Madina: The Enlightened City review – a fact-filled tour of Islam's second holiest city

The Guardian30-06-2025
Here is a tour guide of the Islamic holy city best known in the UK as Medina in Saudi Arabia, a major destination for religious tourism, second only to Mecca. It is home to Islam's first mosque, and the prophet Muhammad's final resting place. For anyone planning a visit, this documentary about the city's sacred sites is well worth a watch. Non-Muslims may find themselves reaching for their phones to look up terms and historical events.
There is an antiquated, mildly academic feel to the voiceover, like a BBC documentary from the 1970s. It begins with a brief overview of the prophet's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, marking the start of the Islamic calendar. In the present day, the faces of pilgrims are a window into the significance of this spiritual journey for those with faith – but none are actually interviewed.
The main focus of the film is a tour of the city's landmarks: mostly mosques, but also a gleaming state-of-the-art Qur'an printing facility that produces 8m copies a year. Breathtaking aerial footage shows off the wonders of the sites, including the Prophet's Mosque, which has 250 incredible giant umbrellas that open to create a translucent roof over the courtyard when the temperature goes above 30C.
There is an overly informational quality to some of the film, with the narrator listing details about the car-parking facilities of one mosque and opening times of the reading room in another. But some of these facts are admittedly astounding: it takes a staff of 6,000 to keep the Prophet's Mosque spotless.

The five banned South Park that are too offensive for streaming

South Park is no stranger to controversy and lampooning the rich and famous, having 'ruined' Ed Sheeran's life and 'annoyed and overwhelmed' Meghan Markle. The cartoon's 299th episode, named Band in China, featured storylines so critical of China that the country's government even reportedly deleted virtually all content relating to the show from local internet servers. But on the show's 28th year anniversary, which also has a freakish knack for predicting events in the future, envisaging everything from Donald Trump's tweets to Brokeback Mountain, gone too far elsewhere? The answer is….yes, with the UK and US among countries that have either censored or pulled various South Park episodes. Let's take a look at the five banned South Park episodes and why they were controversial. Season 3 episode 5 follows Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny as they enlist the Super Best Friends, a parody of 70s cartoon Super Friends, to defeat, er, David Blaine's cult. However, the Super Best Friends comprised several religious figures, among them Jesus, Buddha and Moses, but it was the inclusion of Mohammed that sparked controversy. Due to a later death threat, outlined below, the episode was pulled from the South Park website some years later. When South Park moved homes to HBO Max and Paramount Plus in 2020, both streamers opted against making Cartoon Wars Part 1 and Part 2 available. Referring to the earlier controversy surrounding Super Best Friends, Part 1 sees the whole of the United States fearing for their lives after it is announced that Family Guy will air an episode with Muhammad as a character. Part 2, meanwhile, continues the story arc and follows Cartman, who believes that the episode is offensive to Muslims, travelling to Hollywood to try to get the episode pulled. The episodes were inspired by the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy, which began in response to a Danish newspaper's printing of cartoons depicting Muhammed in September 2005, leading to worldwide protests and occasionally violent demonstrations and riots in early 2006. 200 and 201 also stirred up controversy for the depiction of Mohammed, leading Comedy Central to censor his image when the episodes aired on linear TV in 2010. In 200, Tom Cruise and other celebrities mocked by South Park residents threaten a class action suit over their jibes, which they promise will be pulled only on the condition they can get Mohammed to meet them. 201 also harked back to past storylines and saw the return of the Super Best Friends, who team up to save South Park from the celebrities and their monster Mecha-Streisand, while Eric Cartman learns the true identity of his father. Fundamentalist organisation Revolution Muslim warned the creators risked murder for their depiction of Muhammed in the episodes; as a result, Comedy Central heavily censored portions of them by removing references to Muhammad and its closing speech. An Elephant Makes Love To A Pig is one of South Park's earliest episodes -and is the first season of the beloved cartoon. More Trending In it, the boys of South Park try to force Kyle's pet elephant to crossbreed with Eric's pet pig for a class project on genetic engineering, while Stan deals with issues with his violent sister Shelley. It was the latter storyline, which also saw Shelley set Stan on fire at one point, that led to censorship over fears children would copy her behaviour, particularly as it came soon after a house fire was blamed on a child recreating an episode Beavis and Butt-Head. 'Most beautiful woman in the world' who was trolled for her good looks could be Formula One's newest WAG after being spotted with star driver in leaked photo

F1 star Lance Stroll has been seen on holiday with a model and actor who has been described as 'the most beautiful woman in the world'. Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll was seen with Israeli model Yael Shelbia, 23, in an unknown location after an image of the pair went viral having been leaked online. Stroll was seen donning a light blue t-shirt and dark blue cap while Shelbia wore a patterned floral bikini accompanied by white trousers. Reacting to an image of the pair after it was posted to Instagram by the account @f1gossipofficial, users were stunned by the actress' looks. One user wrote: 'Gosh she is beautiful'. A second added: 'She is so beautiful'. Another claimed: 'it's from [Monday] in Tel Aviv'. A fourth wrote: 'Yael is so gorgeous I'm obsessed'. The sighting of her with Stroll comes after Shelbia was crowned champion of TC Candler's annual '100 Most Beautiful Faces of the Year' list back in 2021. Yael has modelled for Kim Kardashian's KKW Beauty and Kylie Jenner's skincare range and appeared alongside Lionel Messi in campaigns for FINNEY mobile. She said: 'I've received a large amount of support and love, also suitor messages I must admit and messages that weren't the nicest. They said the normal things that haters say, nothing worth any attention.' Yael claimed she was surprised to receive the title since she didn't realise she was participating in the contest, but that it's 'very exciting and flattering'. She started modelling when she was 16 after a local photographer noticed her Instagram snaps and asked her to participate in a photo shoot. At the time of winning the accolade, Yael was doing mandatory military service with the Israeli Air Force. Yael has modelled for Kim Kardashian's KKW Beauty and Kylie Jenner's skincare range and appeared alongside Lionel Messi in campaigns for FINNEY mobile The model placed 14th in the list in 2017, third in 2018, and second in 2019. The competition, which began in 1990, prides itself on being among the most 'diverse' beauty awards. It was founded by British film critic TC Candler, and has previously awarded Michelle Pfeiffer, Marion Cottilard and Jourdan Dunn with the title.

Tui profits take off despite heatwave pressure and Middle East conflict

Tui has unveiled higher profits despite citing a 'challenging' backdrop linked to European heatwaves and conflict in the Middle East. The Germany-based tour operator saw first-half profits surpass expectations after solid trading from its cruises and experiences operations made up for a 2 per cent decline in summer bookings within its markets and airlines business Group revenue increased by 7.1 per cent to £5.4billion for the second quarter, amid growth in both volumes and prices. The update came a day after the group upgraded its annual financial forecasts as it flagged the success of its recent growth strategy. Tui blamed its summer booking decline on 'the impact of the June and July heatwaves in our source markets, as well as the Middle East conflict'. The company noted particular weakness among German consumers and in bookings for US destinations. In the previous quarter, TUI had flagged a slight drop in summer bookings, amid concerns that inflation and economic worries could weaken travel demand. European travellers, the core base of TUI's customers, tend to be more price-sensitive than North American travellers. Tui flagged a 'positive start' to bookings for the winter season. It enjoyed record underlying earnings for the quarter to 30 June, rising to £278million from £201million a year earlier. This was supported by a 56.2 per cent increase in earnings from its cruises arm, which was buoyed by the launch of two new cruise ships and strong trading conditions. Earnings in its Tui Musement activities and experiences business jumped 6.8 per cent during the quarter. Shares in the airline and tour operator rose on Wednesday and have increased by more than 40 per cent in the past year. The company said total underlying earnings were on track to grow by between 9 and 11 per cent this year. It previously forecast growth of between 7 and 10 per cent. Tui Group chief executive Sebastian Ebel said: 'The third quarter and the first nine months of the financial year 2025 were strong. Our strategy is paying off. 'We are benefiting from our integrated and diversified business model and managed to reduce the group's seasonality further. 'All this in a continuing challenging environment for our markets and airlines segment with economic difficulties in Europe, Europe-wide heat waves in the summer and the conflict in the Middle East.' Last year, Tui abandoned London's stock market for Germany. Shareholders approached the travel operator about delisting from the London Stock Exchange and upgrading to a premium listing in Germany. Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor, said: 'It looks like the summer performance so far has held up much better than anticipated. 'Last quarter Tui warned about a potential drop in summer bookings amid the macro uncertainty and European heatwaves. 'However this week, that sense of nervousness has reversed course with a guidance uplift for the full-year and a top and bottom line beat. 'Hotels and resorts, and cruises were a bright spot for Tui, while airlines remain challenging. 'Tui's CEO Sebastian Ebel said there is a decline in US business with customers travelling to Canada, Africa and Asia instead. He also said the Middle East conflict hurt business significantly.'
