Celebrating parent involvement with their child's pre-school with Our Wonderful Parents
Singapore - Mr Justin Doray is a familiar face at his three-year-old daughter's, Islay, pre-school.
The 51-year-old engineer is part of My First Skool@Blk 153 Bisha n parents support group, and he actively helps at various activities and excursions organised by the pre-school.
For instance , he conducted arts and craft activities related to the theme of Christmas to celebrate the festival. He also sang and danced with the children to celebrate National Day, and co- hosted the school's sports day alongside a teacher.
Mr Doray, who only has one child, said: 'I enjoy being with the kids, and it's lovely to see them playing together.
'It's also a learning experience for me to see how other children develop, and also how Islay interacts with the other children.'
Ms Cheryl Lin, the pre-school's principal, expressed her intention to nominate Mr Doray for a new initiative called Our Wonderful Parents, as his consistent involvement and willingness to offer help has a positive impact on the centre's educators.
Our Wonderful Parents is dedicated to recognising and celebrating positive examples of collaboration between parents and their child's pre-school, to encourage parents to be more involved, said Dr Cheong Su Fen, founder of educational consultancy Preschool Market, which organises the initiative .
The initiative is supported by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) and the Singapore Kindness Movement.
The initiative was launched at the first-ever Start Small Dream Big 'Walk for Good: Little Feet, Big Hearts' walkathon in Sentosa on May 11. Over 2,000 people joined the 1.5km walkathon.
Dr Cheong said: 'The Our Wonderful Parents initiative was born from a desire to shine a light on the everyday acts of kindness and collaboration between parents and preschools — partnerships that often go unnoticed but make a tremendous difference in a child's learning journey.'
Dr Cheong, 41, who has a 4-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter , said she has seen many examples of parents volunteering at school events, reading sessions, excursions, among other activities.

For example, her children's pre-school, E-Bridge Pre-School at Corporation Drive, holds an Occupation Day every year where parents from all walks of life tell the children about their occupations.
'When children see their parents and educators working as a team, it gives them a strong sense of security and confidence. They are more motivated to learn and feel emotionally supported,' she said.
' As for educators, parents' insights can help to tailor approaches to better support each child. It also boosts educators' morale.'
The ECDA's chief executive Ku Geok Boon said that research has shown that the collaborative effort of educators, families and the community is crucial for the development of children, especially in their early years.
Pre-schools can nominate parents who exemplify values such as altruism, empathy and respect for the initiative from May 11 to July 11.
Dr Cheong said that all eligible nominees will receive a token of recognition, such as a customised photo frame. Selected stories will also be shared at the initiative's website at ourwonderfulparent.sg, among other platforms.
Ms Jessica Teo, principal of Greenland Childcare@Punggol Drive , plans to nominate at least one parent, Madam Zakiyah Rosli.
Ms Teo praised Madam Zakiyah, 39, for her enthusiasm in supporting the pre-school's activities and her active communication with her son's teachers.
For example for Hari Raya, Madam Zakiyah, her husband and their 5-year-old son donned their festive best and brought festive cookies, among other things, to the pre-school to share with the students as they talked about the festival.
Madam Zakiyah, who is expecting her second child, said her son is a quiet boy, and she is teaching him about confidence through her involvement in his school's activities.
'I want him to feel proud that we want to get involved. It's joyful and fulfilling to see our children learn and grow, and to be more caring and giving,' she said.
The Start Small Dream Big movement was initiated by the ECDA in 2015 to encourage pre-schools to create platforms for children to learn through community service projects, and the movement also raise funds for the President's Challenge.
At the walkathon, the ECDA also unveiled a refreshed version of its Beanstalk website, www.ecda.gov.sg/Beanstalk
The site contains information for educators and parents covering various aspects of early childhood development, such as child development milestones and effective behaviour management strategies.

NDP 2025: Flag flypast in the heartlands; special SG60 aerial displays at Padang and Marina Bay area
SINGAPORE: As part of National Day celebrations, Singaporeans will be able to catch a sight of helicopters and the state flag flying by in the heartlands on Aug 9. Into its sixth year, the Fly Our Flag segment will feature two CH-47 heavy lift helicopters, each escorted by two AH-64D Apache attack helicopters, carrying the state flag across the island from 5.30pm to 6.20pm. There will be two routes, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said on Thursday (Jul 10). The western route will include locations such as Bukit Batok, Woodlands, Choa Chu Kang, Jurong and West Coast. The eastern route will comprise areas such as Seletar, Sengkang, Punggol, Pasir Ris, Tampines, Bedok and East Coast. AERIAL DISPLAYS AT PADANG AND MARINA BAY AREA As part of the pre-parade segment this year, the Red Lions and naval divers will be transported over the Padang and Marina Bay respectively before their descent for the inaugural Jump of Unity. During the parade and ceremony segment, there will also be a series of aerial displays to demonstrate the Singapore Armed Forces' capabilities in commemoration of SG60, MINDEF said. Two special aerial displays will be showcased, it added. Firstly, six F-15SG fighters will conduct an SG60 tribute in a delta formation, with the outer wingmen turning outwards before transiting into full afterburner climbs to symbolise continued peace and prosperity for the nation. The remaining four F-15SG fighters will continue to fly through in a diamond formation. Secondly, four F-16 fighters will execute a diamond cross turn, with the left and right wingmen breaking to the left and right respectively, followed by lead aircraft breaking to the left and the final aircraft breaking to the right. There will also be a state flag flypast across the Padang during the national anthem, and an enhanced salute to the nation during the parade and ceremony segment. The enhanced salute will see six F-15SG fighters executing an enhanced bomb burst manoeuvre with afterburners in a delta formation. This will be followed by four F-16 fighters flying through in a diamond formation to signify Singapore's diamond jubilee over the Padang after the national anthem. The mobile column will also integrate with an aerial flypast comprising 22 aircrafts in four formations over the Padang for the first time at a National Day celebration, MINDEF said. The first formation will be a multi axis flypast where six F-15SG fighters will approach the Padang from two opposite directions and flying past each other before going into full afterburner climbs. Next, a Jet Formation Flypast consisting of one A330 multi-role tanker transport, four F-16 fighters and one G550-airborne early warning aircraft will ingress from the west. The third formation will be a helicopter formation flypast, consisting of one S-70B Seahawk, two AH-64D Apache attack helicopters, two H225M medium lift helicopters and one CH-47 heavy lift helicopter, that will ingress from the south. Lastly, a transport formation flypast consisting of two C-130 Hercules aircraft and two Fokker-50 transport aircraft will ingress from the east to showcase the assets used in humanitarian assistance and peace support operations. 'These four flypast formations will be integrated with different land vehicle packets during the 'Defending Our Nation' and 'Our Strength in Action' segments of the Mobile Column, which will also include one ASTER 30, two SPYDER and two MPSTAR from the RSAF's ground-based air defence systems,' MINDEF said. FLYPAST IN THE HEARTLANDS On Aug 10, there will also be a fighter jet flypast over the heartlands from 6pm to 6.30pm. Four F-16s will conduct a Fighter Island Flypast in a diamond formation through the heartlands of Singapore. 'Each loop will be flown twice to allow Singaporeans to have time to enjoy the flypast,' MINDEF said.

Free national flags for redemption via Shopee in tie-up with NDP organisers
Free national flags for redemption via Shopee in tie-up with NDP organisers SINGAPORE - Households here can now redeem a free national flag each on Shopee, in a partnership between the online shopping platform and the National Day Parade (NDP) organisers. The initiative, called Fly Our Flag, runs until 11.59am on July 15, or while stocks last, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) said in a release on June 27 . To redeem the flag, go to log in with Singpass and choose to have the flag delivered at a cost, or collect it from a collection point for free. 'This effort aims to make it easier for families to come together and proudly display the flag as a symbol of our shared identity and national pride,' MCCY said on June 27 . Singaporeans are encouraged to display the national flag during the National Day celebration period between July 1 and Sept 30, it added. During this period, the rules for flying and displaying the flag are relaxed. The flag may be flown without a flagpole and does not have to be illuminated at night . The flag may be displayed at offices, buildings and residential premises. The national flag should be treated with respect and used 'in an appropriate and dignified manner', and torn or worn out flags should not be displayed, MCCY said. Instead, they should be put in a sealed black trash bag before disposal, and not left visible in rubbish bins. The use of the Singapore flag and national symbols is governed by the National Symbols Act and Regulations. The full guidelines on the display and use of the flag can be found here. Singapore will celebrate its 60th birthday on Aug 9. For the first time, the NDP live show will be extended from Padang to Marina Bay. Themed Majulah Singapura, the 2025 parade will honour the past 60 years of Singapore's nation-building journey, and call on Singaporeans to celebrate the past and build their collective future together.
