Rugged and stylish: The Ford Wildtrak X
Ford continues to have massive success in South Africa in terms of car sales. In June, it sold over 3 000 vehicles and the Ranger made up 2 318 of those sales.
Whether it is the 4×2 or 4×4 Ranger, South Africans love these bakkies. In fact, I'm sure we've all been in a position where a Ford Ranger has tailed our backside and forced us to move into a slower lane on the highway.
I had the privilege of being one of those guys for a week. The Ford Ranger Wildtrak X arrived in my driveway with its striking looks, capable roof rails and subtle, but essential, cyber-orange accent under the grille.
It is by far the most stylish Ranger of all. There's just something about a Wildtrak that gives it a distinctive identity. It could be the black lettering across the front and back or the black oval Ford badges — or even the aluminium side steps.
It gives off a very stylish, but rugged, look that makes it feel like more than a bakkie or a workhorse.
That's just the exterior.
The interior adds to it. There are elements, like the suede material that adorns the glovebox, instrument cluster hood and door trim, that emphasises that the car is not afraid to get dirty and reiterates the ruggedness of the vehicle.
You even have a built-in 400W/240v inverter which can be accessed from the rear of the centre console, as well as from the auxiliary power points in the load compartment. You could essentially connect your toaster if you were ever out camping.
But, on the other hand, the very attractive portrait-oriented 12-inch touchscreen, the comfortable leather seats that embrace the cyber-orange stitching and features such as wireless charging bring a sense of refinement into the cabin.
You don't need to drive the vehicle to actually know what it's about. But when you do drive it, it just confirms that feeling.
The Ranger Wildtrak X is powered by a 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine that produces 154kW of power and 500Nm of torque, which is paired to a surprisingly smooth 10-speed automatic gearbox.
It is the first Ranger 2.0L Bi-Turbo model to be available with Ford's on-demand four-wheel drive system that offers four modes. It can be driven in 4A (automatic) on high-traction surfaces, with the system continuously distributing power between the front and rear axles for optimum performance in all on-road conditions. The driver can also select 2H for on-road driving, as well as four-wheel drive high-range (4H) and low-range (4L) for more challenging off-road terrain.
I love being behind the wheel of the big, rugged bakkies but sometimes that means sacrificing a refined driving experience.
Nobody doubts the off-road capabilities of the vehicle but the Ranger Wildtrak X surprised me when it came to riding on the tarmac.
The gearshifts were as smooth as butter when picking up speed, the turbolag was not as bad as it usually is on a bakkie and the roads didn't feel bumpy at all.
In fact, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were driving a Ford Everest when you are in the Wildtrak X. It brings that sort of refinement to the driving experience but can still tackle off-road conditions with ease.
It was a pleasure to drive a total of 200km in it on a trip from Springs to Pretoria and back.
The car handled the bendy highways with ease. No bumps, no bruises and certainly no perception of bulkiness for a car that weighs over 2.3 tonnes.
Even the backseat passengers were comfortable with the amount of headroom and legroom that they were offered.
Safety
The Wildtrak X raises the bar in terms of safety compared to the normal Wildtrak.
It has a 30mm wider stance to provide an even more stable footprint off-road, while ground clearance has risen by 26mm, helping owners to negotiate more challenging terrain with confidence.
The Wildtrak X features seven driving modes that cover everyday and off-road driving (Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl), and comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance and safety systems. These include active park assist; blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and braking; adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centring; lane departure warning and a 360-degree camera as standard.
It also comes with trail assist and trail control.
Trail assist negotiates tight bends on narrow tracks by applying the brake on the inside rear wheel which reduces the turning radius by up to 25%, while Trail Control helps drivers maintain constant low speed while driving off-road. The driver simply selects a set speed below 32km/h and the vehicle will manage its acceleration and braking while the driver concentrates on steering through difficult terrain.
Verdict and pricing
Overall, the Wildtrak X strikes that balance between ruggedness and refinement perfectly.
It also is positioned perfectly as the highest-spec model before the two V6 variants, the Platinum and the Raptor.
But, it does come in at over R1 million. If it's the style that you are after, then R1 070 500 will get you the Wildtrak X, but if you are a power hunter, then add the R80 000 and go for the V6 Platinum variant.

The Ranger then crashed into another bakkie parked in front of the centre. The Ranger and the Kia both came to a stop in the parking lot of Lydenburg Medical Centre. The signage board at the entrance was completely demolished. The drivers of both the Ranger and the Kia were immediately assisted for injuries sustained at the centre itself. According to information received, the driver of the Ranger works at McGee Ford. The two injured parties were still being treated at the time of publication. An update will be provided once more information becomes available.

Image: Leaked image There is a great deal of anticipation surrounding the new-generation Toyota Hilux, and it is coming closer to fruition, with recent spy shots as well as leaked brochure pages and patent images all giving us a good idea of what to expect. Numerous sources abroad suggest the new bakkie could be unveiled internationally before the end of 2025, and although its local introduction remains unconfirmed, there is a good chance that we'll see it before the end of 2026. What appear to be legitimate patent images have leaked onto the internet courtesy of Cars_Secrets on Instagram, correlating with recent brochure scans and spy shots of disguised prototypes. However, these all suggest that the 2026 Hilux is more of a comprehensive update than an all-new model. The use of the current model's doors and roof structure suggests that the new Hilux is based on a modified version of the current IMV underpinnings, which date back to 2004. The current shape has been around internationally since 2015. Earlier reports had suggested that it would move to the more modern TNGA-F architecture, which underpins its American cousin, the Tacoma, as well as the latest Land Cruiser 300 and Prado SUVs. While its shape remains familiar, Toyota has completely redesigned the front and rear ends, with slim new headlights making an appearance alongside a more rectangular grille. At the back, we see fresh taillights, featuring a more angular shape and 3D-style LED light clusters. The leaked patent images reveal a completely redesigned interior, however, replacing the current bakkie's dated fascia with an all-new cockpit layout that closely mimics the latest Prado's interior. Image: Leaked image To that end we see a larger central screen that 'floats' above lower-positioned central air vents, while the separate instrument cluster is likely to be digital. Also evident is an all-new centre console, housing a slimmer gear lever and given that we can't see a manual handbrake, it's likely that this has become electronic too. There is no word on what powers the new 2026 Toyota Hilux, but sources abroad suggest it will continue to offer the current 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine as its mainstay, with the 48V mild hybrid versions likely fitted across a wider array of models, and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain has also been rumoured. The current 2.8 GD-6 engine produces 150kW in its standard guise and 165kW in sportier GR-S trim. It's unclear whether Toyota will attempt to extract more power from this engine. For markets such as South Africa, it's almost a given that the smaller 2.4-litre turbodiesel will also soldier on as a more budget-friendly option. However, with the current version producing just 110kW, Toyota may give it a small boost to better compete with more powerful rivals like Ford's 125kW 2.0 SiT in the Ranger. The fleet-focused 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre normally aspirated petrol engines could soldier on too, but on that note, Toyota could well introduce the back-to-basics Hilux Champ, which would likely use the Stallion name locally. It's all a game of speculation for now, but it won't be long until we find out all the juicy details about the upcoming Hilux. But has Toyota made a wrong move by sticking to the current platform, or will sticking to the tried and tested prove to be a winning formula? Only time will tell. IOL Motoring

How SA's new driving licence demerit system will work

On August 1 the government gazetted the legislation for the long-delayed Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) system to be rolled out. The second phase will be implemented on December 1 in 69 municipalities, with the remaining 144 municipalities to follow on April 1 2026. The demerit points system comes into effect countrywide on September 1 2026, designed to ensure that habitual traffic offenders are removed from South Africa's roads. Aarto is the government's plan to replace the criminal system with an administrative one. With Aarto, drivers will be allocated points for offences and face suspension or cancellation of their licences if they accumulate too many, in addition to any penalty fee payable. It is administered by the Road Traffic Infringement Authority (RTIA), a state-owned entity financed from fines and money appropriated by parliament. Aarto decriminalises most traffic violations and subjects them to administrative processes. It does this by categorising road traffic violations as infringements or offences. Infringements (decriminalised violations) are dealt with administratively and offences are dealt with in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act. Here's how it will work: Drivers start with zero points, with different infringements carrying different demerit points depending on severity, up to a maximum of six points. The points are in addition to a penalty fee imposed for the infringement or the requirement to go to court for more serious offences. For initial infringements, drivers will have the option to resolve them within 32 days and benefit from a 50% discount or choose other options such as submitting a representation or paying in instalments. A driver may accumulate up to 15 demerit points without losing their driving privileges. The licence of a driver is suspended for three months for each demerit point above the threshold. One demerit point is deducted for every three months the driver does not incur any additional demerit points. Four points can be reduced on completion of a rehabilitation programme. Driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period is a criminal offence. A conviction can result in a fine or imprisonment for up to one year or both. A driver's licence may be suspended twice in the lifetime of its holder. If the threshold is again exceeded after two suspensions, the driver's licence is cancelled. In the case of a cancelled licence the driver will have to start with a learner's licence once the disqualification period has lapsed. If you receive an infringement notice but were not the driver of the vehicle, you may nominate the driver who committed the infringement. You must nominate a driver in the first 32 days after receiving an infringement notice. This may be done on the website. If you believe there are reasonable grounds for cancelling your infringement notice you may submit a representation on the same website. You can elect to be tried in court when issued with an infringement notice (only for infringement notices with an infringement date up to November 30 2025), when you receive a courtesy letter, or when your representation for an infringement fails. For unsuccessful representation outcomes received for infringement dates from December 1 2025, you approach through an application made to the Appeals Tribunal, an independent body accountable to the department of transport. If your application fails you may lodge an appeal or review application to a magistrate's court. Examples of fines and demerit points allocation • Exceeding speed limit 11km/h-15km/h: R250 and zero points • Exceeding speed limit 16km/h-20km/h: R500 and one point • Exceeding speed limit 21km/h-25km/h: R750 and two points • Exceeding speed limit more than 40km/h: Court and six points • Failing to keep left: R1,000 and three points • Failing to use indicators: R500 and one point • Vehicle not registered or licensed: R1,000 and three points • Vehicle with no number plates: Court and six points • Vehicle with only one number plate: R500 and two points • Driver not licensed: R1,250 and four points • Driver's licence not in vehicle: R1,250 and four points • Disobeying stop sign or robot: R750 and two points • Driving under the influence of alcohol: Court and six points Infringement notices, courtesy letters and enforcement orders An infringement notice is served on an alleged infringer to know they have contravened a traffic law. It can either be issued on the side of the road, via postage or it can be an electronic infringement issued via email. Paying the penalty within 32 days of receiving it qualifies you for a 50% discount. If you fail to act within 32 days, the RTIA issues a courtesy letter. This removes the 50% discount and adds a R100 fee for the courtesy letter. Within 32 days you may pay the full penalty, arrange to pay it in instalments or make a written representation setting out why you are not liable for the infringement. If your representation fails you must pay an additional R200 administrative penalty. If you fail to act within 32 days of the courtesy letter, the RTIA issues an enforcement order that electronically blocks issuing of documents on NaTIS, meaning that no driving licence, professional driving permit or vehicle licence disc may be issued. It also allocates demerit points to your name.
