Determined to become a doctor, woman to sit for SPM at 36
KUALA LUMPUR: A 36-year-old entrepreneur is proving it is never too late to pursue your dreams, as she prepares to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination this year with hopes of entering the medical field.
Sinar Harian reported that Rusni Shafiya Ruslan will sit for three science papers — Biology, Physics and Chemistry — with the unwavering support of her family and friends.
"Even though I am almost 40, their encouragement keeps me going," she said.
Rusni said her mother was initially amused when she expressed her wish to retake SPM, but her sister, Dr Nur Hanisa Ruslan, a surgeon, has been a strong source of motivation.
"Being surrounded by friends and acquaintances in the medical field also deepened my interest in hospital life and medicine. Hearing their experiences made me eager to learn more about the world of healthcare," she said.
The mother of three said she had to set aside her ambition in the past due to financial constraints and family responsibilities. However, this year, she decided it was time to take the leap.
"My focus now is on retaking the essential SPM subjects. After that, I plan to enroll in a university foundation programme, which I prefer over Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) as it is more intensive and closely aligned with the university environment," she said.
Rusni says it will take about six years to complete her medical studies if everything goes according to plan.
While she has yet to decide on a specialty, she is interested in obstetrics and gynaecology or paediatrics.
"But I am keeping my options open and looking forward to exploring different fields during my studies. I believe that with effort and support, my dream can become a reality," she said.

‘Hadi not stepping down'
PETALING JAYA: PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (pic) has shown no signs that he is stepping down, says party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. This came following a report in Malay daily Sinar Harian that Abdul Hadi had indicated during a recent PAS leaders' retreat that he was stepping away from the post he has helmed for 21 years due to health reasons. There is also reportedly speculation that the president and deputy president's posts might be contested during the party election in September. Takiyuddin said if Abdul Hadi had given such indications during the retreat, he would be the first to know. 'He has not said anything or shown any sign that he does not want to continue, or that he does not want to be nominated again as president,' the Kota Baru MP said when contacted. 'Neither has there been any sign that his leadership is no longer needed. As long as he is capable, he must continue to lead.' In its report, Sinar Harian claimed that Abdul Hadi's wishes to step down have sparked internal discussions about who should take over with some quarters suggesting that it should be the party's number two, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. Takiyuddin said the retreat did not touch on Abdul Hadi's post or his health. 'He did not say anything about relinquishing his post during the retreat. We talked about a lot of issues but this was not one of them,' he said. The Marang MP, added Takiyuddin, is still attending party meetings regularly as president, the last being the party's central committee meeting last month. 'He has never missed any of our party meetings and he even calls special meetings with the leadership when he is back in Terengganu. 'On June 15, he is scheduled to launch a book by (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad,' he said. Abdul Hadi suffered health complications in June 2023 and was admitted to Putrajaya Hospital after experiencing shortness of breath before being transferred to the National Heart Institute for further treatment. Those wishing to contest for central committee posts at the party elections in September must secure a set number of nominations from the divisions. 'For PAS, the top two posts must be occupied by ulama as they are steeped in knowledge about Islam,' said Takiyuddin.

Worker at ECRL site died of heart attack, not from fall, say cops

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The death of a construction worker at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project site in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, on Wednesday was due to a heart attack and not because he fell from a train carriage, say police. Pasir Puteh police chief Zaizul Rizal Zakaria said the Chinese national died while he was pulling cables near the train track, Sinar Harian reported. 'The victim died due to a heart attack, not due to a fall from the train as alleged on social media,' he was quoted as saying. Zaizul said a post-mortem carried out on the victim found no elements of foul play. A video shared widely on social media had alleged that a ECRL worker died after falling from a train.

SPM student left bedridden by brain tumour, says heartbroken mother
ALOR STAR: Mia Orked Lestary Mohd Yusaidil Fitra is supposed to be attending school to prepare for her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations later this year. However, the eldest child of four and a bright student who was actively playing netball and enjoyed mountain climbing, is now left bedridden due to a brain tumour. "I've cried my heart out seeing the condition of my daughter in a coma. She used to be healthy and cheerful," said her mother, Suhaily Karno, 42, in tears. Mia began experiencing hearing problems, unstable walking, and frequent shivering since last October, she said. After several visits to the Tualang Health Clinic, the doctor referred her to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) due to recurring symptoms. "After taking samples and undergoing an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan, my daughter was confirmed to have brain tumours on both the left and right sides of her brain," she said in an interview at their home in Kampung Banggol Chengal, Telaga Mas. Suhaily said her daughter's condition deteriorated, and she underwent eight surgeries between October and the latest one on May 14. She said six of the procedures involved inserting tubes to remove excess fluid from her head, while the other two involved spinal surgery and the removal of pus from her abdomen. "She was supposed to sit for her SPM, but now she can't move, and only shows signs of discomfort by moving her legs or fingers. "When we call her name, only her pupils move. Since her eyes remain open constantly, I have to use tape to help her sleep," she said. She added that she is currently unemployed to provide full care for Mia, while her husband, Mohd Yusaidil Fitra Mat Isa, 43, does odd jobs. The couple have three other children, aged between six and 14. "My daughter needs to see specialists at HSB between five to six times a week. We have to use an ambulance to transport her to the hospital because it is difficult to lift her into a car," she said. She added that Mia is fully dependent on a special formula milk, with one small can costing RM50, lasting only a day, administered via a feeding tube. "I have no choice but to use whatever money we have to buy the milk, even though it's expensive. It's the only nutrition recommended by the doctor for her energy. She also requires disposable diapers," she said. Suhaily said Mia is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the tumour on the right side of her brain on Aug 17. Meanwhile, Cancer Survivors Malaysia (CSM), chairman Zuraini Kamal, who visited the family, donated an air mattress, a phlegm suction machine, cash, and groceries to ease their burden.
