April 23 South Africa (Scottsville) form analysis

New Paper22-04-2025
Race 1 (1,200m)
A fair debut and experience can see (4) INTENSITY and (8) DARK MATTER go closer. But Dark Matter looks to be the better one, albeit there are a number of eye-catching first-timers.
(11) STAR IN MOTION and (10) YIPPEE KIYAY are two that may be worth following in the market.
Race 2 (1,200m)
(1) LIMITLESS SKY has improved and has gone well over this course and distance.
(4) KALI BWANA was second behind impressive winner Keukenhof last time.
(7) KAPTURE THE PEACE and (8) EDUCATOR could prove to be the best of the debutantes.
Race 3 (1,000m)
(2) UN BEL DI comes with smart Cape form over the distance.
(5) MOJO MAN won well last time. He gets a 4kg claimer aboard and can go in again.
(1) KALAHARI ROLLER ran fourth to Mojo Man last time and his last win was over this course and distance.
(3) TWENTY ONE MAY is 0.5kg better off than Mojo Man, taking the apprentice allowance into consideration, but is in good form over the trip and can turn the tables.
Race 4 (1,600m)
(9) DANCING ON A CLOUD was an impressive maiden winner last time. He faces stronger rivals but is capable of improving further.
(12) TERMINATOR has a wide draw to contend with but his last win was over the course and distance. Expect a bold showing from him.
(1) DAPPER is running over a more suitable trip and has the best draw.
(10) THE WOLF won a good race on the Poly last run and stays the trip. The form can hold up.
Race 5 (1,600m)
(1) ICY BLAST has tumbled down the handicap when contesting sprints. Last time, he was drawn widest and now jumps from a more favourable gate.
(7) SUNDANCE KID went close last time. The form has been franked in feature company, so a repeat should see him in the firing line.
(5) JP'S PALACE's last win was on this course and he is progressive.
(4) PLAZA ACCORD is unbeaten in two runs since returning from a lengthy break.
Race 6 (1,200m)
(2) KHETHIWE'S DESTINY is smart and has her third run after a lengthy break. She could prove too classy for her male rivals.
(5) RIVERSTONE comes with solid Cape form over the trip. If fit and well, he will make his presence felt.
(4) AGRADO won well last time. He took a six-point rise in the handicap but can benefit from Rachel Venniker's allowance.
(1) MEXICAN PETE improved last time and can surprise.
Race 7 (1,200m)
(2) REAL WAR won at long odds last start. However, he is a progressive youngster and only got a three-point raise in the handicap.
He beat (8) GORGEOUS GUY by the barest of margins and is now 1.5kg better off at the weights.
(6) WISSA'S ON FIRE will be a big contender.
(9) NOW I GOT YOU may still be under the handicappers' radar and has a light weight.
Race 8 (1,200m)
(4) GETOFFOFMYCLOUD came from the clouds to shed her maiden last time. She can follow up.
(10) DAFNES DAUGHTER has been disappointing at her last two runs but can do better.
(7) MIA'S ATHENA has her second run after a lengthy break. She could surprise at best.
(1) MAMAS BABY does seem to run best on the Poly but can improve on her last run.

Real Madrid's Alonso learns harsh lessons as LaLiga debut looms

But Alonso's honeymoon period came to a jarring halt with a 4-0 thrashing by Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup semi-finals, leaving him scrambling to fix tactical blunders while figuring out how to stop Barcelona's attacking juggernaut ahead of their LaLiga opener at home to Osasuna on August 19. The new coach had enjoyed a promising start to his tenure, taking his team unbeaten to the semis despite missing striker Kylian Mbappe for most of the tournament due to illness. But the Spaniard's decision to abandon the five-man defence that had served Real so well until that point in the tournament proved disastrous against PSG's lethal transitions. The tactical switch - made to accommodate a recovered Mbappe alongside academy sensation Gonzalo up front - left Real totally exposed and taught Alonso a painful lesson less than a month after the 43-year-old was welcomed to Madrid. Alonso initially impressed by fielding a five-man defence for the first time in over 25 years at Real, evoking memories of Vicente del Bosque's 2000 Champions League-winning side. The system, featuring three centre backs and aggressive wing backs, marked a significant departure from the traditional 4-3-3 formation and appeared to address Real's defensive frailties from a disappointing, trophyless 2024-25 campaign. Singapore Senior Gentlemen's Circus debuts to engage older men to stay active Fixing those defensive problems was crucial after Real conceded 16 goals in four consecutive losses to Barca. Now Alonso must decide whether to revert to the system that worked before the PSG debacle and during his Leverkusen stint, when he guided them to a first Bundesliga title in 2023-24. He will have new weapons at his disposal, including Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and 20-year-old Spain centre-back Dean Huijsen, who arrived from Bournemouth after Real activated his 50 million pounds ($67.02 million) release clause. The club also signed Spanish left-back Alvaro Carrera from Benfica for 50 million euros ($58.20 million). Another conundrum comes in attack, where Mbappe and Vinicius Jr have still to show their true potential playing together. Academy forward Gonzalo, meanwhile, has gone from unknown to fan favourite during his remarkable Club World Cup showing, potentially displacing established, multi-million euro signings like Rodrygo, Endrick and Brahim Diaz. Keeping all of his players happy will be a challenge for Alonso, as well as figuring out how to live without England maestro Jude Bellingham, who is expected to miss several weeks after surgery in mid-July on a long-standing shoulder issue. Reinforced Real aim to dethrone Barca and their attacking juggernaut

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox MADRID - Barcelona were unstoppable last season, winning a remarkable LaLiga and Copa del Rey double with 174 goals in 60 matches, but this term they face a very different Real Madrid side promising a tactical revolution under new coach Xabi Alonso. Inspired by teenage phenomenon Lamine Yamal, Hansi Flick's Barca dominated Spanish football in the German's first season, including scoring 16 goals in four consecutive wins over Real. They have added loanee Marcus Rashford to a loaded attack featuring Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Dani Olmo. But defensive frailties exposed in the Champions League semi-final extra-time loss to Inter Milan are a question mark. They start the season with new goalkeeper Joan Garcia, whose signing from city rivals Espanyol has created a major feud with veteran Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who had been stripped of the captaincy amid disciplinary proceedings over his injury status. Alonso has new weapons at his disposal to challenge the champions, including full back Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and 20-year-old Netherlands-born Spain centre-back Dean Huijsen, who arrived from Bournemouth after Real activated his 50 million pounds ($67.15 million) release clause. The club also signed Spanish left-back Alvaro Carrera from Benfica for 50 million euros, wrapping up some much needed defensive additions following a trophy-less campaign under Carlo Ancelotti before he left for the Brazil job. The new Real manager must also address attacking issues, with Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr still having to show their true potential playing together, while academy forward Gonzalo's Club World Cup emergence adds more pieces to a puzzle involving Rodrygo, Endrick and Brahim Diaz who all expect playing time. Atletico Madrid begin the season looking to end a four-year trophy drought with club great Diego Simeone under pressure like never before during his 13-year reign. They have added Spain's Alex Baena for 50 million euros and Argentina sensation Thiago Almada from Copa Libertadores champions Botafogo to a stellar squad featuring Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann, Conor Gallagher and Jan Oblak. The season begins on Friday August 15 with Girona hosting Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal welcoming Real Oviedo, while Barcelona visit Mallorca the following day. Atletico travel to Espanyol on August 17, while Real host Osasuna on August 19. REUTERS

Real Madrid's request to postpone LaLiga opener denied, report says

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Real Madrid will begin their LaLiga campaign with a home game against Osasuna as scheduled after Spain's federation (RFEF) rejected their appeal to postpone the August 19 fixture on Thursday, local media reported. Real had requested a longer rest period and pre-season after playing in the Club World Cup in the U.S., where they lost to Paris St Germain in the semi-finals on July 9, according to the report. Reuters has contacted the RFEF and Real for comment. An RFEF judge ruled that in order to preserve the integrity of the competition only a case of force majeure would warrant a change to the official calendar, and that Real's case did not justify an alteration, Europa Press news agency reported. "Finally, it should be added that although the requesting club claims to have the agreement of the opposing party, CA Osasuna, there is no record of this entity having responded to the request made by this judge," the sole judge was quoted as saying in his ruling by the Europa Press.
