Ensure fairness, union urges Petronas ahead of job cuts
PETALING JAYA : The Petronas workers' union has urged the company to ensure transparency and fairness as it seeks to reduce its workforce by 10% in a company-wide restructuring exercise.
The Sarawak branch of the union said the layoffs would naturally affect the livelihoods of workers, especially those stationed in Bintulu and Miri, as the cost of living is rising in those two areas specifically.
'The oil and gas industry's workforce faces a challenging environment, with long hours, remote deployments, and job instability,' the union said in a statement.
'Concerns about wage inequalities between local and international employees, as well as growing living costs, add to the financial and emotional strain on workers,' it said, according to Dayak Daily.
The union said it will seek to protect the rights and welfare of the over 2,000 workers it represents by advocating for reskilling and equitable compensation for affected employees.
On Thursday, Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said the restructuring exercise was aimed at reducing costs due to falling crude prices.
He said Petronas expects to reduce its headcount by more than 5,000 people and freeze hiring until December 2026.
Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof later said Petronas's restructuring exercise was due to global challenges and was not linked to its dispute with Sarawak's state-owned gas aggregator, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd.

Felcra records RM178m profit, with RM101m payout to participants starting today, says Zahid
PASIR SALAK, Aug 17 — Felcra Bhd has recorded a profit of RM178 million for up to April 2025, showing an increase compared to the previous year. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, stated that of this amount, RM101 million will be distributed to 74,300 participants nationwide in stages starting today. In addition, Ahmad Zahid said Felcra Bhd continues to make history in strengthening national food security through the commercialisation of Felcra's MRQ 107 paddy – a local fragrant rice variety that serves as a high-quality alternative to imported fragrant rice. He stated that the Seberang Perak area, covering more than 3,400 hectares and cultivated using modern methods by Felcra, has shown encouraging performance with an average yield reaching eight metric tonnes per hectare annually. 'We expect production to exceed 27,000 metric tonnes of paddy, equivalent to over 16,000 metric tons of rice per year, which can meet the needs of thousands of families. Hopefully, this becomes an example for other paddy farmers,' he said. Meanwhile, Idris said the performance of the first interim distribution for 2025 was influenced by several key factors, including efficient estate management and the implementation of cost-saving measures. 'Through effective approaches in the use of fertilisers, pesticides, and farm inputs, operational costs were reduced by 15 per cent, and yield per hectare increased by 49 per cent,' he said. Idris also informed that Felcra's oil palm projects recorded an average net profit increase of 81 per cent. Help other Penang estate families get houses, says Ramasamy
Urimai chairman P Ramasamy said the Penang government should show kindness to the Indian families who have toiled for generations in estates across the state. PETALING JAYA : The Penang government has been urged to provide homes at a nominal price to former estate workers and those displaced from other estates. Urimai chairman P Ramasamy praised the state government for honouring its pledge to provide free housing to the 23 families in Ladang Sungai Kechil in Nibong Tebal, but said the state should also show kindness to other Indian families who have 'toiled for generations' in estates across Penang. He said chief minister Chow Kon Yeow was well aware of the plight of former plantation workers in the state. 'Let not overzealous, pro-capitalist elements in the administration prioritise profit over the welfare and dignity of the workers,' he said in a Facebook post. 'If the former Caledonia estate workers were able to purchase low-cost terrace houses for as little as RM10, I fail to see why the same principle cannot be applied to Ladang Sungai Kechil.' Earlier today, Chow said the state government will provide houses in a state-backed development project to 23 families at the Sungai Kechil estate who were facing eviction. Each family will receive a three-bedroom single-storey terrace house of 750 sq ft with parking space in front. In 2019, Penang Chief Minister Inc signed a deal with the Eco World group to build 272 single-storey, low-cost homes and amenities for the families of workers living as squatters in Caledonia estate.

Durian stall run by Malay, Chinese and Indian friends becomes symbol of unity in Batu Pahat
BATU PAHAT, Aug 17 — Just like durian flesh neatly packed within its thorny husk, the friendship of three men from different races has remained strong, with the 'king of fruits' not only serving as their livelihood but also as a symbol of unity. About a decade ago, Mohd Nasir Majnun, 43, Chew Pei Chuan, 42, and S. Lognathan, 35, worked together as car repossessors before each tried running their own durian stalls in separate locations. But as their stalls were quite close to one another, it became difficult to attract customers. 'That situation led us to sit down and agree to set up a joint venture under the name 'Rumah Buah'. Alhamdulillah, it turned out to be a blessing as our stall has since become a favourite spot for customers of all races. 'Many praised our effort, saying it serves as a good example of unity,' Mohd Nasir told Bernama at their shop in Jalan Chengal, Taman Batu Pahat, recently. Chew said their decision to join forces has since attracted customers from across Malaysia and abroad. 'Before this, only locals bought from me. Now, we have customers from Singapore, Thailand and even China. They want to taste Musang King and see for themselves how we work together. 'Our story went viral during the Movement Control Order, when we sold durians online and personally delivered them to customers,' he said, adding that they now sell up to three tonnes of durians daily, including Musang King, kampung, kahwin, IOI, Black Thorn and D13 varieties. Meanwhile, Lognathan said their cooperation continues beyond the durian season, as they also sell other local fruits such as pineapples and dragon fruit sourced from nearby farmers, as well as fresh coconut water. 'We also carry out charitable activities, especially during festive seasons, by sharing part of our earnings with the underprivileged. 'Every Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Deepavali, we make sure to contribute to those in need,' said Lognathan, fondly known as Uda among his friends.
