Iconic Actress Recalls 'Crazy' Run-In With Taylor Swift: 'I Hate Myself'

Yahoo30-05-2025
—she's just like us!
The 10 Things I Hate About You star detailed the "crazy" run-in she once had with in the Wednesday, May 21 episode of the podcast How to Fail, where she begrudgingly opened up about meeting the superstar at a 'game night party' they were both invited to.
Stiles, 44, joked, 'God, I hate myself right now," as she dove into the tale. "The biggest name-dropping I could do—but it happened and it's awesome.'
Swift, she said, just "has that presence" where you "could just feel" her entering the room. She wasn't planning on bothering the Eras Tour artist that night, but as she was getting ready to leave, someone intervened, letting her know that Swift was interested in saying hi to her.'...he was like, 'She really likes your work,'" the actress recalled, adding that she "blacked out" as they shook hands. "I don't remember, actually, what happened after that—but she said something very nice to me.'
Stiles further 'dissociated for a second' while the two chatted, but eventually "worked up the courage" to praise the musician. "You're amazing; this is crazy," she told her, recalling the way she "looked like she genuinely appreciated it."
While "there used to be a part of [her]" that insisted she "play it cool" when crossing paths with another actor or artist that she admired, more recently she's "discovered that everybody that's a performer wants to know people are listening to their music or watching their movies or care at all."
Now, she's "totally, unselfconsciously ready to say" how fantastic she thinks somebody is.
'Even somebody like Taylor Swift, who is the biggest star on the planet, seems humble enough or just positive enough to be like, 'Yeah, I'm glad that bazillions of people like to listen to my music,'" she pointed out. "They don't take it for granted.'

Culture Digest: The best things to do, hear, see or watch in Europe this week

Last week, Taylor Swift announced her upcoming album 'The Life of a Showgirl', because she's nothing if not prolific! The news has (of course) consumed online discourse, with fans excited - but also a little sceptical. As Euronews Culture writer (and dedicated Swifty) Sarah Miansoni writes: "I had barely had any time to recover from Swift's last album, the gargantuan 'The Tortured Poets Department', and from the equally massive Eras Tour, and it was already time to dive into a new era? What if I wasn't ready for it?" We've still got a while to wait for its release on 3 October, and in the meantime - before more companies get in on the Swift marketing action and August slips away without an official Song of the Summer - there's plenty else to look forward to. From a fascinating exhibition exploring patient's dreams and nightmares at England's oldest psychiatric hospital, to Julia Ducournau's highly-anticipated new body horror 'Alpha', and a second season of James Gunn's Peacemaker - here are this week's highlights. Exhibitions Between Sleeping and Waking: Hospital Dreams and Visions Where: Bethlem Museum of the Mind (London, UK) When: Until 22 November 2025 England's oldest psychiatric hospital is exhibiting never-before-displayed creations by its patients. First opened in 1403, Bethlem Royal Hospital has become a site of enduring fascination, famously inspiring the 1946 horror film Bedlam starring Boris Karloff. Its dark history has become a lens through which people continue to examine societal perceptions of mental health - and the blurred lines between reality and illusions. It's this idea of a psychological limbo state that dominates 'Sleeping and Waking', with an immersive installation by artist Kate McDonnell at its heart; capturing visions of a disconnected mind. Haunting and captivating, visitors will find themselves transported to other worlds that feel both far removed, and resonant. Anne Geddes: Until Now Where: Art 28, Neues Kunstmuseum Tübingen (Tübingen, Germany) When: Until 21 September With her sweet and whimsical images of babies dressed as sunflowers and bumblebees, Australian photographer Anne Geddes' work became a hallmark of the '90s and early '00s. Used in cards, books and calendars, they're instantly recognisable to those that grew up with them. It's about time, then, that she had her first retrospective. Titled after her book of the same name, Until Now showcases 150 of Geddes images at the New Art Museum in Tübingen, including the identical triplets slumbering in a man's hands - still one of her most iconic. Saved Treasures of Gaza Where: The Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris, France) When: Until 2 November 2025 Documenting over 5,000 years of Gaza's cultural and archeological history, 'Saved Treasures of Gaza' is a powerful reminder of what has been and what's at stake for a country currently facing war and famine. From the small marble statue of a goddess, to the astonishing Abu Baraqeh mosaic, most of the 130 masterpieces on show have been kept in storage at the Geneva Museum of Art and History until now, unable to be returned to Gaza due to the unsafe conditions. Safely preserved, they now act as vessels for Palestine's richly storied identity - a way to connect people to the past, and reinforce hope for the future. Bonus highlight: To celebrate the 250th birthday of the celebrated 'Pride and Prejudice' author, Jane Austen's House is hosting 'Austenmania!' until 4 January 2026 (Hampshire, UK). Related Euronews Culture's Film of the Week: 'Together' - The ultimate date movie? Movies Alpha Where: French cinemas When: 20 August After winning the Palme d'or in 2021 for her body horror triumph Titane, anticipation has been - excuse the pun - revving up for Julia Ducournau's third feature. Having premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Alpha is set amidst the '80s AIDS epidemic, following a young girl (Alia Bhatt) who is feared to have contracted the disease after getting a tattoo. Infused with the gnawing paranoia and anxiety that's become a trademark of Ducournau's works, it's proven divisive with critics so far - but is guaranteed to get under your skin. Stay tuned for our full review on Friday. Bonus highlight: Ari Aster's neo-Western satire Eddington arrives in UK cinemas on the 22 August, with a staggered release across other European countries to follow. Read our review here. And if you haven't caught up on two of this summer's biggest horror hits, Weapons and Together are still in cinemas. Don't miss out. TV series Peacemaker Season 2 Where: Sky Max and NOW When: 22 August Is this a James Gunn summer? Fresh off his box office success with Superman, the filmmaker and co-CEO of DC Studios has gifted us a second series of his hit show Peacemaker. Part of Gunn's wider vision for rebooting the DC Universe, it's a continuation of the story of Christopher Smith (John Cena), a special-trained operative who will do anything - and kill anyone - in his quest for peace. We can expect cameos from other DC characters, including Superman and Hawkgirl, as the new era of DC ramps up its expansion. Bonus highlight: The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, a miniseries based on the story of Knox's wrongful conviction in 2007, streams from 20 August (Disney+). Music Wolf Alice: The Clearing When: 22 August Four long years since their last album, 'Blue Weekend', British alt-rock band Wolf Alice are returning with a highly-anticipated fourth studio release. From the psychedelic shimmers of 'White Horses' to the soothing melodrama of 'The Sofa', its singles so far suggest we're in for a collection that's soulful and nostalgic, textured with 70s influences like George Harrison, while still grounded in contemporary reflections. Bonus highlight: Canadian folk musician Kathleen Edwards returns with her sixth studio album, 'Billionaire', on 22 August.

Taylor Swift On New Heights Podcast: A Marketing Masterclass For The Ages

Taylor Swift was never sporty. At least, that what she said herself. Yet this week, she dominated one of the most male-coded corners of sports culture. On her record-breaking debut appearance on New Heights, the football podcast hosted by her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and his brother Jason, the global pop phenomenon openly admitted that until recently she didn't know the rules when it came to football. Making an appearance on a podcast by bros, for bros, Swift announced the release of her twelfth studio album, titled The Life of a Showgirl, drawing an audience of 1.3 million live viewers on YouTube, nearly double the audience that tuned in live to Donald Trump's much-hyped appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience during his 2024 election run. Taylor Swift Sets the Price It's hard not to see these numbers as a sweet win for Swift, especially in light of Donald Trump's September 2024 comments on Fox & Friends, where he dismissed her as someone who 'seems to always endorse a Democrat' warning she would 'probably pay a price for it…in the marketplace.' If this week proved anything, it's that when it comes to the cultural zeitgeist that is Swift, far from paying a price, Swift is a woman who sets the price, and the market has shown us time again, it's more than willing to pay. Taylor Swift Proves Women Can Expand Culture Of course, the NFL already knows what Swift means for its bottom line. Stadium shots of her in a red lip did more for ticket sales and broadcast ratings than most quarterbacks could dream of. And yet, much has been made and mocked of her relationship with Kelce and the NFL. She's been booed in stadiums, joked at by mainstream media, and roasted online to the extent that both the NFL and high-profile players have publicly defended her right to attend. Perhaps that's why the impact of this podcast appearance is even more significant. It offered proof that women don't just consume culture, they expand it. This was a two hour podcast episode that shattered decades of siloed marketing assumptions, proving audiences are far more fluid than the old playbook allows. It signaled that women's fandom is not niche. It moves markets, breaks records, and has the power to reshape industries. Whether it's ticket sales, album streams, or podcast viewership, the Swift phenomenon is measurable, massive, and undeniable. The Taylor Swift Effect: Viewership Earthquake The numbers speak for themselves. Swift's appearance didn't just break records, it reshaped the audience. Within 24 hours of the episode's release, female viewership on Spotify increased by over 600%, marking the largest single-day demographic shift in New Heights' history, with Spotify reporting, the episode had become one of this past year's highest-performing podcasts within just one day of its release Taylor Swift Shows Curiosity Is Currency It further demonstrated that curiosity has huge commercial leverage. Swift did not posture as an authority on the NFL, instead admitting she didn't know what a tight end was when her and Kelce first connected, and is now as she describes 'obsessed' with the sport. That admission is more than charming self-deprecation- it's a direct challenge to decades of sports culture that has often patronized or dismissed women's interest whose engagement was rarely seen as influential. Swift's approach flipped that script entirely. By showing that enthusiasm, curiosity, and authenticity can resonate with millions of viewers, she sent a message that influence isn't just about technical mastery and enthusiasm can be as influential in growing viewership as expertise. The opportunity lies in connecting audiences, breaking assumptions, and reshaping who gets to matter in sports culture. Taylor Swift's Masterclass in Modern Influence In an era where media, sports, and politics compete for attention, Taylor Swift has shown us just how cultural influence is evolving. For two hours, Swifties and sports fans shared a moment that made her more than a performer: she became a connector, wielding a form of soft power rarely seen so visibly from women. This wasn't just a record-breaking media moment- it was a masterclass in marketing in the digital age, where shaping culture, connecting communities, and turning curiosity into commerce defines success.

Khalen Saunders traded from Saints to Jaguars on same day he played Jaguars for Saints

Player for player trades are rare in the NFL these day. But the players having gone against one another on the same day? Even if it was a preseason Week 2 tie, that still has to be like seeing a bald eagle. The New Orleans Saints sent defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to the Jacksonville Jaguars for center Luke Fortner on Sunday, Aug. 17, after the two teams tied at 17. Saunders and Fortner still managed to end the day as enemies despite switching teams. Saunders won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs prior to starting 27 of 30 possible games over the last two seasons for the Saints. He started for the Saints on Sunday. Fortner entered for the Jaguars as a backup. Saunders had one of the most notable moments in prime time during the 2024 season. During the Saints' Week 5 loss to the Chiefs, Saunders picked off Patrick Mahomes while dropping into coverage in the end zone late in the third quarter. Saunders, listed at 325 pounds, rumbled 37 yards up the field before being brought down. Coincidentally enough, his brother, Kameron Saunders, was a backup dancer for Taylor Swift on the "Eras Tour." Khalen Saunders was a third-round pick by the Chiefs in 2019 and spent his first four seasons of his career with the team. During the offseason, the Saints bolstered the defensive line by trading for Davon Godchaux and signing Jonathan Bullard. Fortner is a fourth-year guard from the University of Kentucky who lost his starting spot last season and is entering the final year of his rookie contract.
