What's it like to intercept an Arch Manning pass? ‘It was just amazing'

New York Times27-03-2025
Tony Burns arrived at Southwest Mississippi Community College last fall with a reputation. He wasn't a blue-chip prospect or a household name in recruiting circles. But he accomplished something during his junior season at University Lab High in Baton Rouge, La., that made him somewhat of a celebrity.

'My teammates asked me,' Burns said, ''Didn't you pick off Arch Manning?' I'm like, 'Yeah, I won't be trying to make it a big deal.'
'(But) it's Arch Manning. Everybody knows him.'
For the past two seasons, Manning has been the most famous backup quarterback in college football. Now, with Quinn Ewers off to the NFL, Manning will take over as the starter on a Texas team expected to contend for a national championship. It's not an exaggeration to call him one of the most hyped college football players … ever.
And someday, Burns and his close friend and former teammate, Marcus Dawson Jr., will tell their children about the day they got the best of the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2023.
Before Manning signed with Texas — in one of the most high-profile recruitments in decades — he threw just two interceptions during an otherwise flawless senior year at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans. Both came in the final game of his career, a 49-13 loss to University Lab in the third round of the Division III LHSAA Playoffs.
Burns recorded the first pick a few minutes into the third quarter. Dawson came up with the second — a 100-yard pick six early in the fourth that extended the Cubs' lead to 42-6.
Welcome to their two-person club.
'Tony was like my best friend,' said Dawson, now a redshirt freshman defensive back at Nicholls. 'We played DB with each other all through middle school and high school, so we had good chemistry. Before the game, we were saying, 'We're gonna catch an interception one way or another.' We had it on our mind.
'(When we both did), we were just like, 'Boy, we really just did that. Just picked off the No. 1 quarterback in the nation.''
No one on University Lab's scout team could realistically replicate just how dynamic Manning was with the ball in his hand, but head coach Andy Martin and his team had pored over film all week looking for tendencies, how the ball came out of his hands, the way he spun it and the decisions he made. That diligence almost paid off in the first half when Manning threw the ball right to Burns.

But he dropped it.
'I was like, 'He's going to throw it to me again,'' Burns said of his halftime mindset, almost manifesting the future. ''He's gotta throw it to me again.' And when we came out of halftime, he just threw it right to me.'
The throw was low, Martin remembered. A rare miscue from the best quarterback in the country, who hadn't thrown a pick in 364 days and had already broken school records for passing yards and touchdowns previously held by his famous uncles, Peyton and Eli.
'I was like, 'Oh!' It was just amazing. I was just happy because it was too many emotions going through the game,' Burns said. 'We were winning. I'm like, 'I just picked off Arch Manning.' I didn't even know I was his first interception.'
One quarter later, it was Dawson's turn.
With Newman in the red zone early in the fourth quarter, Manning tried to squeeze a ball through traffic to a receiver in the end zone.
'He was staring because he knew I was one of the good safeties on my team, so the whole game, he was kind of looking me off a lot,' said Dawson, who was a three-star prospect in the Class of 2024. 'And then it came to that play. I was just in the right position. I just remember the ball coming right to my hands, and then as soon as I caught it, I just got to running.'
Dawson sprinted those 100 yards downfield on a bum ankle with two torn ligaments. He practically willed himself to the goal line.
'I'm processing it,' he said. 'I'm like, 'Dang, I just picked him off. One of the top quarterbacks, I just picked him off.' That was in my head when I caught it. And then at the same time, I'm like, 'Oh, I gotta score now.'
'A 100-yard pick six in high school, I mean — it's kinda good. It's just crazy a little bit.'

Manning was extremely gracious in defeat and congratulated the Cubs following the game, which Martin said only confirmed his admiration for the young quarterback. 'A class act,' the coach said.
In the end, University Lab was the better team and was able to cash in on a few risky throws from a quarterback who made it look easy for much of the season.

'We knew coming in, that was one of our themes — we knew that he didn't make mistakes. And that was so big for him,' Martin said. 'You don't see that much in high school — a guy that can be that good and just not make any mistakes. He was a heck of a player. He really was.'
With Manning now set to take over in Austin, count Martin, Dawson and Burns among his many fans.
'I think he's gonna do great. I really do. I think the sky's the limit for him. He's just so impressive,' Martin said.
'I think it'll be awesome. … He's a good QB,' Burns added.
'Oh yeah,' Dawson said. 'He's going to do excellent at Texas.'
Both players do have one last wish, though.
'Hopefully, I get to play against him again,' said Burns, who plans to commit to a four-year school after one more season in junior college.
Dawson took it a step further.
'Hopefully,' he said, 'one day we'll both be big somewhere in the NFL.'

Why five-star recruit Okunlola has stuck with UM, and Mirabal's forecast for him

In this world of instant gratification — where some college football players change schools two or three times in a single offseason — it would have been very easy for former five-star recruit Samson Okunlola to flee Coral Gables and look for a college where he could immediately step into a starting lineup. But Okunlola has displayed a quality in short supply in college sports: patience. Despite entering UM in 2023 regarded as one of the nation's top offensive tackles (247 Sports ranked him fourth among tackles and the 20th-best player overall), Okunlola hasn't complained about playing only 64 snaps on offense last season after logging just 15 as a freshman. He hasn't lamented riding the bench while his Class of 2023 teammate Francis Mauigoa, who was rated the No. 2 offensive tackle in 2023, has started for two years. Instead of entering the portal, Okunlola focused on his studies — he received his bachelor's degree in just 2 ½ years — and worked on his game. The growth has been so pronounced that offensive line coach Alex Mirabal said he's confident that Okunlola 'absolutely' will become a multiyear starter for UM — 'I have no doubt about that' — even though he's not expected to start at the beginning of this season, barring injuries. 'He's going to make it because of his work ethic and want-to, which are unbelievable,' Mirabal said during a recent conversation. 'He has done an unbelievable job [improving]. There are 17 ACC schools; he can start at all of them. He has displayed a tremendous amount of a thing people nowadays lack, which is patience. He's trusting in his work. With his intelligence, he's going to achieve what we all want him to achieve.' Asked if he ever considered leaving, Okunlola suggested he hasn't, though he didn't answer directly. 'I'm committed to the process,' he said. 'I love the process. I love hard work. I love being detailed and getting better.' Mirabal said: 'I tell people all the time — the fans, the media, coaches, they complain about how negative the transfer portal is. And then they question the kid, 'How come you stuck around? How come you haven't jumped in the portal?' I truly believe it's because Samson knows and sees that our coaching staff believes in him and trusts him. I feel he believes in us and trusts us, as does his family. He sees himself growing and developing.' Okunlola's willingness to learn guard has made him more versatile. He now could fill in at four positions if UM has an injury to a starting group that is expected to include Markel Bell and Mauigoa at tackle, Michael McCoy and Anez Cooper at guard and James Brockermeyer at center. Ryan Rodriguez figures to be the backup center and backup left guard. Asked what is Okunlola's best position, Mirabal said, 'it used to be tackle, and I still think it's tackle. But he can play guard. A lot of young guys think 'I'm only a tackle.'… He has grown past [that]. Over the last year and a half, he's like, 'I'm an O-lineman. I'll do whatever it takes.' 'I used to think he's only going to be a tackle. But he's a guy in my opinion that can play either tackle or guard spots.' Okunlola said Mirabal, during the past two years, has encouraged him to 'work on the mental side of the game, watching more film, being more confident in the way I play.' He's healthy now, after sustaining a torn MCL as a freshman, then needing surgery on a hand injury suffered during a UM bowl practice last December. Asked if he has felt any frustration not playing after entering UM as a ballyhooed prospect, Okunlola said: 'I leave it up to the Lord. The Lord has been with me through the whole process.' Okunlola, who was an excellent student at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, recently joined backup quarterback Emory Williams as the only current Canes to graduate in 2 ½ years. 'It's definitely an honor,' Okunlola said. 'My mother cried about it. It was a big thing for me and my family.' He's now pursuing a master's degree in sports administration, taking classes exclusively on line. 'I can put more of my time in person to be in person more for football,' he said. 'And online, I can play with my schedule a little more.'

Preseason US LBM Coaches Poll overlooks quarterback inexperience at top of rankings

They say it over and over. The game is all about the quarterback. Those who have experience at the most important position on the field, college football coaches insist, win big games. Unless, apparently, you're a blue blood program. So while you stare at the first US LBM Coaches Poll of the 2025 college football season, don't ignore the glaring reality staring back. Five of the top eight teams have first-time starters at the most important position on the field. 'The quarterback is critical to everything you do,' Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. 'There's no getting around it.' It is here where we introduced Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Alabama. All among the top 10 in the Coaches Poll, and all preseason favorites to reach the College Football Playoff — and possibly much more. All with first-time, full-time starters. If you think the CFP selection committee has problems ranking teams, the 67 coaches shouldn't get pass on criticism, either. There's a whole lot of funky in the first Coaches Poll, beginning at the top with teams ranked on reputation. Not their critical quarterback component. The quarterbacks at those five blue bloods – teams with a combined 119-23 record over the last two seasons – have combined to throw 262 career passes. Arch Manning of Texas has never started an SEC road game, and his only SEC start came last season against tomato can Mississippi State. Gunner Stockton of Georgia has never started an SEC game. CJ Carr of Notre Dame, Julian Sayin of Ohio State and Ty Simpson of Alabama have never started a game. Think about this: college football coaches have essentially told you they believe in a group of quarterbacks who, on average, have 50 career throws each. Maybe this isn't the layup everyone thinks it is. Maybe we're on the verge of a wild ride through the 2025 season, where the unknown unfolds into the unthinkable. Especially considering there's much more to this quarterback story than just first-time, full-time starters. Texas is preseason No.1 for the first time in school history, more hype baggage (and expectations) for Manning to carry before the first snap of the season. After back-to-back national titles in 2021-22, Georgia missed the CFP in 2023 and last year sustained an ugly loss in the quarterfinals — and suddenly looks vulnerable. Ohio State is completely rebuilt on both sides of the ball (only nine starters return), and all Sayin has to do is defend a national title. And beat Michigan for the first time since 2019. Simpson begins his fourth season at Alabama, a program that owned the four-team CFP under former coach Nick Saban — but couldn't make the first 12-team field in 2024. Simpson is merely carrying that weight, OK? ARCH MADNESS: Manning rumor madness with Nick Saban and Cleveland Browns GOOD FIGHT: Deion Sanders is stepping up in biggest battle of career Then there's Carr, a talented redshirt freshman who was given the keys to a championship-level team after Irish coach Marcus Freeman declined to add an experienced quarterback from the transfer portal — and go all-in with the unknown. 'I feel like the experience from last year is invaluable,' Stockton said. That 'experience' consisted of the second half of the SEC championship game victory over Texas, and the CFP quarterfinal loss to Notre Dame. Manning's experience is a home game against the worst team in the SEC, and a home game against lightweight Louisiana-Monroe. Simpson's most extended time on the field was two years ago in a tight win over South Florida, when he replaced starter Tyler Buchner and was essentially the best of two bad options. Carr and Sayin will take their first legitimate college football snaps in the season opener, both in monster non-conference games. Notre Dame plays at Miami, and Ohio State plays host to Texas. 'You want command of the offense," said Ohio State coach Ryan Day, who insists Sayin is still competing with junior Lincoln Kienholz – who has also never started a game – for the starting job. 'When you stand in there as a quarterback, you want everyone to believe in you. You want them to follow your command.' That's all it takes? This will be a cakewalk. 2025 BMW Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

The FedExCup Playoffs roll on with this week's 2025 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. The top 50 players in the FedExCup standings will tee it up with the goal of being one of the 30 golfers advancing to the Tour Championship next week at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The first round begins on Thursday and the tournament, which has no cut, will wrap up on Sunday. Below, we look at BMW Championship odds from BetMGM Sportsbook's odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions. The BMW Championship features a 49-player field with Rory McIlroy back after a week off, but Sepp Straka had to withdraw Monday due to a personal matter. Unsurprisingly, Scottie Scheffler (+225) is the favorite to win, with McIlroy (+700) second and Tommy Fleetwood (+1600) also near the top of the board. The last time this event was played at Caves Valley, Patrick Cantlay (+1800) beat out Bryson DeChambeau in a playoff in 2021. Caves Valley hosted this event in 2021, but has since undergone an extensive renovation project. It's now a par 70 after being played as a par 72, despite the fact that 60 yards were added to the overall length of the course. (7,601 yards) Every green is newly built, as well, so it will present some different challenges for players after the scores were remarkably low 4 years ago; Cantlay was 27-under at the end of the week. BMW Championship – Expert picks Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 6:59 p.m. ET. Aberg has been up and down for most of the year, but he's been trending up as of late. He finished T-8 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T-23 at the Open Championship and T-9 last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He now comes to a course that's long and requires accuracy now that there's thicker rough, which suits his game. Schauffele didn't have a great week the last time the BMW was at Caves Valley, finishing T-49 with rounds of 75 and 71 on the weekend. However, he's now in desperation mode, needing a good week to make the Tour Championship again. Plus, he's finished T-8, T-7 and T-22 in his last 3 starts worldwide, so he's in fairly good form. BMW Championship picks – Contenders Burns lit it up on 2 of the days at Caves Valley in 2021, shooting 64 in the opening round and 65 on Saturday. He finished alone in eighth place in what was a great week for Burns, getting him into the Tour Championship. He's cooled off after a scintillating May and June, but now that he's headed to Caves Valley, he could get hot again. Bhatia jumped out in front last week with an opening round of 8-under, but he was unable to continue that solid play. Still, he finished 10-under in sixth place, only 6 shots off the lead of Justin Rose and J.J. Spaun. His game is coming together at the right time as he tries to keep things going in the playoffs. Im had a solid week in Memphis, finishing T-17 despite shooting 1-over in the final round. That got him into the next round of the playoffs and he now gets to play a course where he came in third at 23-under in 2021. It won't be quite the birdie fest it was 4 years ago, but Im is positioned to keep his season rolling this week. WATCH: PGA Tour is live on ESPN+! Get ESPN+ BMW Championship picks – Long shots With only 49 players in the field, there aren't many true long shots on the board. However, Harman is a worthy pick at +8000. He tied for 29th here 4 years ago and could have another strong week in Maryland despite not being the longest hitter on tour. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now!
