SQU jumps 28 places in QS world rankings 2026
Muscat – Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has marked a major achievement by climbing 28 spots in the QS World University Rankings 2026, securing the 334th position globally. This is the second consecutive year SQU has advanced by 28 places, underscoring its sustained efforts to elevate academic performance and global standing.
The 2026 edition of the QS rankings assessed 1,503 universities out of 8,467 worldwide, with 112 new institutions added to the list. SQU's progress was driven by improvements in several key indicators, including Academic Reputation, Employment Outcomes, Citations per Faculty, and the International Research Network.
The university's rising global stature reflects its strategic focus on producing highly qualified graduates and strengthening its research ecosystem in line with international standards.
Commenting on the achievement, H.H. Sayyid Dr. Fahad bin Al Julanda Al Said, Vice Chancellor of SQU, said: 'This accomplishment is a true reflection of our reality and the result of dedicated efforts to position Sultan Qaboos University among the world's leading academic institutions. It aligns with our goal of enhancing the quality of education and achieving the aspirations of Oman Vision 2040.'
Oman Vision 2040 aims for at least one Omani university to rank among the top 300 globally by the year 2040—a milestone SQU is steadily approaching.
In subject-specific rankings released last year, SQU also saw impressive results: its Petroleum Engineering programme was ranked 25th globally, while Nursing secured 32nd place, both among the top 50 globally in their respective fields.
These consistent achievements highlight SQU's growing reputation as a centre of excellence in higher education and research, both regionally and internationally.

Forum highlights integration between academic, industrial sectors
More Omani students will benefit from the Siraj Foundation, an endowment foundation supporting education, during the 2025-2026 period, turning their dreams into reality, as announced by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. This announcement was made at the First Annual Forum to Enhance Integration between the Academic and Industrial Sectors, held under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, at the Ministry's General Diwan office on Wednesday. During the forum, 18 agreements were signed to promote community engagement in enhancing education, with the primary goal of strengthening partnerships between higher education institutions and society. These agreements aim to cultivate a culture of endowment in support of education, focusing on raising awareness among students, teaching staff and administrative departments, as well as encouraging participation in educational institution events and activities. The forum also featured visual presentations from private higher education institutions, public and private sector organisations; and the Siraj Education Endowment Foundation. The Ministry also presented the Ejaad platform, emphasising cooperation between the academic and industrial sectors. Engineer Mahmoud bin Khalfan al Hadidi, CEO of the Siraj Foundation, expressed pride in expanding the network of partnerships with educational institutions to enhance social solidarity and support students in need. The Foundation is actively implementing initiatives and programmes to support education in Oman, including the "University Student Sponsorship" initiative and the "Siraj Advantages" electronic platform, which facilitate donations and support for students pursuing higher education. The First Annual Forum to Enhance Integration between the Academic and Industrial Sectors brought together institutions from both sectors and was attended by CEOs of public and private sector organisations, as well as presidents and deans of private higher education institutions. In his opening speech, Yahya bin Salam al Mandhari, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, emphasised the importance of aligning higher education with the needs of the labour market to contribute to sustainable development, in line with Oman Vision 2040. The forum aimed to exchange experiences in areas such as scientific research, training for graduate students and financing projects in private higher education institutions, highlighting the significance of developing a flexible educational system to meet the demands of the changing times and supply the labour market with skilled national talents.

Omanis begin scientific journey to NASA
TEXAS: The Omani teams shortlisted for the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024 have commenced their scientific visit to the United States with a tour of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The exchange programme is organised by the US Embassy in Oman in collaboration with the University of Technology and Applied Sciences. The visit began with the Omani team exploring Space Center Houston, one of the premier scientific destinations in the US. The team toured the Independence Plaza, home to a full-scale replica of the NASA space shuttle mounted atop the historic shuttle carrier aircraft and examined exhibition halls featuring original spacecraft, including the Apollo 17 command module. Dr Fatima al Harthy, team leader, stated that the visit to Johnson Space Center provided the team with a unique opportunity to engage with NASA's storied history and ambitious future. She emphasised that such experiences not only inspire participants but also foster a culture of scientific innovation among Omani youth. The team comprises distinguished students from several Omani educational institutions, including the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, the Military Technological College and the German University of Technology in Oman. This visit reflects a forward-looking vision to empower Omani youth by exposing them to global experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
