‘The odds are astronomical': Canadian man wins lottery jackpots four times

The Guardian2 days ago

How do you say 'lottery winner' in western Canada? The answer is: David Serkin, the name of the cancer survivor from Alberta who won three separate lottery jackpots between August and May to accumulate about $2.5m in prize money.
According to officials, those lucky tickets marked the second, third and fourth times Serkin had won a lottery in his life, a feat that he had vanishingly small chances of pulling off and gained notice on corners of the internet dedicated to charming news stories.
'I know the odds are astronomical, [and] I don't think it'll happen again,' Serkin said in a press bulletin issued recently by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). 'But I still like buying tickets.'
Serkin won draws of $500,000 on 20 August, $1m on 16 November and $1m on 3 May, the last of those coming from a ticket that he bought at a gasoline station in his home town of Lethbridge. To give an idea of the odds he faced, he had a 1 in about 33.3m chance of winning the first of those jackpots, the WCLC's bulletin said.
The media outlet NOW Toronto added that Serkin had won another $250,000 lottery jackpot more than a decade before his newer streak of good fortune.
At least part of his lottery success seems to involve consistently playing the odds. He told officials he has been playing the lottery since 1982 – but he maintained that is because he simply enjoys the ritual of buying his tickets and then checking them.
'You check your ticket and if you win – you're happy,' Serkin said. 'If you don't, you can always try again.
'I'm a cancer survivor and I'm retired, so I am just grateful for all of it.'
Serkin said he bought his latest triumphant ticket on a whim while buying gasoline, figuring, 'What do I have to lose?'
He said his friends' reacted by saying 'not again?!' when he took them out for coffee and informed them he had hit the jackpot once more.
As Serkin put it, his wife was equally incredulous – and, if history was any indication, a memorable vacation was in store for her.
'I took my wife to Hawaii with the last win, and we had a great time,' Serkin said to officials. 'Now, we're going to Newfoundland.'

BREAKING NEWS Taylor Swift sits with Donald Trump ally Wayne Gretzky at Stanley Cup Final

Taylor Swift was pictured sitting alongside Donald Trump supporter Wayne Gretzky at the Stanley Cup Finals in Florida - despite her long-running feud with the president. The pop icon and her boyfriend Travis Kelce made a shock appearance at Thursday night's Game 4 showdown between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. And during the third period, Swift sparked controversy after she was seen watching the final unfold next to both Kelce and hockey legend Gretzky, whose friendship with Trump is well-documented. Just under a month ago, the latter took a random shot at Taylor when he claimed on Truth Social that he is the reason she is 'no longer hot.' Liberals and Swift's legion of diehard fans were therefore not happy to see her in the company of a full-blown Trump ally on Thursday night. 'Ugh with a trumpster so disappointed,' one Swiftie wrote on X. Taylor Swift was pictured sitting with Trump ally Wayne Gretzky at the Stanley Cup Finals Another posted: 'it's unfortunate he's a huge maga trumpie'. 'Would be great if taylor swift could stop associating with trump supporters actually,' said a third. While one simply put along with a Canadian flag: 'Boooooooo' A fifth user, meanwhile, pointed out that Gretzky may well be in his friend's bad books after sitting next to Swift. 'Trump Will not be happy to see his friend Gretzky with Taylor Swift,' they concluded. Gretzky has come under fire both in his homeland of Canada and its contentious neighbor of the United States in recent months over his friendship with the American president. Despite threatening to make Canada the 51st US state, and his government placing tariffs on imports from the country, Trump still has the backing of the four-time Stanley Cup winner, whom he has tipped to run for 'governor' one day.

Glum Tarek El Moussa seen with wife for first time since brutal Las Vegas hotel bust-up as new details emerge

Tarek El Moussa stepped out publicly for the first time since his brutal Las Vegas hotel bust-up last week. On Thursday, the HGTV star, 43, looked glum as he arrived at a Toronto airport with his wife Heather, 37. The couple — who are based in Newport Beach, California — were photographed making their way through the terminal with their luggage. Heather flashed a beaming smile at fellow travelers while Tarek kept a low-profile with a black baseball cap low over his eyes. The pair were later seen waiting near a black SUV at the airport's outdoor pickup spot. The sighting came just hours before new alleged details about Tarek's Las Vegas brawl emerged. has reached out to Tarek's representatives for comment. The altercation occurred last Thursday at The Palazzo at the Venetian hotel between Tarek and another male, whose identity has yet to be revealed, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Witnesses claimed that Tarek drove his knee into the man's head, knocking him out. A source told at the time that Tarek was defending his elderly father when the squabble occurred. The HGTV personality was cited for battery for the incident but was not arrested over it. Tarek's wife Heather was present at the time, but had no involvement in the physical violence. Now, TMZ has obtained a Las Vegas Metropolitan PD report that alleges the violent bust-up was captured on casino surveillance video. According to the report, the fight kicked off after Tarek's alleged victim allegedly bumped into the HGTV star's father's chair at a roulette table inside The Palazzo. The bump-in reportedly upset Tarek's father, who allegedly turned around in his seat to face the man. After Tarek's father turned his back, the man allegedly tapped him on the right shoulder and said something to him that reportedly caused Tarek, who was seated near his father, to get involved. Tarek allegedly got up from his seat and 'charged at the man, pushing him back before the two got into a 'fighting stance.'' As per the police report, Tarek's adversary allegedly went for the star's legs in an attempt to take him down. But Tarek allegedly proceeded to knee the man to the floor. The police then claimed that Tarek 'mounted the man's back and pummeled him with three blows to the head.' After the 'three blows to the head,' Tarek allegedly 'got up and walked away.' The incident was called in as an 'assault/battery' and the alleged victim told police that he wanted to press charges. The report claimed that the man suffered several injuries as a result of the casino altercation, including 'purple and red bruises under the right eye and a cut on the bridge of his nose.' The police said that the alleged victim's account of the fight with Tarek differed slightly from what they had viewed on the hotel's surveillance footage. According to cops, the man claimed he was 'aggressively approached' by Tarek at the roulette table before allegedly being 'assaulted' by him. The man insisted he was trying to defend himself. Tarek was also interviewed by police. He insisted that he only confronted the man to 'protect his Dad due to him having back problem.' However, Tarek stopped speaking with cops after his Miranda rights were read, according to TMZ. In a statement to the outlet on Thursday, Tarek's attorneys David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld said: 'Tarek intends to contest these allegations in a court of law where he will assert his right to self-defense and the defense of his elderly and infirmed father.' Days after the Las Vegas brawl, Tarek reunited with his ex-wife Christina Haack to celebrate their daughter Taylor's middle school graduation. El Moussa and Haack, 41, were joined by Tarek's current wife Heather as they united as a blended family unit. The co-parents smiled while posing with the 14-year-old graduate and nine-year-old son Brayden in a joint Instagram post shared on Tuesday. Christina, who recently finalized her third divorce, wrote in the caption: 'Taylor we are so proud of you and so excited for you to head into the next stage of your life. Our beautiful, smart, incredible, bright light we all love and adore you.' And the proud mom, who also shares five-year-old son Hudson with ex-husband Ant Anstead, added lightheartedly, 'We hope all the mistakes you've watched us make throughout your life help to guide you to a brighter future.' She added a trio of crying laughing emojis before finishing the sweet note, 'Love you, baby. High school here we come!!!' Taking to Instagram Stories, Christina also shared a photo with just Tarek and Taylor, adding, 'We've been through a lot but one thing we've always been is great co-parents.' Tarek, Heather, and Christina starred together in HGTV's The Flip Off earlier this year, putting their tumultuous past behind them. The show is a spinoff of Flip or Flop, which Tarek and Christina made famous during their nine-year marriage. Christina was married to Tarek from 2009 to 2018. She was married to Ant Anstead from 2018 to 2021. In May she finalized her contentious divorce from ex-husband Josh Hall. Following the legal resolution, she took to Instagram Stories to thank celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser. She wrote in capital white letters against a black background, 'Huge thank you to the disso queen @laurawasserofficial and team @ashleymoe22 & @existentialjuju you are all a true class act. 'I loved watching you in action and how you handle everything and everyone with class and grace... I appreciate you all beyond words.' The impassioned note continued, 'I have learned so much under your guidance and I'm grateful to have this behind me. I can't wait to move on with my life and focus on what's ahead and all my blessings.'

Katherine Ryan pokes fun at the realities of pregnancy as she congratulates glam Sophie Habboo on her maternity wardrobe whilst 'I sweat and wish for ankles'

Katherine Ryan poked fun at herself as she congratulated Sophie Habbo on her pregnancy with husband Jamie Laing. The Canadian comedian, 41, took to her Instagram Stories on Wednesday with a hilarious expectations vs reality photo. She shared a snap of Sophie, 30, looking glam at a wedding in a green dress that showed off her blossoming baby bump. In complete contrast, Katherine shared a bare-faced snap of herself as she posed in her kitchen with her baby bump. She penned on the post: '@Sophiehabboo congratulations on your impending arrival and I will cherish a summer of coveting your maternity style while I'm sweating under a hat wishing for ankles.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Sophie reposted the snap to her Instagram Stories, writing: 'Hahaahah!!!' Just last week, Katherine revealed she's expecting her fourth baby. The beauty is expecting with her husband Bobby Kootstra with whom she has been in a civil partnership with since 2019. Katherine is already mum to Fred, three daughter Fenna, two, with Bobby, as well as 15-year-old Violet from a previous relationship. She has been open about her fertility struggles in recent years, revealing in 2024 that she had had three miscarriages in five years. Speaking in November, Katherine admitted she would love to have more kids – but was worried about her age. 'I'm old. I used to think I was going to be the babies' dad because I'm working but actually I'm like their grandmother,' she quipped at the time. 'My back hurts, sometimes I give them treats. I'm like a fun grandma.' The comedian also revealed in March 2025 that she was battling melanoma for the second time. She made the revelation in her podcast, Telling Everybody Everything, explaining she paid to have mole removed from her arm and learned it was cancerous. She added that she required more surgery to ensure the entire mass has been removed. The star is gearing up for another busy period of work, embarking on her Battleaxe comedy tour this month. She also hosts multiple podcasts, including her most recent What's My Age Again? - a 'refreshing and humorous take on ageing, wellness, and self-discovery.' The TV star revealed in 2022 that she had kept her second pregnancy a secret, because she was scared it would lead to her losing work. She was eight months pregnant when she presented ITV's Ready To Mingle, a fact that she hid from everyone. Katherine and her husband Bobby have been together since 2018, but have known each other since they were children as they grew up together in Canada . Childhood sweethearts, the two parted ways initially before rekindling their romance this side of the Atlantic. The couple revealed in the latest series of the family's reality show that they 'wanted the option of having a fourth [child].' The series saw the couple exploring their marriage through therapy before visiting a fertility clinic. Katherine admitted in the scenes which aired in February that she knew conceiving a fourth child would be challenging thanks to both her and Bobby's age. 'It's not that surprising that over-40 women have fewer follicles than we once did,' said Katherine. 'But we talk a lot about male fertility as well, which is on a steep decline. But I would still like a fourth baby. We are so blessed to have the kids that we do have. Having children is not for everyone, but I personally really like making people. I think it's a superpower, if you can do it.' She explained at the time how she and her husband had never previously struggled with getting pregnant but had suffered multiple losses. 'We've always gotten pregnant with the babies quite quickly. I've been pregnant five times in five years, but that also means I've had three miscarriages in five years and the likelihood of that increases as you get older,' she explained. 'You have to find a balance between what you can personally stand and risks you're willing to take. I'm working a lot and I don't know if I could have a medical emergency like that while I'm in Lisbon on Thursday.'
