Cinematographer Sameer Thahir arrested after ganja seizure, released on bail
Renowned Kerala-based cinematographer Sameer Thahir was arrested on Monday in connection with a recent drug seizure case involving noted directors Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamsa, Excise officials said.

Thahir was arrested under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and later released on bail, they added. On April 27, three individuals—including Rahman and Hamsa—were arrested with 1.63 grams of hybrid ganja from a flat in Kochi rented by Thahir. The arrests were made during a midnight raid following a tip-off.
A senior Excise official stated that Thahir was arrested because the crime occurred in a property rented under his name.
"We had earlier issued him a notice to appear for questioning. Following the interrogation, his arrest was recorded under the NDPS Act, and he was granted bail," the official told the media.
According to Thahir's statement, he was unaware that the directors were consuming drugs. He said several film personalities frequented the apartment for movie-related discussions, and he did not know of any drug use.
"The flat was rented by Thahir. As per the NDPS Act, such an offence should not occur on premises under one's name. That is why action was taken against him," the officer explained.
The Excise department also said they had identified the individual who supplied the ganja to the directors and that an arrest would be made soon.
Rahman and Hamsa, known for several critically acclaimed Malayalam films, were granted station bail after the raid.
The incident comes just days after actor Shine Tom Chacko was arrested in a separate drug-related case following a hotel raid from which he attempted to flee.
Thahir is best known for his work as a cinematographer in acclaimed Malayalam films such as 'Bangalore Days' and 'Big B'.

Delhi: 9-year-old sexually assaulted, killed, body stuffed in bag
In a gruesome murder that unfolded on Saturday evening, a nine-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by her 30-year-old neighbour at his house near Dayalpur in northeast Delhi, after which he stuffed her body in a suitcase to hide it, police officers said on Sunday. The accused went absconding shortly after the girl's family started searching for her. Police have identified him and have initiated a search, officers said. The grisly crime led to widespread outrage in the area, with the family members of the girl and locals staging a protest. Security personnel were deployed in the area to ensure law and order, officers said. According to police and the family members, the girl, a Class 5 student at a local government school and a resident of Dayalpur, left her house at around 7pm to give 'ice to another relative who lives nearby. While on her way, the accused, who lives in a second floor flat in a six-storey building in the area, allegedly asked the girl to come to his house on the pretext of delivering his house keys which had fallen on the road, police said. Locals and her family alleged that he had deliberately thrown the keys to convince the girl to come. Around 7.30pm, when the girl did not return, the family enquired about her from the relative, but they told him that she had not come to their house. The family then began a search. The family said they did not know who the original owner of the house was. The accused took advantage of the fact and absconded, said a police officer, asking not to be named. When the family came to know about the man's disappearance, they immediately broke open the door of his house. On entering, they found a suitcase on the floor. When they opened it, they found the girl's body stuffed inside, with injury marks on her lips and face. 'She was unconscious and unresponsive. She was partially undressed, and bleeding from her genitalia. We rushed her to a nearby nursing home, where doctors declared her dead. On examination, they found that she was sexually assaulted,' the girl's 42-year-old father said. Joint commissioner of police (east) Vijay Kumar said they were informed at 8.41pm Saturday. Police reached the spot, and found the girl had been taken to a hospital by her father, where she was declared brought dead. 'Prima facie, doctors observed visible injuries on her face and alleged sexual assault,' he said. Police suspect that the girl died due to smothering or strangulation. The exact reason will be established on the basis of a pending autopsy report. A case of murder and sexual assault was registered under sections 103 and 66 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Police said the accused is mini-goods vehicle driver, married and is originally from Hapur in UP. 'Teams are conducting raids to nab the accused, who has been identified,' said Kumar. The girl is survived by her parents, grandparents and two younger brothers. The crime sparked outrage in the area — locals and the girl's relatives allegedly vandalised the house of the accused on Saturday night, while on Sunday, nearly 200 people staged a protest at Dayalpur Nala Road, disrupting traffic movement. Security personnel, including personnel from Tripura State Rifles, were deployed in the neighbourhood. Political parties also reacted to the grisly crime. The AAP criticised the ruling BJP — former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said the law and order situation has worsened under the current regime. While Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva too condemned the crime and demanded arrest of the accused, he hit back at the AAP for politicising the issue. 'To reduce these incidents to mere law and order issues is political cunningness.'

Israel says Hamas Gaza chief Mohammed Sinwar's body recovered
The Israeli military recovered the body of Gaza-based Hamas militant group's de facto chief Mohammed Sinwar in a tunnel beneath the European Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday. The IDF made the announcement after it conducted a thorough identification of the body via DNA checks, though Hamas is yet to publicly confirm the death of Sinwar. Mohammed Sinwar, 49, was killed by the Israeli military in an air strike on May 13, in which at least 28 Palestinians were killed and dozens of them were injured, a Hamas-run civil defence agency had claimed. Mohammad Sinwar was responsible for the deaths of countless civilians. He was eliminated in an IDF & ISA strike on May 13. The IDF also put out a video of the small entrance of the tunnel, which was accessible through the freshly dug soil in front of the hospital. IDF spokesperson Brig Gen Effie Defrin confirmed the development and stated that in one of the rooms they found Sinwar's body, which was located in the narrow underground corridor of the tunnel. 'This is another example of the cynical use by Hamas, using civilians as human shields, using civilian infrastructure, hospitals, again and again,' Defrin said.
