Indian surfers get two more quotas for 2026 Asian Games
India now has four quotas — two men, two women — for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan where surfing is set to make its debut. The country had already clinched two slots at the 2024 ASC held in the Maldives.
'Five years ago, India was absent from the Asian surfing rankings. Today, we are competing shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the continent. Our journey continues with a clear goal: make a strong mark at the Asian Games in Japan,' said Arun Vasu, president, Surfing Federation of India, at the closing ceremony.
India's ASC 2025 campaign was headlined by Ramesh Budihal, who secured a bronze in the men's open, the first individual medal for the country at the continental stage. Three Indians made it to the quarterfinals for the first time, and two reached the semifinals — Budihal and Kishore Kumar.
India (1785) finished third in the men's open team rankings, behind Indonesia (1980) and South Korea (1800). The women's open podium had Japan (1860) on top, followed by Indonesia (1670) and Thailand (1608). The host finished eighth (1200).
The medal winners of all categories, including boys' under-18 and girls' under-18, were felicitated.

FC Goa on Wednesday beat Oman champions Al-Seeb 2-1 in their one-match AFC Champions League 2 preliminary stage to go through to the group stage of the continental tournament. The result comes amid crippling uncertainty for Goa and other clubs playing in the Indian Super League (ISL) with the league's existence up in the air. It is also a bit of a redemption for head coach Manolo Marquez, for whom this was the first competitive match since his rather forgettable tenure as India's head coach ended. Dejan Dražić and Javier Siverio scored for FC Goa as they managed to keep out some spirited attacks from Al-Seeb towards the end of both the halves. Goa will now discover their group stage opponents on Friday. Marquez had said before the match that he doesn't have any thoughts of redemption in mind and that this night was all about the club's mission to make it to the group stage of the Champions League 2, which is the second tier continental competition for Asian teams. India will be hence be represented by two clubs in the tournament this season, with Mohun Bagan Super Giant having already qualified for the group stage after winning the ISL last season. Goa had qualified for the preliminary stage after winning the Super Cup. Al Seeb started aggressively, with Nasser Al Rawahi forcing defender Pol Moreno into an acrobatic clearance in just the second minute of the match. Zahir Al Aghbari's follow-up from inside the box was blocked. Goa didn't take long to take the attack to the opposition though, with Drazic breaking free on the left in the ninth but but with only the keeper to beat, the midfielder's soft shot was easily collected by Ahmed Al Rawahi. Al Rawahi was in the thick of things again for Al Seeb in the 23rd minute when his timely tackle opened up space to set up Abdul Aziz Al Muqbali, whose curling effort was parried away by FC Goa keeper Hrithik Tiwari. The Al Seeb goalkeeper, however, was found wanting more often than not in crucial moments, which ultimately costed the Oman champions a place in the ACL 2. Goa took the lead when Borja Herrera's instinctive long pass found Dražic on the left. The midfielder evaded Al Rawahi's challenge before delicately chipping the ball over Ahmed Al Khamisi and into the back of the net. Goa sat further and further back into their own half as the first 45 minutes progressed and were probably a little relieved to hear the half-time whistle. Al-Seeb were especially miffed as a penalty that they had received in the dying stages of the first half was overturned when the linesman told the referee that the hand ball, which triggered the decision had happened outside the box. Replays indicated that this may have been an erroneous call. The ISL side were dominant in the opening minutes of the second half and they eventually had a goal to show. Herrera's cross off a corner floated into the box perfectly for Siverio to rise above Al Rawahi for a headed finish. Al Seeb, the 2022 AFC Cup winners, reduced the deficit at the hour mark through Nasser Al Rawahi's strike from close range off Ali Al Busaidi's cutback, but that was to be it as FC Goa became the second Indian side to book their spot in this season's Group Stage after 2024-25 ISL Shield Winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Visakhapatnam girls excel in roller skating, sharing their inspiring journey to success
Two schoolgirls from Visakhapatnam, D Greeshma and Sivakoti Kshetra, brought home gold and silver at the recently concluded Asian Roller Skating Championship held in South Korea. Greeshma won gold in the senior small show group event, while Kshetra took silver in her category. For Greeshma, a class XII student of Visakha Valley School, artistic skating began as a hobby when she was just four years old. Over the years, the sport grew into a serious pursuit. 'Roller sports demand focus and consistent practice,' she says. 'It's about balancing both the body and mind. It improves stamina, concentration and teaches you to stay grounded under pressure.' Her recent win, she says, was the result of rigorous preparation. 'During our official practice session in South Korea, we realised we were performing better than the other teams. That gave us confidence going into the event.' But her journey at the championship wasn't without setbacks. Just before her solo performance, she suffered a fall and was taken to the hospital. 'Luckily, the injury wasn't severe,' recalls her mother, Sharmila. 'She went back and performed despite falling again during the routine. I thought she wouldn't be able to continue, but she completed the event.' Greeshma finished sixth in the solo category. She credits her coaches, P Satyanarayana and Chitti Babu, for shaping her technique and helping her stay prepared for international competitions. 'They have played a big role in my journey. From correcting posture to training for stamina and mental strength, they've been closely involved throughout.' Greeshma's regular training takes place every evening from 6.30pm to 9pm. However, in the lead-up to international events, she attends national conditioning camps that typically last 15 days each, held in different cities across India. 'We usually attend three to five camps before every international championship. These focus on physical endurance, mental conditioning and improving our technical performance.' Representing India, she says, carries a sense of pride. 'To represent the country at any international event is a big honour. But representing India at the Asian Games has been the best moment of my life so far,' says Greeshma. In the same championship, 14-year-old Sivakoti Kshetra, a student of Little Angels School, won a silver medal. Her daily schedule is built around discipline and long training hours. On regular days, she begins her day at 5am, studies until 7am and heads to school, which has supported her sporting dreams by giving her flexibility and encouragement. After school, she studies for an hour, then begins her first skating session at home followed by formal coaching from 7pm to 9pm. During competitions, her schedule changes completely. She trains early morning for three hours before heading to school. Her second training session is in the afternoon, followed by the third at night. Her interest in skating started at the age of four, when her parents, noticing delayed speech and hyperkinetic behavior, began taking her to the rink with her elder sister. 'We thought the sport might help her improve mentally and physically,' says her father Dr S Murali Krishna. 'It turned out to be transformative.' Kshetra has since won 72 medals, including 21 national and two Asian medals. Her first international medal came from China in 2023; South Korea is her second. She has been part of the Sea Cadet Corps for four years now, where she trains with the Indian Navy every Sunday. Both Greeshma and Kshetra train at Shivaji Park Skating Rink under the same coaches, P Satyanarayana and Chitti Babu. For the girls, the focus, however, was never on medals at the start. 'We didn't have a sports background nor a goal for them to represent India,' says Kshetra's father. 'We only wanted them to stay active and focused.'
