'A hug from parents costs Rs 1.5 lakh': CA points out the hidden cost of life outside India

Time of India19-07-2025
While social media often paints a glossy picture of life abroad—gleaming roads, skyscrapers, spotless subways, and picture-perfect brunches—CA Nitin Kaushik is here with a reality check that's now striking a chord with thousands. Taking to X, Kaushik shared a brutally honest post titled 'Still dreaming of moving abroad? Here's the reality they don't show you!'—a reflection on the emotional, cultural, and financial toll that comes with chasing the so-called foreign dream.
He begins by addressing the emotional cost. Loneliness, he writes, is a silent tax you pay every day. Festivals lose their warmth, family dinners become video calls, and you blow out birthday candles alone. "A simple hug from parents costs a 15-hour flight and a Rs 1.5 lakh ticket,' Kaushik laments.

He then turns to a detail many Indians take for granted: domestic help. In India, a maid is often a part of daily life. Abroad? Be ready to wash, clean, and cook—often after a full day's work. And if you try to outsource it? Prepare to shell out $25 to $50 an hour.

Kaushik also takes a hard look at healthcare, calling it 'a highway to bankruptcy.' An ambulance ride can cost over Rs 80,000, and even basic tests can leave a dent in your wallet. 'In India, quality healthcare is still within reach for the middle class,' he notes.

Racism, too, isn't left out. Whether subtle or direct, Kaushik says it exists through judgments based on skin tone, accents, or cultural identity. For those raising children abroad, Kaushik highlights the cultural dilemma. Indian values often clash with Western lifestyles, leaving kids caught between two worlds. 'In India, sanskaar comes naturally from the environment,' he says.
Even the financial freedom that often lures people abroad isn't without caveats. 'You earn in dollars, but you spend in dollars too,' Kaushik warns. Every outing, meal, or activity adds up quickly, whereas in India, he argues, a moderate income can offer a royal lifestyle.
He ends with a stark contrast many overseas Indians relate to: identity. No matter how long you live abroad, the question 'Where are you originally from?' never quite disappears. 'In India, you are, and always will be—Apna.'
His final thought? 'Living abroad gives money. Living in India gives meaning.'

Roots and wings: NRK students explore rural Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram : At least 25 non-resident Keralite (NRK) children and an equal number of rural students from the state capital will embark on a three-day guided journey to explore the rural life, cultural diversity and environmental richness of the eastern parts of Thiruvananthapuram district. During the three-day exploration, the NRK students will stay at the homes of their counterparts. Together, they will travel from the source of the Neyyar River to Poovar, where the river meets the Arabian Sea. Titled Verukal-Chirakukal-Akam-Puram (Roots and Wings – Inside and Out), the programme will be held from Aug 8 to 10. It is jointly organized by the Kerala Malayalam Mission and Kattakkada MLA I B Satheesh. General education minister V Sivankutty will inaugurate the camp at the Miyawaki Forest in Puliyarakonam on the morning of Aug 8. "This initiative aims to expose students to the cultural and ecological wealth of this region and help them understand its diversity," said MLA Satheesh. The visiting NRK students have been selected by the Malayalam Mission—an initiative under the state general education department focused on helping Keralites abroad learn Malayalam. Most participants are from Gulf countries. The host students were identified by the Kattakkada Block Resource Centre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! "Travelling through the diverse environments of Kerala, such as the highlands, midlands, and coastal areas, the camp aims to help students understand the agricultural rural life, culture, and linguistic differences. By visiting places like the Aruvippuram Prathishta and the Mahatma Ayyankali Memorial, students could gain an awareness of the history of the renaissance," said Malayalam Mission director Murugan Kattakkada. The camp will focus on several knowledge categories: Forest, river, local, direct, field, sea and art. It begins in the Kottoor forest at the Neyyar River's source and ends at Poovar, where students will meet people from diverse backgrounds. On Day 2, students will visit the Poozhanad paddy fields to experience rice planting and learn about traditional farming tools. At Aruvippuram, Swami Sandrananda will speak on Sree Narayana Guru's philosophy. In the evening, students will visit a dairy farm and participate in a cultural programme featuring local artists. The final day includes a visit to Poovar Pozhikkara to explore marine life, fishing methods and sea songs. Students will also tour the Vizhinjam International Seaport before concluding at the Kovalam Arts and Crafts Village.
