JPMorgan Chase is taking a significant step into the world of digital assets by allowing clients to buy Bitcoin—despite its CEO Jamie Dimon 's longstanding criticism of the cryptocurrency.'We are going to allow you to buy it,' Dimon said during JPMorgan's annual investor day on Monday. 'We're not going to custody it. We're going to put it in statements for clients.'This marks a notable shift for the largest U.S. bank and signals Bitcoin's growing acceptance in mainstream finance. The bank is expected to provide access to Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), according to a source familiar with the plans. Previously, JPMorgan limited its crypto exposure mainly to futures-based products.Dimon, however, reiterated his scepticism, linking Bitcoin to illicit activities such as money laundering, tax evasion, and terrorism. 'I don't think you should smoke, but I defend your right to smoke,' he said. 'I defend your right to buy Bitcoin.'The move follows similar steps by Morgan Stanley, which since August has allowed financial advisors to offer spot Bitcoin ETFs to qualifying clients. Morgan Stanley CEO Ted Pick recently said the bank is exploring further involvement in crypto markets, especially under what's seen as a more crypto-friendly regulatory environment under President Donald Trump.Since Trump took office in January, regulators have rolled back some restrictions. The FDIC and OCC have withdrawn previous anti-crypto guidance, and the Federal Reserve has partially eased its stance. Although banks can now custody digital assets following the repeal of accounting rule SAB 121, limitations remain on certain direct engagements with crypto firms.Dimon's opposition to Bitcoin has been well documented. In 2021, he called it 'worthless,' and in a Senate hearing last year, he said the primary use cases for crypto were 'criminals, drug traffickers … money laundering, tax avoidance.' At the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos, he called Bitcoin 'the pet rock.'Despite Dimon's personal views, JPMorgan's latest move reflects growing demand from investors and the ongoing normalisation of crypto in traditional finance.: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. 2 years on, garbage waiver charges on papers only in Panchkula
1 2 3 Panchkula: Residents have voiced strong concerns over the municipal corporation's failure to refund or adjust garbage collection charges that were officially waived by the Haryana government for the financial years 2023–24 and 2024–25. Despite the waiver, many residents had already paid the garbage tax as part of their property tax bills for 2024–25, expecting the excess amount to be adjusted in 2025–26 bills. However, to their disappointment, no such adjustment was made, and fresh bills were issued with new garbage tax charges included. The waiver for 2023–24 had been formally approved by the MC, and a second waiver for 2024–25 was announced ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, residents allege that the latter announcement remained only on paper, with no practical implementation. In a letter addressed to the authorities, the Citizens' Welfare Association (CWA), Panchkula, expressed frustration over the situation, stating that residents are being forced to pay the garbage collection fee again, while the previously paid amount remains unadjusted. The association highlighted that many residents had approached the MC and local representatives seeking clarity and resolution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo According to residents, the MC has informed them that refunds or adjustments will only be considered after the new dues are paid. This policy has sparked widespread anger and confusion. CWA President SK Nayar criticised the approach, stating, "Forcing citizens to pay twice and then making them apply separately for refunds is unjust and disrespectful to honest taxpayers." Deepak Arora, a resident of Sector 12A, shared a similar experience, saying he was instructed to pay the new charges first and then apply for a refund. The CWA also pointed out that during his tenure, former speaker and MLA Gian Chand Gupta had publicly declared free door-to-door garbage collection in his official booklet, which has further fuelled residents' frustration. Residents are now urging the chief minister, the urban local bodies department, and the municipal commissioner to take immediate action. They are demanding that the excess charges be refunded without delay and that the practice of collecting advance garbage fees be halted until a transparent and citizen-friendly system is put in place. War clouds darken rate cut horizon despite low inflation
Following Israel's pre-dawn missile strike on Iran on Friday, Sensex plunged 1,300 points. Iran holds about 9 per cent of the world's oil reserves, and as the strike intensified tensions in a key West Asian oil-producing region, crude prices jumped over 13 percent, with the benchmark Brent contract hitting $78.50 a barrel—its highest since January. If tensions persist for over the next 3-6 months, it's likely that crude prices would rise above $82-85; J P Morgan analysts expect the new perch to be as high as $120 in a worst-case scenario. Besides price rise, any disruption in global oil supplies will slow down demand, drive up inflation and exacerbate the prevailing pressure on global markets, which are already reeling under an uncertain US trade policy overhaul. India relies on imports for over 80 percent of its crude oil needs, and a higher import bill will widen the current account deficit, which is expected at 1.2 percent of GDP this fiscal. India also is the largest consumer of gold, which on Friday shot past the psychologically significant mark of Rs 1 lakh per 10 gram for the first time ever on MCX. So the risks of imported inflation remain elevated, just as the RBI indicated last week about a protracted disinflationary process. As it is, policymakers are grappling with global trade policy uncertainties that are threatening to spur inflation and lower global growth. If this happens, it will restrict the central bank's ability to lower policy rates any further.
