Killer at large after double homicide in Lake Winnipeg cottage country: RCMP
Two people are dead and the killer is on the run after a double homicide in Manitoba cottage country, RCMP say.
Police received reports of gunshots on Hampton Road in the Sandy Bay cottage area of the rural municipality of Victoria Beach, about 100 kilometres north of Winnipeg, around 2 a.m. on Friday, they said.
Officers found a Winnipeg man, 29, and a Victoria Beach woman, 41, dead.
Police believe the killer took off from the scene in a white truck and travelled down Highway 59 before officers arrived.
The shooting doesn't appear to be random, RCMP said.
They also said they know the incident will worry people in the small community on the southeast shore of Lake Winnipeg.
"We want to reassure residents, as well as cottagers who may be heading up to that area this weekend, that these murders appear to be targeted, and at this time, we believe risk to public safety is low," RCMP Sgt. Evan Willcock with Manitoba RCMP major crime services said in a news release Friday morning.
RCMP are expected to hold a news conference at 1:15 p.m. CT.

North Battleford councillor resigns after pleading guilty to assault
A North Battleford city councillor has resigned his seat after pleading guilty to assault last month. Ross MacAngus, who was re-elected for a second term on North Battleford council on Nov. 13, 2024, entered a guilty plea to a single count of assault at the Court of King's Bench in North Battleford last month. Battlefords RCMP said last year they received a report of a sexual assault in September 2024. After an investigation, a man from North Battleford was charged with sexual assault on Nov. 26, RCMP said. The City of North Battleford and its council issued a joint statement soon after, saying "transparency is one of the fundamental core values of the city." That statement said MacAngus had been charged with a criminal offence, but without a conviction there was no basis to remove him from council. Last month, the sexual assault charge against MacAngus was withdrawn after the councillor pleaded guilty to assault. Late Monday, the City of North Battleford said MacAgnus had resigned as councillor for "personal reasons." His resignation triggers a municipal byelection for the vacant seat. The byelection must be held within six months, and a proposed date for that vote will be brought forward at a council meeting in September, the city said. MacAgnus will remain a councillor until the end of this month. A sentencing hearing on his assault conviction is set for Sept. 4.

Manhunt continues for suspect in 2024 child sexual assault in Delta
Police in Delta are renewing an appeal for help finding a 26-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a child last year. On Sept. 12, 2024, a child was allegedly sexually assaulted in city south of Vancouver. In May, the Delta Police Department's vulnerable sector unit and Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers issued a public appeal to help investigators locate Gurkirat Singh to stand trial on the allegations. Needles, broken crack pipe allegedly found at popular Dartmouth, N.S., splash pad
Shirley's Splash pad in Dartmouth, N.S., is a popular spot for families during hot summer days, but neighbours in the area say it's developing a reputation for dangerous drug paraphernalia. 'We are cleaning up the park area as well as all around the area for needles and garbage. We are trying to make it a safer place for people to come,' says Darleen Johnson. Johnson is one of three women who live in a nearby shelter. She says they have been hired to pick up syringes and other hazardous items in this area. 'We do this five times a week with the safety team and two times a week with the actual shelter, Tuesdays and Fridays,' says Johnson. The Halifax Regional Municipality said Mainline Needle Exchange does daily sweeps around the park and surrounding area. 'We have Mainline Needle Exchange doing daily sweeps for needles and other hazards at the splash pad, playground and surrounding area. We also have security on site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,' says Laura Wright with the municipality. Gillian Fowlie lives in Dartmouth and she brings her children to the splash pad to play since there aren't many beaches in the area. On Aug. 5, her sister-in-law brought both her stepdaughter and niece to Shirley's Splash pad. Her niece stepped on a 'broken crack pipe' while running down the hill from the splash pad to the swing-set at the playground. 'She called to her mom saying, 'My toe hurts,' and my stepdaughter called out saying there were needles and when my sister-in-law went down with their shoes, she saw needles and a broken crack pipe,' says Fowlie. She reached out to the municipality and the district's councillor and she says the municipality is looking into increasing security around the area. Tim Rissesco with the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission says complaints about needles aren't rare and the splash pad is garnering more complaints this summer than last. 'These large encampments attract drug dealers and other kinds of criminal activities that prey upon the shelter residents who are vulnerable, and it creates criminal activities in the area and that's what we want the municipality and Halifax Regional Police to look after,' says Rissesco. Halifax police were at the park Tuesday afternoon, removing an empty syringe in the portable bathroom after security called them to the site. Municipal workers stopped in shortly afterwards. 'I think it needs constant supervision and park maintenance. You look at other parks in the HRM they don't have 24-hour supervision but some like the Public Gardens and Grand Parade, they have 24 hours and this one may need this as well,' says Rissesco. Fowlie's niece is doing OK but was a little shaken up after the incident. 'She healed really well and is running around like normal, but it was scary for her that day in particular and we obviously don't know the long-term effects as of yet,' says Fowlie. 'It's really important to have areas like this available to children, particularly low income. As well we are in a heat wave right now, kids need to go somewhere to cool down. 'Not everyone can afford to have passes to go to swimming pools and we can't spray sprinklers in our yards because of water conservation.
