving down to Casey.' It was a reference to the senior playing group often commuting to Casey Fields in Cranbourne - more than 50km from the CBD - for training sessions. Goodwin - who has already been linked to a move to Sydney next season - will receive a reported payout of $1.2million from the Demons, as he was contracted until 2026. Assistant Melbourne coach Troy Chaplin will step in as caretaker coach for the remainder of this season ahead of fixtures against the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Collingwood.

Keenan Allen reunites with Chargers on one-year deal

August 6 - Veteran receiver Keenan Allen has rejoined the Los Angeles Chargers after spending the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears. The Chargers announced his return Tuesday evening. NFL Network reported Allen has agreed to a one-year, $8.52 million deal. Allen was a six-time Pro Bowl selection during 11 seasons with the Chargers from 2013-23 -- the first four when the franchise was located in San Diego before the move to Los Angeles. Allen ranks second in Chargers history with 904 receptions and 10,530 receiving yards, trailing Antonio Gates (955 and 11,841, respectively), in both categories. Allen (59) is third on the franchise's career receiving touchdowns list behind Gates (116) and fellow Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (81). Allen, 33, ranks third among active NFL players with 974 receptions and has collected 100 or more catches on five occasions, including a team-record 108 in 2023. He is sixth among active players with 11,274 career receiving yards and eighth with 66 touchdown catches. He has played in 154 career NFL games. Last season, Allen had 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns for the Bears. --Field Level Media
