Celebrity Cruises passengers sound alarm on industry-wide issue

For most cruisers, the days leading up to a cruise vacation are full of excitement, anticipation, and planning.
Finally, your long-awaited vacation is almost here, and if you're like me, you feel a sudden rush to plan out your days and prepare yourself for what to expect during your cruise.

Besides planning port days in advance, I like to familiarize myself with the ship's onboard features, look over dining menus, and review entertainment schedules ahead of time, if I can.
While plenty of cruisers choose to relax and wing it, some of us can relax more easily if we have an idea of how our days will go before we set foot on the ship.
But there's one big barrier to this kind of cruise vacation preparation - poor cruise line mobile app usability.
This problem was recently raised for discussion in the Celebrity Cruises community on Reddit, but it isn't exclusive to one cruise line.

"I'm excited for my cruise, but I need to put this out there," Reddit user GreaseCrow vented. "The app, the organization, absolutely stinks."
The passenger found it confusing that the Celebrity Cruises app has a calendar section that doesn't include their upcoming cruise itinerary details, dates, or any activities they booked for their cruise.
"I want to find out what times the ship docks at which port," GreaseCrow explained. "Why isn't it in the calendar? Why can't I find a single calendar that shows me everything relevant that is happening? Show me the docking times, show me what I have planned, show me the date of those things."

A number of Celebrity Cruises passengers weighed in on the Reddit thread to share similar frustrations. Some also explained that the app is designed to be much more functional for onboard use than pre-cruise planning.
"Long-time cruiser with Celebrity. I sympathize with you. I will say their app is mainly designed for once you get on board and it works very well at that point," ApprehensiveHelp6015 pointed out.
"The app is an onboard tool. The website is the planning tool (generally speaking)," nana1960 chimed in. "The app will populate with more information in the week or so before boarding. Activities/entertainment may not load until you are onboard."
This is common among most cruise lines' apps, which led other passengers in the Reddit thread to note that issues with app usability and functionality, especially pre-cruise functionality, are widespread throughout the cruise industry.

Some cruisers tried to encourage the frustrated Celebrity Cruises passenger by explaining that they've found other cruise line apps to be even less useful.
"I thought the Celebrity app was really pretty useless the first time I cruised with them. I have learned to adjust, especially after dealing with the Princess app. That one is the very definition of 'user unfriendly,'" StableGenius369 noted.
Along with the Princess Cruises app, Norwegian, Carnival, Virgin Voyages, and Holland America Line apps were all brought up in the thread as examples of cruise line apps that some cruisers find cumbersome.

"Now that we're going on an Alaska cruise with Holland America, I am wistfully dreaming about that glorious Celebrity app, in comparison to the dud that is the Holland America 'Navigator,'" Dramatic-String-1246 shared. "We're leaving next week, and the app has very slowly been populating with information, but I still can't find anything there that even tells the hours the dining room is open, and for most programs listed, it doesn't show the location, price, etc."
A few cruisers also pointed out that some of these app issues may stem from cruise lines hiring people who aren't really familiar with cruising to design cruise apps.
"I'm starting to think that it needs to be mandatory that before you do any work for a cruise line, you take a cruise," alcohall183 added.
Commenters who work in IT also attributed cruise app usability issues to a lack of consistency in the user experience between apps and cruise line websites.

While a few passengers may have indulged the moment as harmless or even charming, the prevailing mood on Reddit was of disbelief. As one parent remarked, "I love my child, but not everything special to me is enjoyable for everybody else. "Putting your child's voice over the flight's PA system is more of a personal indulgence rather than a shared joy." 'Quit screwing around' More than a few critics expressed their dismay, such as one person who said the episode should never have been allowed to happen. "Quit screwing around on planes," the person said, adding, "Stop promoting this behavior and shut it down." The situation touched a nerve among frequent flyers, who often find themselves captive to less-than-considerate behavior in tight quarters. As Newsweek reported in a June 2024 article, a YouGov poll revealed that 80% of Americans find it unacceptable for children to play in the aisles, ranking higher in disapproval than seat-reclining, eating pungent foods, or even mid-flight intoxication. Notably, the same poll showed that passengers taking their shoes off or watching videos without headphones were less divisive than letting children roam, or make noise unchecked. She claims she and her former husband had a messy divorce two years before the incident, alleging he 'began an affair" after the birth of their second child. She says he 'fought me every step and it took over a year to finalize.' While she gained primary custody of their kids, she notes that she still needs her ex's permission to bring them out of the country. Recently, the original poster (OP) shares that she was planning to travel abroad to visit family with her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. When she told her ex she wanted to go on the trip with their kids, she claims he said he always wanted to visit her family's country and was coincidentally planning to go at the same time as them. While he was stunned by the news, the OP admits, she wasn't totally in the dark as to why that might have been the case. Another result of the divorce, she writes, was that he was ordered to pay child support, which she claims he has 'never done.' She explains that she signed up for enforcement so she doesn't have to 'badger' him about it, but he's still 'so far behind' that enforcement has 'suspended just about everything they can,' the OP writes. 'They send notices to him when this happens, but I'm sure he doesn't open them,' she claims. She later claims in an edit of the post that her ex can afford the payments, but chooses not to. 'Turns out his passport was revoked due to lack of [child support] payment. He was denied at check-in and there's no way he can get his passport reinstated without paying his arrears in full,' she writes. Once he figured out that he wouldn't be able to crash the vacation, she says, "He said that since he can't go, he no longer gives me permission to take [the kids]." In response to which, the OP "Reminded him that we are past the 72 hrs for him to deny my travel request.' 'I don't think I'm the a------ for continuing our trip; but I am questioning whether I'm an a------ for not giving him a heads up that he should check his passport. I didn't know it was revoked for sure, but I suspected,' she writes. In the comments, the majority of users jumped in to tell the mother she didn't do anything wrong. 'It is not your responsibility to keep track of his passport. He would have received official communication of some sort advising of the block on his passport. Disregarding his mail is 100% on him,' one user wrote. Another added, 'Ex needs to put on his big boy pants and read his mail. You aren't his mom,' followed by a different user who echoed, 'Oh darn, the consequences of his actions are catching up to him. You're not his secretary.' According to the Office of Child Support Services, the U.S. State Department can revoke a passport if a parent owes $2,500 or more in past-due child support payments. It will send the parent a rejection notice in the mail when this happens. It's not a government-issued ID," said Transportation Security Administration Spokesperson Lorie Dankers, who noted that the agency has been very clear about what constitutes an acceptable form of identification for air travel, especially in the context of the REAL ID. The new law replacing the traditional driver's license with a REAL ID-compliant license for domestic air travel went into effect last month after years of delays. In addition to REAL IDs, other acceptable forms of identification include a passport, a U.S. passport card, a Veteran Health Identification Card, and a Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler card like Global Entry and NEXUS. "Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel," the TSA specified on its website, with a list of acceptable IDs. But she warned against depending on a Costco card or any non-governmental card to get you cleared to board a plane. A Reddit post from last month has gotten a lot of traction with many people discussing their experiences. "It's mostly click-bait," Dankers said. She did note that Costco cards and other identification that uses a photo can be used in extreme cases to support those travelers who find themselves in a bind due to lost or stolen identification. Dankers said that in the situation where a traveler only has a non-governmental-issued photo ID on them, anything from a Costco membership card to a library card or student identification, the cards can be used to establish a launching point in the strict and detailed process of proving their identity. It's better than not having any form of a photo ID. "At least we know that some place has given them an ID," the TSA spokesperson explained, while stressing, "That in itself is not considered an acceptable ID but is considered a baseline." That baseline would allow TSA officials to begin a vetting process, involving a series of verification steps to try and confirm someone's identity. But travelers are warned that it's not a process anyone would want to go through, as it's time-consuming, and if the person's identity can't be confirmed, they will be denied access to fly. "There is no upside to doing this because all it does is delay you," Dankers said, adding that it's not only going to delay the traveler without their proper ID on them, but the process can lead to long delays for others. A TSA agent working on your case will affect the workflow at the checkpoint and threaten the schedules of other travelers who are rushing to catch a flight. "It causes our resources to be taken," Dankers said, stressing, "It should only be used in the most extreme of cases." And even then, there's no guarantee your Costco or other non-governmental photo card will lead to a verification of your ID and allow you to get on that flight.
