DA argues Parly erred in processing of Employment Equity Amendment Act
CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has argued that Parliament erred in its processing of the Employment Equity Amendment Act that allows the minister to set racial targets for employment.The party told the North Gauteng High Court on Tuesday that the bill was incorrectly classified and should have included provincial input through the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

- Employment Equity Amendment Act will worsen unemployment, says DA's Zille The DA is challenging a specific section of the act that gives the minister the power to set targets across all sectors, which the party argued was akin to setting racial quotas because employers could be punished if they were not met.The DA said that at the heart of its case were the rigid targets that could be imposed by a labour minister on all employers who employed more than 50 people.
Advocate Ismail Jamie argued that these targets, which incidentally were published two weeks ago in preparation for the act to come into force, were unreasonable when provincial demographics were considered.

In an interview with IOL, Zille confirmed that she has been approached to become the DA's mayoral candidate, but she is in talks with her family regarding accepting the nomination. 'I have been approached to put my hat in the ring for mayor. I am still considering it and consulting my family,' she said. Although no deal was reached, Zille said they have been head-hunting candidates for over a year, with potential ones showing interest. However, she said some potential candidates have said they cannot do the job for the remuneration offered to a mayor. 'If I decide to run, I will have to go through the same gruelling selection process as everyone else,' she said. Image: Supplied / eThekwini Municipality eThekwini Municipality City Manager Musa Mbhele has come under fire with an opposition party calling for his suspension following a recent court order which requires the City to pay a service provider R53 million. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini has demanded that Mbhele be placed on immediate suspension and referred to the Financial Misconduct Board. This demand comes in the wake of a Constitutional Court decision that dismissed the municipality's attempt to overturn a prior ruling, which held it liable for R30 million in damages. The damages stem from the municipality's 2013 decision to cancel contracts with Daily Double Trading 479CC. Courts previously ruled that the cancellation was unlawful, and the municipality's latest bid to appeal was dismissed this week by the Constitutional Court, which found it had no reasonable prospects of success. Lawyers for Daily Double Trading have given the City five days to pay or risk having their assets seized by the sherrif of the court to the value of the judgement. 'The DA believes that, as the head of the city's administration, Mbhele has a duty to safeguard public funds and not act recklessly when ratepayers' money is at stake. The party believes that his conduct in this matter warrants a formal investigation by the Financial Misconduct Board and that he should be suspended from his duties pending the outcome. He had every opportunity to comply with previous court orders related to this matter but refused to, thereby wasting public funds defending an indefensible position," said councillor Thabani Mthethwa in a statement. Once again, I accept the court's decision and await the finalisation of the quantum. I have already initiated a process to review how and why this happened, including the legal advice provided to the City. This will allow Council to determine what consequence action should be taken and how such monies can be recovered,' he added. 'Resilient, and a man of unwavering principle' - President Cyril Ramaphosa pays tribute to anti-apartheid activist, Reverent Tshenuwani Farisani
JOHANNESBURG - Resilience - the word many used to describe the late reverend Tshenuwani Farisani - a respected anti-apartheid activist and former member of Parliament. Mourners, including senior government officials, gathered at the University of Venda in Thohoyandou, Limpopo on Saturday to honour the man who they say never wavered in his fight for liberation. ALSO READ: Dr Tshenuwani Farisani remembered as a dedicated public servant Farisani passed away on Thursday at the age of 76, following an undisclosed illness. President Cyril Ramaphosa, who delivered the eulogy, reflected on Farisani's courage, recalling how he was arrested three times during Apartheid for his activism. In 1987, Farisani went into exile in the United States, but later returned - a move Ramaphosa has described as a powerful symbol of his commitment to justice and freedom. "He was a man of unwavering principle, nothing could sway him from what was right, from his dedication to the cause, the people of South Africa and their total emancipation."
