Iconic Actress Recalls 'Crazy' Run-In With Taylor Swift: 'I Hate Myself'
—she's just like us! The 10 Things I Hate About You star detailed the "crazy" run-in she once had with in the Wednesday, May 21 episode of the podcast How to Fail, where she begrudgingly opened up about meeting the superstar at a 'game night party' they were both invited to. Stiles, 44, joked, 'God, I hate myself right now," as she dove into the tale. "The biggest name-dropping I could do—but it happened and it's awesome.' Swift, she said, just "has that presence" where you "could just feel" her entering the room. She wasn't planning on bothering the Eras Tour artist that night, but as she was getting ready to leave, someone intervened, letting her know that Swift was interested in saying hi to her.'...he was like, 'She really likes your work,'" the actress recalled, adding that she "blacked out" as they shook hands. "I don't remember, actually, what happened after that—but she said something very nice to me.' Stiles further 'dissociated for a second' while the two chatted, but eventually "worked up the courage" to praise the musician. "You're amazing; this is crazy," she told her, recalling the way she "looked like she genuinely appreciated it." While "there used to be a part of [her]" that insisted she "play it cool" when crossing paths with another actor or artist that she admired, more recently she's "discovered that everybody that's a performer wants to know people are listening to their music or watching their movies or care at all." Now, she's "totally, unselfconsciously ready to say" how fantastic she thinks somebody is. 'Even somebody like Taylor Swift, who is the biggest star on the planet, seems humble enough or just positive enough to be like, 'Yeah, I'm glad that bazillions of people like to listen to my music,'" she pointed out. "They don't take it for granted.'

Julia Stiles Shares Julia Roberts' Advice On Set
Warning: Discussion of eating disorders. You know Julia Stiles. The 10 Things I Hate About You actor recently revealed that she once struggled with body image and how a co-star (with the same name) helped boost her confidence — Julia Roberts. On a May 20 episode of How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, Julia explained how the other Julia was a mother figure and inspiration on the set of their 2003 film Mona Lisa Smile. The actors starred in the Mike Newell drama alongside Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Ginnifer Goodwin. Julia Robert played Katherine Ann Watson, an art history teacher at Wellesley College in the 1950s who helped intellectually liberate her young students' minds. Think Dead Poets Society meets Steel Magnolias. "She was an amazing example for us, and she was so maternal with all the young women on that set," Julia said. "She was coming from a lot of experience of being not just a woman, but also a woman where your appearance is focused on so heavily." "Julia said to us, 'You're going to look back on these photos of you in your 20s and be like, I was beautiful — why didn't I see that?' And she's totally right." This echoes what Julia said about the Pretty Woman star earlier this year. On a Jan. 13 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she said, "She took care of all the girls on that set in a way she didn't really [have to]." "The movie hinged on her — she's a huge star; everything was riding on her performance in this movie," she added. "And yet she took the time to be really kind and generous to all the young women that were in it." In the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, Julia further explained how she struggled with "restrictive" eating in her 20s and early 30s as a Hollywood actor. "I'm not talking about an eating disorder — it was just restrictive, regimented, stressful. I always worried that it was going to be out of my control. Like, what if I gain weight?" she said. "I couldn't help but have a disordered relationship with it all." "There was stress around what your body looks like and trying to mold your body into a certain size," Julia continued. "As an actress, we go and promote on a red carpet, and we have to wear sample sizes from fashion designers. So it's always, 'Are we going to fit into the sample size?'" Now, as a mother of three children — Strummer, Arlo, and Henry — whom she shares with filmmaker Preston Cook, Julia acknowledged that negative perception was "a waste of fucking time" and everything that mattered "fell into place." "I've moved on," Julia said. "I've learned to be kinder in the way I think about my body and look at my body — to be kinder to myself but also trust your body ... I would be running on fumes, like, no sleep having just had a five-month-old baby. I didn't have time to think about, am I going to get back in shape to fit into those sample sizes?" Julia Stiles 'quit' 'serious' dance lessons after 'Save the Last Dance' made her feel 'self-conscious'
Julia Stiles quit "serious" dance lessons after 'Save the Last Dance' because the film made her "self-conscious" about performing. The 44-year-old actress played Sara in the 2001 romance flick, which saw her alter ego bond with an African American teenager called Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) and go on to "share a love for dance" while they tackle the "challenges of being an interracial couple". Julia's love for dance "has not gone away" and she boogies in her house and in virtual classes, but she is reluctant to attend a "serious" session because the star fears she will be "judged based on that movie". The '10 Things I Hate About You' star explained to Elizabeth Day on the 'How to Fail With Elizabeth Day' podcast: "Dancers are a judgmental group. They can be. They're also a very supportive group. "Yeah, it sounds stupid when I say it out loud now because, like, who cares? But I think that if I went to, like, a serious - whether it's ballet or hip-hop, kind of, dance class, I would feel like I was being judged based on that movie. And, like, I'm supposed to be a professional dancer. "But yeah, f*** it, I'm going to put my leggings on and find a class. I just have to find the right class, the one that would be, like, really fun for me." Julia took part in "virtual dance classes" during the Covid-19 pandemic, and she liked it because people could not "see what your body is doing" as she was performing in the "privacy of my own home". The 'Jason Bourne' actress explained: "I dance all the time in my house, in my living room. "I'll even dance on the sidewalk. I don't care. Like, I walk down a New York City street with my headphones on, and I will catch myself, like shimmying a little bit, and then I have to go, oh my God, I'm in public, you can't do that. "So, my love of dance has not gone away. But, I haven't been to a formal class at all. There was a period of time during the pandemic where I would do, like, virtual dance classes. "There were studios online that would post, like - there were great teachers that would post their own, like, dance class. And I would do that in the privacy of my own home. "And it's because, you know - am I lazy? Maybe. But it's also the self-consciousness of, like, dancing in front of ... I've done aqua zumba, which is like zumba inside a pool so nobody can see what your body is doing." And Julie is determined to overcome her self-consciousness. She said: "I guess it's just being, yeah, being self-conscious, which is such a shame. I should get over that. And I will."

How Heath Ledger Won His 10 Things I Hate About You Role
I think I probably speak for a lot of people when I say we aaaaall remember the first time we watched Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You. The late actor's performance as Patrick Verona in the 1999 Shakespeare-inspired teen movie is, IMHO, one of the best rom-com performances of all time. And what makes it even more magical to look back on is how it marked the beginning of his incredible Hollywood acting career, which, as we now know, was tragically cut short when he died in 2008 at the age of 28. Despite having already made a name for himself in various projects in his home of Australia, Heath's performance in 10 Things I Hate About You was widely considered his global breakout, propelling him into future projects like A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball, and, of course, Brokeback Mountain — the latter of which earned him his first Oscar nomination in 2006. Now, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director of 10 Things I Hate About You, Gil Junger, recalled how Heath's undeniable 'magnetism' landed him the lead role, despite, at the time, being a relatively unknown actor from the other side of the world. 'Actors always wanted to know, 'What did he do? What did he do to make you cast him?'' the director said, recalling that Heath was 'magic.' 'The truth of the matter is, we were casting and he walked into the room, and I'm very picky. I had already read 253 guys — 253 guys!' he went on. 'And then Marcia Ross, the head of Disney casting, said, 'Look, this next kid, I don't know him. It's a favor for an agent I respect. So if he's no good, just stop it and send him on his way.'' As the story goes, it didn't take Gil long to realize that they had a rising star on their hands, saying: 'This is the God's honest truth, on my parents' life: He took three steps into the room, and my thought was, 'If this fucker can read English, I'm going to cast him.'' Recalling Heath's energy, Gil described Heath as 'an incredible young man.' 'He just had a magnetism unlike I've ever felt. It was undeniable,' the filmmaker recalled. 'If there's old souls, he must have been centuries old because he just had a way about him that — he was only 17, and yet he just was so confident and loving and wanted to be the best he could be.' Along with now-well-known folks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz, and Gabrielle Union, Heath starred in the movie opposite Julia Stiles, who played his love interest Kat. Notably, one of my favorite scenes in the film was when Heath's character, Patrick, serenades Kat with a marching band — instantly iconic. Adorably, Gil remembered Heath's first day on set, right down to the details of his outfit. 'He was wearing Frye boots from the '70s, and then he had on these worn-out olive green leather pants, a white leather belt, some crazy shirt, and a hat like a beanie,' he told EW. 'And I looked at him and I thought, 'God, he's cool.' And then I also thought, 'If I wore one of those pieces of clothing, I would be the laughing stock of everyone that knows me.'' 'He just had this magic where you could just throw anything on him, maybe even paint it, and he'd be amazingly cool, because the kid you saw in the movie, that's who he was,' he added. 'He was just an amazing human.'
