Evidence Grows That Dark Energy Changes Over Time

Last year, we reported on an exciting hint of new physics in the first data analysis results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI)—namely that the dark energy, rather than being constant, might vary over time. Granted, those hints were still below the necessary threshold to claim discovery and hence fell under the rubric of 'huge, if true.'
But now we have more data from DESI, combined with other datasets, and those hints have gotten significantly stronger—so much so that Mustapha Ishak-Boushaki of the University of Texas at Dallas, who co-chairs one of the DESI working groups, said that 'we are getting to the point of no return' for confirming dynamical dark energy. Ishak-Boushaki and several other DESI team members presented their results at the American Physical Society's Global Physics Summit today in Anaheim, California. Several relevant papers have also been posted to the physics arXiv.

Einstein's cosmological constant (lambda) implied the existence of a repulsive form of gravity. Quantum physics holds that even the emptiest vacuum is teeming with energy in the form of 'virtual' particles that wink in and out of existence, flying apart and coming together in an intricate quantum dance. This roiling sea of virtual particles could give rise to dark energy, giving the universe a little extra push so that it can continue accelerating. The problem is that the quantum vacuum contains too much energy: roughly 10120 times too much.
So the universe should be accelerating much faster than it is if the dark energy is, essentially, the cosmological constant. Still, all the observations to date indicate that it's constant. The best theoretical fit thus far is known as the Lambda CDM model, which incorporates both a weakly interacting cold dark matter and dark energy. One alternative theory proposes that the universe may be filled with a fluctuating form of dark energy dubbed 'quintessence.' There are also several other alternative models that assume the density of dark energy has varied over the history of the universe.
In its earliest days, the universe was a hot, dense soup of subatomic particles, including hydrogen and helium nuclei, aka baryons. Tiny fluctuations created a rippling pattern through that early ionized plasma, which froze into a three-dimensional place as the universe expanded and cooled. Those ripples, or bubbles, are known as baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). It's possible to use BAOs as a kind of cosmic ruler to investigate the effects of dark energy over the history of the universe. That's what DESI was designed to do: take precise measurements of the apparent size of these bubbles (both near and far) by determining the distances to galaxies and quasars over 11 billion years. That data can then be sliced into chunks to determine how fast the universe was expanding at each point of time in the past, the better to model how dark energy was affecting that expansion. An Upward Trend
Last year's results were based on analysis of a full year's worth of data taken from seven different slices of cosmic time and include 450,000 quasars, the largest ever collected, with a record-setting precision of the most distant epoch (between 8 to 11 billion years back) of 0.82 percent. While there was basic agreement with the Lamba CDM model, when those first-year results were combined with data from other studies (involving the cosmic microwave background radiation and Type Ia supernovae), some subtle differences cropped up.
Essentially, those differences suggested that the dark energy might be getting weaker. In terms of confidence, the results amounted to a 2.6-sigma level for the DESI's data combined with CMB datasets. When adding the supernovae data, those numbers grew to 2.5-sigma, 3.5-sigma, or 3.9-sigma levels, depending on which particular supernova dataset was used.
It's important to combine the DESI data with other independent measurements because 'we want consistency,' said DESI co-spokesperson Will Percival of the University of Waterloo. 'All of the different experiments should give us the same answer to how much matter there is in the universe at present day, how fast the universe is expanding. It's no good if all the experiments agree with the Lambda-CDM model, but then give you different parameters. That just doesn't work. Just saying it's consistent to the Lambda-CDM, that's not enough in itself. It has to be consistent with Lambda-CDM and give you the same parameters for the basic properties of that model.'
These latest results cover the first three years of collected data, spanning almost 15 million galaxies and quasars. Once again, the DESI data alone was consistent with Lambda CDM, i.e., the dark energy is constant. And once again, when combined with other datasets—from CMB, supernovae, and weak gravitational lensing studies—strong hints emerged that dark energy might be changing over time. The confidence level ranges from 2.8 to 4.2 sigma, depending on the combination of datasets—just shy of the five-sigma threshold.
This might strike the average citizen as an incremental advance, but the reality is more complicated. 'The DESI data itself is not incremental,' said Percival. 'We now have three years of data rather than one year of data. That is substantial, not just because of an increased area but because we've increased the overlap. The way we do the survey is we build up plates on the sky, and, after three years rather than one year of operations, we have a lot more of those overlaps filled in. So our data is a lot more complete in the sense that we've gone down to the full depth that we expect to get to in more patches. Consequently, our BAO measurements themselves are a lot better. They're between a factor of two and three better depending on exactly this balance between area versus depth.' Catherine Heymans, astronomer royal of Scotland, told Ars that these new results give scientists much more confidence in DESI's analysis. She was surprised at the excitement over last year's first results, since, 'whenever there's a first data release, the scientific community always takes the results with a pinch of salt,' she said. But DESI made its data public, and other scientists have been making their own analyses over the last year; it has stood up to that close scrutiny.
'The really strong significance for dynamical dark energy comes from the combination of the DESI standard ruler, the BAO plus the supernova data,' she added. 'That's two different ways of measuring the expansion rate of the universe. By combining those two things together, you get this strong detection of dynamical dark energy.'
The next step for the DESI collaboration is to analyze five years' worth of data to see if the upward trend toward the 5-sigma threshold for discovery holds—perhaps even surpassing that threshold, which would be very exciting indeed. That will likely not happen for another two years, per Percival. Should 5 sigma be reached, Heymans said astronomers should expect to see similar results in data from the Euclid Space Telescope, which is slated to do a similar experiment to DESI, at higher redshift, in the near future.
'It opens up a huge range of possibilities,' said Percival of the implications should it be confirmed that dark energy changes over time. 'It will keep theorists happy for many years to come. As a scientist you want to sit a little bit on the fence. But if this is right, this is the next step after the discovery of dark energy. Lambda works. Now, Lambda doesn't work. It means there's a lot more information that's accessible about this process. I think people were worried that everything would show that it just exactly agrees with Lambda. But if there's actually things happening to how the acceleration is changing within detail, that's exciting because we can get a handle on the physics.'
'There's no fundamental underpinning for what could be causing that dynamical dark energy, and that does make me anxious,' said Heymans. 'It's like the observers are throwing the gauntlet back to the theorists. It'd be nice to be able to explain two dark entities with one fell swoop. I am excited about cracks in the cosmological model, because this way is pushing the theoretical community to think outside the box, to think of new ideas. And maybe that will solve the whole dark entity conundrum, which is why we're all here.'

The announcement marks the end of a technology that served as the primary gateway to the web for millions of users throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. AOL confirmed the shutdown date in a help message to customers: "AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. This service will no longer be available in AOL plans." Along with the dial-up service, AOL announced it will retire its AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser on the same date. The dialer software managed the connection process between computers and AOL's network, while Shield was a web browser optimized for slower connections and older operating systems. AOL's dial-up service launched as "America Online" in 1991 as a closed commercial online service, with dial-up roots extending back to Quantum Link for Commodore computers in 1985. However, AOL didn't provide actual internet access yet: The ability to browse the web, access newsgroups, or use services like gopher launched in 1994. Before then, AOL users could only access content hosted on AOL's own servers. When AOL finally opened its gates to the internet in 1994, websites were measured in kilobytes, images were small and compressed, and video was essentially impossible. The AOL service grew alongside the web itself, peaking at over 25 million subscribers in the early 2000s before broadband adoption accelerated its decline. According to 2022 US Census data, approximately 175,000 American households still connect to the internet through dial-up services. These users typically live in rural areas where broadband infrastructure doesn't exist or remains prohibitively expensive to install. For these users, the alternatives are limited. Satellite internet now serves between 2 million and 3 million US subscribers split between various services, offering speeds far exceeding dial-up but often with data caps and higher latency. Traditional broadband through DSL, cable, or fiber-optic connections serves the vast majority of US internet users but requires infrastructure investments that don't always make economic sense in sparsely populated areas. The persistence of dial-up highlights the ongoing digital divide in the United States. While urban users enjoy gigabit fiber connections, some rural residents still rely on the same technology that powered the internet of 1995. Even basic tasks like loading a modern webpage—designed with the assumption of broadband speeds—can take minutes over a dial-up connection, or sometimes it doesn't work at all. The gap between dial-up and modern internet connections is staggering. A typical dial-up connection delivered 0.056 megabits per second, while today's average fiber connection provides 500 Mbps—nearly 9,000 times faster. To put this in perspective, downloading a single high-resolution photo that loads instantly on broadband would take several minutes on dial-up. A movie that streams in real time on Netflix would require days of downloading. But for millions of Americans who lived through the dial-up era, these statistics tell only part of the story. The Sound of the Early Internet For those who came online before broadband, dial-up meant a specific ritual: clicking the dial button, hearing your modem dial a local access number, then listening to the distinctive handshake sequence—a cacophony of static, beeps, and hissing that indicated your computer was negotiating a connection with AOL's servers. Once connected, users paid by the hour or through monthly plans that offered limited hours of access. The technology worked by converting digital data into audio signals that traveled over standard telephone lines, originally designed in the 19th century for voice calls. This meant users couldn't receive phone calls while online, leading to countless family disputes over internet time. The fastest consumer modems topped out at 56 kilobits per second under ideal conditions. AOL didn't invent dial-up internet access, but the company perfected the art of making it accessible to non-technical users. Where competitors required users to understand concepts like PPP settings and TCP/IP configurations, AOL provided a single software package that handled everything. Users just needed to insert one of the billions of CD-ROMs the company mailed out, install the software, and click 'Connect.' The company's cultural impact extended far beyond mere connectivity. AOL Instant Messenger introduced many users to real-time digital communication. Chat rooms created some of the internet's first social networks. The famous "You've Got Mail" notification became so iconic that it was a title for a 1998 romantic comedy. For better or worse, AOL keywords trained a generation to navigate the web through corporate-curated portals rather than open searching. Over the years, Ars Technica documented numerous dial-up developments and disasters that plagued AOL users. In 2015, 83-year-old Ron Dorff received phone bills totaling $24,298.93 after his AOL modem started dialing a long-distance number instead of a local access point—a problem that had plagued users since at least 2002, when New York's attorney general received more than 50 complaints about similar billing disasters. The financial risks weren't limited to technical mishaps: AOL itself contributed to user frustration by repeatedly adjusting its pricing strategy. In 2006, the company raised dial-up rates to $25.90 per month—the same price as broadband—in an attempt to push users toward faster connections. This followed years of subscriber losses that saw AOL's user base fall over time as the company struggled with conflicting strategies that included launching a $10 Netscape-branded service in 2003 while maintaining premium pricing for its main offering. The Infrastructure That Remains AOL's shutdown doesn't mean dial-up is completely dead. Several niche providers like NetZero, Juno, and Dialup 4 Less continue to offer dial-up services, particularly in areas where it remains the only option. In the past, some maintained dial-up connections as a backup connection for emergencies, though many still use it for specific tasks that don't require high bandwidth, like processing credit card payments. The Public Switched Telephone Network that carries dial-up signals still exists, though telephone companies increasingly route calls through modern packet-switched networks rather than traditional circuit-switched systems. As long as traditional phone service exists, dial-up remains technically possible—just increasingly impractical as the web grows more demanding. For AOL, maintaining dial-up service likely became more about serving a dwindling but dependent user base than generating meaningful revenue. The infrastructure requirements, customer support needs, and technical maintenance for such a legacy system eventually outweigh the benefits. The September 30 shutdown date gives remaining dial-up users just over one month now to find alternative internet access—a challenge for those in areas where alternatives don't exist. Some may switch to satellite or cellular services despite higher costs. NASA Rewrites the Rules for Developers of Private Space Stations

Photograph: Vast About five years from now, a modified Dragon spacecraft will begin to fire its Draco thrusters, pushing the International Space Station out of its orbit and sending the largest object humans have built in space inexorably to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. And then what? China's Tiangong Space Station will still be going strong. NASA, however, faces a serious risk of losing its foothold in low-Earth orbit. Space agency leaders have long recognized this and nearly half a decade ago awarded about $500 million to four different companies to begin working on 'commercial' space stations to fill the void. But in that time there has been precious little metal cut, and there are serious concerns about whether any of these replacement stations will be ready to go when the International Space Station falls into the drink. On Monday, in one of his first official tasks, NASA Acting Administrator Sean Duffy signed a new 'directive' on commercial space stations that seeks to address this concern. 'To meet the goals of a commercial system within the proposed budget, a modification to the current approach for LEO platforms is required as specified in the remaining sections of this directive,' states the document, signed by Duffy. To succeed, he wrote, the strategy 'must be altered.' NASA's previous plan involved issuing a 'request for proposals' early next year as part of a competition that would have selected one or, at most, two companies to move forward into assembly and certification of their stations prior to flight. However, according to Duffy's directive, there is up to a $4 billion shortfall in the budget NASA was expected to receive, and what would be needed for this program. The president's budget request included $272.3 million in fiscal year 2026 and $2.1 billion over the next five years for the development and deployment of new commercial space stations. Because of this plan's perceived shortcomings, with the new directive, NASA is making some substantial changes to the Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destinations Program moving forward: Instead of moving forward in Phase 2 with a firm, fixed-price contract for certification and services, NASA will extend the current program of Space Act Agreements awarded to 'multiple' participants. There will be a 'full and open' competition for interested companies to receive Space Act Agreements. NASA will award a minimum of two and preferably three providers within six months of the formal announcement of a proposal. NASA will shift the formal design, acceptance, and certification from this Space Act Agreement phase to a follow-on certification phase (so companies cannot get certified until after they fly). At least 25 percent of milestone funding will be withheld until after a successful in-space crewed demonstration of a space station. There is a new minimum capability NASA seeks, which is significantly less than the original 'full operational capability' the agency sought. Now, the minimum required capability will be '4 crew for 1-month increments.' Changing the Program Completely Some of these are rather big changes. The ongoing reliance on Space Act Agreements, for example, will allow companies more leeway in how they design their stations. Had the agency moved into a more structured contract, known as Federal Acquisition Regulations, NASA could have levied more specific requirements on the companies. This approach of lowering the minimum capabilities will also give companies a better chance to develop operational space stations by 2030, when the International Space Station is expected to be deorbited. Phil McAlister, who directed NASA's Commercial Space Division from 2005 to 2024, which included this commercial space station program, said the changes give NASA and the companies a chance for success, given that the agency's budget will be less than anticipated. 'How was NASA's previous strategy for commercial stations going to work when they lost close to a third of their budget?' McAlister told Ars. 'They had no chance. This gives them a chance.' It is unclear how widely this document was circulated before Duffy signed it on Monday. It appears to have been hastily written. Northrop Grumman, for example, is spelled two different ways. One source told Ars that senior leaders in NASA's space operations division were not made aware of the changes before the directive was distributed. Winners and Losers About five years ago, NASA awarded initial space station development contracts to four different companies: Northrop Grumman, Blue Origin, Axiom Space, and Voyager Space. Since then, Northrop has dropped its effort and joined Voyager's team. There has also been some interest from other companies, most notably Vast, which is working with SpaceX to develop its initial space station. Probably the most striking thing about the new directive is that it seems to favor Vast over NASA's original contractors. Specifically, Vast's Haven-1 module is designed for four astronauts to spend two weeks in orbit, and the company has a more straightforward pathway to building a station that would meet NASA's minimum requirements. The other companies had been planning larger stations that would have more permanence in orbit, which matched NASA's original desires for a successor to the International Space Station. The new directive favors a company building up capabilities through interim steps, including stations with a limited lifespan on orbit. 'All the current players are going to have to do some kind of pivot, at least revisit their current configuration,' McAlister said. 'Certain players are going to have to do a harder pivot.' One industry official, speaking anonymously, put it more bluntly: 'Only Haven-1 can succeed in this environment. That is our read.' The chief executive officer of Vast, Max Haot, told Ars that the company bet that starting with a minimum viable product was the best business strategy and fully funded that approach without government money. 'It seems like NASA is now leaning into an approach for the future of CLDs that is led by what industry believes it can achieve technically and build a credible business model around,' Haot told Ars. 'Seeing that information from contractors before committing to buying services can help increase long-term risk reduction. This seems similar to the successful approaches used by NASA for cargo and crew.' Vast has worked closely with SpaceX in the development of its station, to the extent that Haven-1 will largely rely on the Dragon spacecraft for life support and some other functions. OpenAI is removing ChatGPT conversations from Google

OpenAI has removed a feature that made shared ChatGPT conversations appear in search results. The "short-lived experiment" was based on the chatbot's link creation option. After complaints, OpenAI's chief information security officer, Dane Stuckey, said the company is working to remove the chats from search engines. The public outrage stems from a Fast Company article from earlier this week (via Ars Technica ). Fast Company said it found thousands of ChatGPT conversations in Google search results. The indexed chats didn't explicitly include identifying information. But in some cases, their contents reportedly contained specific details that could point to the source. To be clear, this wasn't a hack or leak. It was tied to a box users could tick when creating a shareable URL directing to a chat. In the pop-up for creating a public link, the option to "Make this chat discoverable" appeared. The more direct explanation ("allows it to be shown in web searches") appeared in a smaller, grayer font below. Users had to tick that box to make the chat indexed. You may wonder why people creating a public link to a chat would have a problem with its contents being public. But Fast Company noted that people could have made the URLs to share in messaging apps or as an easy way to revisit the chats later. Regardless, the public discoverability option is gone now. In Fast Company 's report, Stuckey defended the feature's labeling as "sufficiently clear." But after the outcry grew, OpenAI relented. "Ultimately, we think this feature introduced too many opportunities for folks to accidentally share things they didn't intend to, so we're removing the option," Stuckey announced on Thursday.
