Scientists find blue whales suddenly going silent. Why they think it's happening.

Changing ocean conditions making whale prey scarce are causing the mammals to stop singing, a recent study has found.
Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Cascadia Research Collective and other national institutions spent six years monitoring the acoustic sounds of blue, fin and humpback whales off the California coast from July 2015 to June 2021, according to a study published in February.
Researchers set out to determine whether the frequency of whale songs changed seasonally and whether that frequency was indicative of changes within marine ecosystems.
As a result, scientists found the levels of whale songs among different species correlated with their ability to locate and consume prey.
Marine biologists began the research in 2015, when a marine heatwave dubbed "The Blob" caused a large percentage of krill — teeny, shrimp-like creatures — to disappear. Humpback, blue and fin whales largely depend on krill as a primary food source.
The heatwave disrupted ocean circulation patterns, which impacted the number of cold, nutrient-rich waters that support the small crustaceans, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
This led to a scarcity of food supplies for fish, seals, penguins and whales.
Additionally, increasing temperatures contributed to the spreading of a toxic algae bloom between 2015 and 2016 in the northeastern Pacific, leading to the most widespread poisoning of marine mammals ever documented. In 2015, NOAA confirmed a then-record 53 instances involving whales getting caught in fishing gear.
The following year, the agency found 55 instances in which whales became entangled.
As humpback whales can switch between feeding on krill and fish, like sardines and anchovies, they experienced the most positive song detection trend throughout the six-year study.
However, blue and fin whales, which are larger than humpback whales, did not exhibit the same positive trend. The two species are more specialized in foraging for krill. With the declining prey population, they were forced to spend more time hunting, leaving little time for singing, researchers found.
There is concern for similar patterns to continue as ocean temperatures continue to increase over time. Marine heatwaves also occurred in 2018 and 2019 during the summer months, when whales fatten up on krill to prepare for the rest of the year, according to NOAA.
In a report issued in June, the agency revealed a steep decline in Pacific gray whales. A new count suggests there are about 13,000 gray whales, the lowest number since the 1970s. In 2019, there were about 20,500 gray whales.
From 2019 to 2023, the species suffered from an Unusual Mortality Event that scientists say stemmed from localized ecosystem changes in Subarctic and Arctic feeding grounds. Gray whales rely on prey in the area but changes in the ecosystem caused widespread malnutrition, reduced birth rates and increased mortality.
In other parts of the United States, there are signs that similar issues might be occurring.
Earlier this month, a boat in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, struck a 26-foot-long minke whale that ventured into shallow waters. Preliminary necropsy findings indicated the mammal was thin with an empty gastro-instestinal tract and little digestive material present, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, the organization that conducted the testing, found.

Scientists discover surprising cause of massive flood that unleashed more than 20 billion gallons of water: 'It was so unexpected' Scientists were left perplexed by the impact of an undetected flood in Greenland that occurred over a decade ago. The findings are raising as many questions as answers. What's happening? Unknown to researchers at the time, Greenland experienced a major flood in 2014 when over 24 billion gallons of water burst through an ice sheet 300 feet thick. As Live Science reported, this is the first known instance of meltwater breaking through the ice. The discovery was recorded in a study published by the journal Nature Geoscience in July 2025. The study's lead author, Jade Bowling, said in a statement released by Lancaster University: "When we first saw this, because it was so unexpected, we thought there was an issue with our data. However, as we went deeper into our analysis, it became clear that what we were observing was the aftermath of a huge flood of water escaping from underneath the ice." The phenomenon confounds existing assumptions that meltwater flows to the base of the ice sheet from the surface and then out to sea. The study indicates that the water can move in the opposing direction. Why is the discovery concerning? The research shows that there's a great deal we don't understand about Greenland's rapidly diminishing ice cover. It was only recently that scientists became aware of the existence of subglacial lakes beneath Greenland's ice sheet. Another researcher from Lancaster University, Amber Leeson, said the study was surprising in many ways: "It has taught us new and unexpected things about the way that ice sheets can respond to extreme inputs of surface meltwater, and emphasised the need to better understand the ice sheet's complex hydrological system, both now and in the future." Greenland is home to the largest ice sheet in the world after Antarctica. Because of planet-heating pollution caused by human activity, that crucial ice is being lost at a ruinous rate of 33 million tons every hour. This leads to rising sea levels and more intense extreme weather events; in essence, increasing global temperatures are akin to "steroids for weather." What's being done about Greenland's ice sheet melting? The study provides key insights and highlights the urgency of taking decisive action to reduce harmful pollution and slow the loss of vital sea ice. For 75,000 years, the remnants of a diverse ecosystem of Ice Age animals have lain hidden in the shelter of Arne Qvam Cave in Norway. Scientists have only just begun to grasp the full scope of its contents, which are the oldest evidence we have describing the diversity of animals that flourished in one of the glacial period's warmer stints. This rare and remarkably extensive archive of ancient Arctic fauna covers a wide spectrum of vertebrates, from small mammals like the collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx torquatus) and voles (Alexandromys oeconomus) that scurried across the tundra, marine and freshwater fish, and more than 20 bird species, to the landscape's largest marine mammals, like whales, walruses, and even a polar bear. Related link: "We have very little evidence of what Arctic life was like in this period because of the lack of preserved remains over 10,000 years old," says evolutionary biologist Sanne Boessenkool of the University of Oslo. This find fills a "significant void in our understanding of biodiversity and the environment during a period of dramatic climate change," Boessenkool and team write in their paper describing the finds. The cave was concealed within a mountain until the 1990s, when a tunnel built for mining exposed the secret chamber. Even then, large excavations were not carried out until 2021 and 2022, when the animal remains emerged from the lower layers of sedimentary rock. The collared lemmings were a particularly exciting find: this species is now extinct in Europe, and until now, the only signs they had ever lived there were from Scandinavia. The remains of freshwater fish suggest there were lakes and rivers in the tundra environment, while bowhead whales and walruses would have required sea ice. This probably wasn't present year-round, however, because the harbour porpoises also found in the cave avoid waters that have frozen over. These animals were living in a period of global cooling. The entire ecosystem seems to have depended on melting glaciers that provided fresh water and exposed the ocean; once the landscape froze over once again, the biodiversity disappeared, suggesting the mix of animals were unable to migrate or adapt to the colder, drier environment. "This highlights how cold adapted species struggle to adapt to major climatic events. This has a direct link to the challenges they are facing in the Arctic today as the climate warms at a rapid pace," lead author and Bournemouth University zooarchaeologist Sam Walker says. "The habitats these animals in the region live in today are much more fractured than 75,000 years ago, so it is even harder for animal populations to move and adapt." While many of these kinds of animals can still be found in the Arctic today, they no longer live in the cave's vicinity. When the researchers compared the bones' mitochondrial DNA with those of extant populations, they found none of the ancient lineages had survived when the glaciers froze up again. But, as Boessenkool points out, "this was a shift to a colder [climate], not a period of warming that we are facing today. "And these are cold-adapted species – so if they struggled to cope with colder periods in the past, it will be even harder for these species to adapt to a warming climate," she says.
