Sarawak explores smart utilities, space tech in China working visit
KUCHING (July 15): The Sarawak government, through the state Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, is embarking on a series of technical working visits to China to explore international best practices and advanced technologies in the fields of water supply, electricity supply, telecommunications, and the space industry.
Led by its minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, the visit spans from July 14 to 18 and covers the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hainan.
'We look forward to exploring potential partnerships with relevant agencies or companies in Guangzhou, particularly in areas such as capacity building, joint pilot projects, and the adoption of advanced technologies,' Julaihi said in a statement yesterday.
The delegation's itinerary includes site visits to key infrastructure and high-technology facilities, such as the Nansha Huangge Smart Water Treatment Plant, Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Station, Wenchang International Aerospace City, and the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
Collaborative meetings with government leaders and department heads across the three cities are also scheduled.
As part of the visit, the delegation has successfully conducted site inspections at key facilities in Guangzhou, including the 'Guangzhou Nansha Nanyue Water: Huangge Water Treatment Plant Phase II – Yuehai Kerong Smart Water' and 'Guangzhou Lijiao Sewerage Water Treatment Plant', two of the nation's foremost examples of advanced water treatment and smart water management.
'The visits provided valuable opportunities to study how smart systems, automation, and integrated designs contribute to sustainable and efficient urban water services,' added Julaihi.
'These engagements reflect the ministry's commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in delivering world-class utility services across Sarawak.'

He said the collaboration was formalised during his official working visit to Jakarta on Tuesday, where he accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation. Highlighting the significance of the cross-border cooperation, Abang Johari stressed the need for Sarawakian engineers to work closely with their Indonesian counterparts. 'Sarawak needs more engineers there to collaborate with engineers from Indonesia. This means we will be working beyond Sarawak's borders,' he said during the launch of the Special Financial Aid (BKK) for Sarawakian tertiary students in Kuala Lumpur today. He also revealed that Japanese firm Sumitomo has expressed strong interest in participating in Sarawak's hydrogen energy industry. Julaihi: Sarawak to press on with master plan for 100 pct water coverage by 2030

DARO (July 30): Sarawak will press on with its ambitious Water Supply Master Plan to ensure 100 per cent water coverage across the state by 2030, said Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi today. The Minister for Utility and Telecommunication said the master plan, completed in 2021 and coordinated by the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU), lays the foundation for a long-term solution to water supply challenges, particularly in rural areas. 'The Water Supply Master Plan outlines Sarawak's water development up to 2070, with three strategic thrusts – water demand management, treatment and distribution, and the quality and adequacy of both raw and treated water,' he said at the launch of the Daro Acute System project in Mukah. The plan includes the creation of an integrated water grid system linking all major treatment plants across Sarawak, while off-grid solutions such as the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply System (Sawas) will serve remote communities. Julaihi said the government has allocated RM4.6 billion under Alternative Funding and the 12th Malaysia Plan to implement 406 water projects statewide. As of now, 292 projects have been completed, 77 are in pre-contract stages, and the remainder are in various phases of implementation. He highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) through an RM1.1 billion pipe replacement programme covering 2,742km across Sarawak. In Mukah, RM10.4 million has been approved for 11 pipe replacement projects spanning 29.9km from 2024 to 2025, he said. 'The Premier of Sarawak has shown strong commitment to improving water supply, especially for rural areas,' Julaihi stressed, adding that he personally monitors project progress on the ground to ensure timely completion. The Daro Acute System project serves as a short-term solution to enhance local water supply until the full grid system is operational. Julaihi also urged the public to report vandalism of utility assets, warning that such acts cause not only financial losses but also disrupt the daily lives of residents. 'With continuous efforts and the support of all stakeholders, we can realize Sarawak's vision of a modern, efficient, and sustainable water supply system,' he said. Sibu's RM291m water treatment upgrade 8.85pc ahead of schedule, set to double regional water capacity, says Sarawak minister
SIBU, July 30 — The Salim Water Treatment Plant (WTP) upgrading project here is progressing smoothly, with 8.85 per cent advancement ahead of original schedule, said Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi. Implemented by Sibu Water Board (SWB), the project has reached 25.48 per cent physical progress compared to the original target of 16.63 per cent. 'Based on my observation of the works at the site today, I am pleased that everything is progressing smoothly. 'This is a very good sign, reflecting the extraordinary efforts by all parties involved,' he told reporters during a site visit here yesterday. The project, which costs RM291.4 million (with the main contract valued at RM269.1 million), aims to double the water production capacity of the Salim plant from 150 million litres per day (MLD) to 300 MLD. Julaihi said once completed, Sibu's total water supply capacity ― including the Bukit Lima Plant (45 MLD) will reach 345 MLD, providing a healthy reserve margin not just for Sibu but also surrounding areas. 'This upgrade will meet the increasing demand for clean water in Sibu and nearby regions,' he said. He noted that 120 workers are currently involved in the on-site works to ensure the project remains on track. Julaihi also expressed appreciation to SWB, project engineers and all stakeholders involved in the project's implementation.
