Communities urged to preserve cultural heritage

TONGOD: Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam has called on Sabah's diverse ethnic communities to take greater initiative in preserving and promoting their cultural identities as a means to strengthen unity and harmony in the state. Speaking at the Tongod District-level Kaamatan Festival 2025 in Kampung Entilibon on Saturday, Joachim emphasized the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage amid modernization and globalization. 'Every ethnic and sub-ethnic group in the state should take pride in their inherited cultural identities and work harder to showcase their uniqueness,' he said. 'We must preserve the rich traditions of the Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, and Rungus (KDMR) communities, including traditional attire, music, and customs, and ensure they are passed down to future generations.' Joachim, who also serves as the Minister of Local Government and Housing, highlighted the Kaamatan festival as a vital platform for fostering unity among Sabah's multiracial communities and showcasing the state's cultural diversity. He also stressed the role of harmonious interethnic relations in maintaining national stability. 'Collaboration and mutual respect among people of different backgrounds are the foundation of stability, peace, and progress in Sabah,' he said. The Deputy Chief Minister expressed appreciation to Kuamut State Assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah, Tongod District Officer Yuesri Ismail Yusof, and the organizing committee for their efforts in hosting the three-day celebration, which began on May 7. The festival featured cultural performances, handicraft exhibitions, and the district-level Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant. Joachim also noted the economic benefits of the Kaamatan celebration at the district level and reiterated the government's commitment to statewide development, including in rural districts such as Tongod. 'Give the current government a chance. Over the past five years under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), the state's revenue has grown, reaching nearly RM7 billion in 2023 and 2024. These funds have been channeled back to the people through various forms of assistance,' he said. He encouraged communities to celebrate Kaamatan at every level — in villages, schools, and organizations — in line with this year's theme, 'Kaamatan for All,' which he described as fitting for Sabah's peaceful and diverse society. Meanwhile, Tongod District Officer Yuesri thanked Joachim for officiating the event and acknowledged the Ministry of Local Government and Housing's support in upgrading the Entilibon hall, which improved the venue for community events. In a separate event, Joachim, accompanied by his Political Secretary and Telupid Assemblyman Datuk Jonneybone Kurum, also officiated the Kaamatan celebration for the Pekan Subdistrict in Kg. GRS ready to face polls: Hajiji

Only the seat allocations for the various components and whether it would go into battle on its own strength or in some form of collaboration and with whom remain to be finalised. Advertisement He said a series of training courses and preparations have already been carried out in each constituency. 'What's clear is that GRS is ready. We've set up our election machinery and conducted a series of courses to prepare for the polls,' he after officiating the District Police Headquarters (IPD) Hari Raya Qurban Programme in Tuaran, Saturday. Touching on Hari Raya Aidiladha, Hajiji hoped the occasion would inspire Malaysians, especially Muslims, to embrace the values of cooperation and selflessness. 'Sacrifice during Aidiladha isn't just about livestock, it's about being willing to compromise, work together, and make sacrifices for the greater good in our lives. During the symbolic Qurban ceremony, Hajiji was joined by State Rural Development Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim, State Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai who is also Kiulu Assemblyman, Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau and Pantai Dalit Assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya. Together, they handed over a sacrificial cow to Tuaran District Police Chief, Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin. GRS machinery fully prepared for State Election - Hajiji
Hajiji TUARAN (June 7): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is fully prepared to face the 17th state election, said its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said GRS has conducted a series of training sessions across constituencies and state assembly areas to strengthen the coalition's election machinery ahead of the polls. 'Clearly, GRS is ready. We have established our election machinery and conducted several rounds of training in preparation. 'However, discussions on seat allocations have yet to take place,' he told reporters after officiating the Aidiladha sacrificial ritual at the Tuaran District Police Headquarters on Saturday. Also present were Sabah Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Jahid Jahim; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; and Tuaran Police Chief, Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin. The Sabah Legislative Assembly will automatically dissolve on Nov 11, ending the five-year term that began with its official opening by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on Nov 12, 2020, paving the way for the 17th state election. Commenting on the cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the upcoming election, Hajiji said GRS remains open to discussions with the party's leaders. 'The last time I met the BN chairman (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) was before the fasting month. While political matters were discussed, there have been no further talks on collaboration or related issues since then. 'There is no issue with meeting; I have great respect for all friends, especially the BN chairman, and we are very open on this matter,' he said. However, he said any party-related matters, including the 17th state election and potential cooperation with other parties, must first be discussed with the GRS Supreme Council before any decisions are made. On Thursday, Hajiji said the GRS Supreme Council will be meeting soon to chart their direction for the 17th state election. He said the meeting would discuss on potential partners, seat allocations and other relevant matters.
