Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen to bring 10 Things I Hate About You to Broadway
Nearly 30 years after it cemented 1999 as a watershed year for teen movies, 10 Things I Hate About You is headed to Broadway, led by Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen.
Dunham, the creator of another coming-of-age touchstone with HBO's Girls, will co-write the adaptation with playwright Jessica Huang. Pop singer-songwriter Jepsen will write the score with Ethan Gruska, with whom she worked on her most recent album, 2023's The Loveliest Time.
The musical, first reported by Billboard, rounds out its creative team with Tony-winning director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, who most recently provided music and lyrics for Almost Famous: The Musical; and producer Mike Bosner, who helped shepherd Shucked and Beautiful – The Carole King Musical to Broadway.
Based on Shakespeare's 1594 play The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You was a box office hit in 1999 that gained cult-favorite status in the years since, launching the careers of Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. Written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith and directed by Gil Junger, the romantic comedy followed the travails of the Stratford sisters in the 1990s Seattle suburbs, as they're subjected to their father's strict rules on dating and wooed by fellow students.
The film was later adapted into a TV sitcom by ABC Family, which ran for 20 episodes starting in 2009.
Dunham's latest project, the rom-com series Too Much, will be released by Netflix later this year. The show stars Megan Stalter as Jessica, a New Yorker who starts over in London after a breakup and connects with Will Sharpe's Felix. She is also writing a film on disgraced crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, of FTX collapse fame, for Apple and A24, as well as the upcoming rom-com Good Sex, starring Natalie Portman.
Jepsen, the Canadian songwriter behind such hits as Call Me Maybe and Run Away With Me, took over the title role in the Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella in 2014, and played Frenchy in Fox's Emmy-winning Grease: Live. The adaptation will be her first opportunity to work behind the scenes as a musical contributor.
An opening date and theater for the 10 Things I Hate About You musical is yet to be announced.

Ever the professional, Bey was unfazed as she continued to perform with her trousers around her ankles, and a dancer quickly ran over to rectify the situation. After tonight, Beyoncé will go on to perform on June 7, 10, 12, 14, and 16, following a string of dates across America, where she will perform tracks from her eighth studio album. While the stadium opened its doors to 62,000 fans, some are worried about the rainy conditions ahead of the gig. In the lead-up fans were metaphorically and literally preparing to dance in the rain, with many camping out in preparation. A TikTok posted by user Paolatravell shows countless fans in tents around the venue as early as 4am this morning. The show is set to go ahead regardless of the weather, something one American fan claimed is actually lucky. Fan Madeline DeFreece, who managed to not only survive the rain, but claimed it added to the show, told Metro: 'This show was meant to be performed in the rain. The way the fabric moved on the contemporary dancers — I could not imagine it any differently.' She continued: 'At one point the cowboys had a Magic Mike moment, thrusting the floor of the stage and immediately I turned to my friend and said, 'We are so privileged to be in such a time and place.' I mean it was hot and provocative in a way that I don't think Beyoncé nor her team planned for.' How to watch the 2025 Tony Awards
Broadway 's unusually rich 2024–25 season comes to an end on Sunday, June 8, when the 202 Tony Awards get handed out at Radio City Music Hall. The nominations have been made, the in-depth profiles of nominees have been written, our predictions have been nervously lodged. Now there's nothing left but the cheering—and, of course, the singing and dancing. The CBS broadcast on Sunday night will include musical performances by nine of this year's contenders: Best Musical nominees Dead Outlaw, Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending, Operation Mincemeat and Buena Vista Social Club; and Best Musical Revival nominees Gypsy, Sunset Blvd., Floyd Collins and Pirates! The Penzance Musical. If that's not enough to sate your hunger for Broadway, there will also be numbers from Real Women Have Curves and Just in Time. But wait, there's more! The original cast of Hamilton is scheduled to take to the stage to commemorate the show's tenth anniversary on Broadway. The show is also sure to include some original numbers—including, we assume, at least one for this year's host, the wickedly talented Cynthia Erivo. Here are six tips for watching the Tony Awards this year. 1. The Tony Awards will air live from coast to coast Theater is all about the thrill of the live moment. But until recently, viewers who weren't in the Eastern Time Zone watched the Tony telecast hours after happened. In the age of social media, that kind of delay is increasingly old-fashioned. So CBS now broadcasts the three-hour main portion of the awards ceremony live and simultaneously from coast to coast, starting at 8pm ET, 7pm CT, 6pm MT and 5pm PT. The Tonys will also stream live and on demand on Paramount+. If you're recording it on DVR to watch later, remember that the telecast sometimes runs long. 2. The Tonys will be in two parts—and the first will not be on CBS As has been the case for decades, not all of the 26 races will be included in the televised portion of the Tony ceremony. Many of the prizes will be handed out in the 80 minutes before the CBS telecast begins, including all eight design awards and probably those for book, choreography and orchestrations. The practice of splitting the Tonys into two parts always engenders a certain amount of grumbling from Broadway fans who consider it a slight to the categories in the non-CBS portion. In fact, though, this division is what permits the existence of most of those categories to begin with. (When the telecast included every award, there were only three categories for designers and orchestrators; now there are nine.) 3. …But you can stream the first 80 minutes live on Pluto TV (and you should!) That first section of the Tony ceremony, called The Tony Awards: Act One, will be streamed live throughout the country in the "Pluto TV Celebrity" section of the free streaming service Pluto TV starting at 6:40pm ET/3:40pm PT. This part of the ceremony will be co-hosted by 2025 nominee Darren Criss and past winner Renée Elise Goldsberry. You'll want to make sure that you have Pluto TV installed in advance, because if you're a true theater lover, Act One is definitely worth watching. In addition to its competitive awards, it may include some of the honorary ones (such as the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement that is being given to Harvey Fierstein this year). 4. Watch it in a group if you can Theater, even theater on TV or a streaming service, is best experienced as part of a crowd. Host a viewing party with friends so you can participate in the collective experience, or find a venue near you that is hosting a Tonys-themed event. If you want to combine viewing with charity, consider the watch parties at 54 Below (a fundraiser for the venue's valuable ticket subsidy program) or at Jack Doyle's (a benefit for Theater Resources Unlimited). Less expensive options include the annual watch party at the West Village's Stonewall Inn, hosted by Anthony Fett and Lavinia Draper, a Tony celebration at Brooklyn Art Haus and a rooftop party at 230 Fifth. 5. Follow along on social media If you can't be part of an in-person audience, you can still be part of a virtual one. Theater Twitter goes nuts on Tony night, and tracking the community's reactions in real-time—the joy, the pain, the snark—can be part of the fun of the night. Brush up on the races before you watch The musical numbers do their own work, but the parts of the ceremony devoted to actually giving out the awards is a lot more suspenseful—and thus a lot more entertaining—if you know who the main players are. Get into the spirit by watching the all-time best past Tony performances The Tonys play an essential role in preserving Broadway history for future theater lovers to enjoy. Tom Felton to play Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter stage show
His appearance in the spin-off stage production, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, will mark the first time one of the film's stars will have featured in the show. The play, which serves as a continuation of the book's story following the main characters as adults, opened in London's West End in 2016 before transferring to New York two years later. Discussing playing the role of Malfoy again, Felton, 37, said: 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honours of my life. 'Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. 'It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and of course his iconic platinum blond hair – and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. 'I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.' Felton made his West End debut in the supernatural thriller 2:22 – A Ghost Story in 2022. He will begin his run in Harry Potter and The Cursed Child on November 11 for a limited 19 weeks, the production said.
