Cricket-Dawson back in England team after eight-year absence for fourth test v India
(Reuters) -England's Liam Dawson has been named in the team to play India in the fourth test of the series at Old Trafford, England's cricket board (ECB) announced on Monday, marking the spinner's first test appearance in eight years.
The 35-year-old Hampshire left-armer, who replaces the injured Shoaib Bashir, is the only change to the team for the fourth test which begins on Wednesday. Dawson has not played a test match since earning his third test cap in July 2017.
Dawson, an unused member of the 2019 World Cup winning squad, did feature in the Twenty20 series against West Indies in June.
Bashir suffered a fracture to his finger during the third test at Lord's, which England won by 22 runs to take a 2-1 lead, leaving them one victory away from clinching their first five-match series win since 2018.

The decisive moment came in the third set, when Mboko took a 3-1 lead after saving four break points in a pivotal fourth game that gave her a firm grip on the match as she went on to claim the title after two hours and four minutes of play. "I want to thank Naomi from an incredible match. I've always looked up to her when I was very little. It's always great to play with such an amazing player like you," Mboko said. "I couldn't be more grateful," she added. Mboko, currently ranked 85th in the world, became the first Canadian to defeat three former Grand Slam champions in a single WTA event in the Open Era, with victories over Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina. For Osaka, who was attempting to revive her career after an inconsistent period following her return from maternity leave, the defeat brought her groundbreaking tournament to an end. England stars dominate women's Ballon d'Or nominations
PARIS, Aug 8 — Five of England's Euro 2025-winning squad were nominated for the women's Ballon d'Or award on Thursday. Captain Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton all made the 30-player list after England successfully defended their title in Switzerland. England beat world champions Spain on penalities in the final last month and both countries have five players on the list. Chelsea full-back Bronze, 33, was a Ballon d'Or runner-up in 2019. Arsenal Michelle Agyemang, 19, has been nominated for the Women's Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best women's footballer under 21 after she was named the young player of the tournament at Euro 2025. Manchester United seal €85m deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko
MANCHESTER, Aug 8 — Manchester United have agreed a deal worth up to 85 million euros (US$99 million, £74 million) to sign striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig on Thursday, according to multiple reports in England. The BBC, Athletic and Sky Sports reported United will pay an initial 76.5 million euros for the 22-year-old with a further 8.5 million euros due in add-ons. Newcastle were also interested in signing the Slovenian, possibly to replace wantaway star Alexander Isak, a target for Liverpool. However, Sesko has been wooed by the enduring stature of the 20-time English champions despite a lack of European football in the coming season. His arrival will complete an overhaul of the Red Devils' blunt attack. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were signed earlier in the window, taking United's total spend on forwards in recent months to over £200 million. Sesko had also previously been linked with Arsenal after impressing during his two-year spell in Germany, where he scored 39 times in 87 appearances for Leipzig, including 21 last season. Standing 1.95 metres (6ft 4ins) tall, Sesko's towering physique, electric pace and eye for goal have earned comparisons with Manchester City's Erling Haaland. Like Haaland, he also made his name at RB Salzburg before moving to Germany in 2023. United are banking on Sesko realising his abundant potential to fire them back into contention at the top of the Premier League table.
