Yahoo09-07-2025
The Cavaliers left the 2025 NBA Draft on June 26 with two players, second-round picks Tyrese Proctor and Saliou Niang.
A 6-foot-4¼, 183-pound guard, Proctor spent the past three seasons playing for Duke. A 6-7, 204-pound wing, Niang played for Trento in Italy the last two seasons. They are both 21 years old.

Cavs general manager Mike Gansey broke down the team's assessments of Proctor, the 49th overall pick, and Niang, the 58th overall selection. Here's what he said:

Scouting report on Cavs draft pick Tyrese Proctor
Gansey confirmed the Cavs plan to fill a full-time roster spot by signing Proctor to a multiyear contract instead of a two-way deal. Projected to be a second-apron team, the Cavs have limited financial flexibility and two guards headed for unrestricted free agency, Ty Jerome and Sam Merrill.

Gansey said the Cavs had Proctor "almost as a first-round grade" when they evaluated him in the buildup to the draft.

"At Duke, everyone's seen him play," Gansey said of Proctor. "He had a great year this year going to Final Four, and he got a lot better, 40% from 3, and we're excited about him because he's coming from a winning program. Jon Scheyer is a very good coach, and he's obviously learned with him.
"The thing that attracted us was he can play on and off the ball. He's got great size at 6-5, can play some combo and on top of the 40% shooting, he comes from a winning pedigree, especially this year. I think he was the fifth Duke player drafted. So basically their whole starting five was drafted, and he can fill a role."

Tyrese Proctor stats at Duke
A native of Australia and a product of the NBA Global Academy, Proctor averaged 10.8 points on 42.1% shooting from the field (36.5% on 3-pointers), 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 29.9 minutes in three seasons at Duke (106 games with 97 starts).

As a junior last season, he averaged 12.4 points on 45.2% shooting from the floor (40.5% on 3s), 3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 29.9 minutes. He earned a third-team All-ACC selection.

Gansey identified Proctor's shooting as his most NBA-ready skill.
But Gansey added, "You can't have enough ball handlers. ... You can run him off screens. He can play pick-and-roll. He can get in the paint. He's got a good midrange game. He makes plays for others."
Scouting report on Cavs draft pick Saliou Niang
Gansey said the Cavs will keep Niang overseas "for at least a year, if not more." A native of Senegal, Niang will stay in Italy and play for Virtus Bologna, a EuroLeague team, Gansey said.

"The last two years, the strides he's made have been pretty incredible," Gansey said. "Super athletic, 6-7, really long, can really guard. He was just the NBA Eurocamp Defensive Player of the Year. So he's really good on the defensive side of the ball, his versatility there. He can slash, a good cutter, a good finisher around the rim, but he's really got to improve his 3-point shooting. He's not a great shooter right now, but it's improving."

Gansey noted the Cavs' international scouts have been tracking Niang since he was about 15 years old.
"He's gotten a lot better," Gansey said.

Golden State Warriors remain short-handed after three weeks of NBA free agency

The Golden State Warriors only have nine players under contract heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. There's been no movement from the franchise during the opening three weeks of NBA free agency. Rumors linking the Warriors to Al Horford and a return for De'Anthony Melton are yet to materialize. Furthermore, Golden State's negotiations with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga appear to have reached a stalemate. As such, the Warriors are in a difficult spot as we approach the dead point in the summer. Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Joe Lacob will both understand the need to get the ball rolling on some potential additions to the roster. After all, Steve Kerr will want a full team ready for when tranining camp and preseason begins later this year. In a recent episode of ESPN's NBA Today, cap expert Bobby Marks explained the uphill battle the Warriors currently face, and why it's important for the franchise to start gaining traction on some roster additions in the coming weeks. Does Jaylen Brown's future lie away from the Boston Celtics?

Every summer, Jaylen Brown's name is floated in trade talks. The 2024 NBA Finals MVP is often viewed as a dispensable member of the Boston Celtics' rotation, despite being one of the top forwards in the NBA and a key player in Joe Mazzulla's rotation. This summer has been no different, despite the fact that Brown is set to embrace a leading role on the Celtics roster due to Jayson Tatum's injury-induced absence. Recently, Brown sat down for an interview with Noa Dalzell of Celtics Blog. During the discussion, he noted how he hasn't always felt capable of being his true self around the city, noting politics as a potential reason. 'It's been a long journey here in Boston,' Brown said. 'I've had to deal with a lot. I feel like I haven't been able to be myself in certain capacities — because of the politics, and because maybe people feel uncomfortable with who I am.' Those comments were quickly used to create a new wave of potential trade talk surrounding Brown. In a recent episode of "WEEI Afternoons," the concept of Brown potentially being traded, either this season or next, was a primary discussion point among the two hosts. Chris Paul agrees to deal with Clippers ahead of 21st NBA season: Reports

Chris Paul has agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Longtime NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Monday that Paul will sign a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Clippers, whom Paul played for between 2011-17. Both Charania and Haynes reported that the 2025-26 season — Paul's 21st season in the NBA — will likely be the 12-time All-Star's last in the league. He played with San Antonio Spurs on a 1-year, $10.9 million contract this past season. Paul entered the offseason as an unrestricted free agent and one of the best available point guards available. In fact, after Fred VanVleet re-signed with the Houston Rockets, Paul was Yahoo Sports' top-ranked free-agent point guard. While he's no longer a high-level scorer, Paul remains an effective floor general and distributor at 40 years old. And he's coming off his healthiest season in years. Paul played in and started each of San Antonio's 82 games last season. Paul averaged a career-low 8.8 points per game in 2024-25. But he remained one of basketball's best playmakers with averages of 7.4 assists and 1.6 turnovers per game. When called upon to shoot, he was efficient from long distance with a 37.7% success rate on 4.5 3-point attempts per game. And the six-time steals champion remained a factor on defense while averaging 1.3 steals per game. In short, Paul may not be what he was at his peak, which is arguably the greatest pure point guard of his generation on both sides of the ball. But he remains an impact player and one of the league's most respected veteran voices on and off the floor.
