Breaking: Syria will not take part in meetings with Kurdish-led SDF in Paris: State TV

Al Arabiya7 hours ago
Syria will not take part in planned meetings with Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Paris, Syria's state news agency SANA quoted a government source as saying on Saturday.
The source cited an earlier forum arranged by the US-backed SDF that it said was a violation of an accord between the government and the group.
The source was quoted as saying that Damascus would not be involved in negotiations with any side that aims to 'revive the era of the former region.'

Iran opposes Hezbollah disarmament: Khamenei adviser

Iran opposes the Lebanese government's decision to disarm the Tehran-backed militant group Hezbollah, a senior adviser to supreme leader Ali Khamenei said Saturday according to the Tasnim news agency. 'The Islamic Republic of Iran is certainly opposed to the disarmament of Hezbollah,' international affairs adviser Ali Akbar Velayati said. 'Iran has always supported the people and the resistance of Lebanon and continues to do so.' The Lebanese cabinet on Tuesday authorized the army to draw up a plan to establish the state's exclusive control over weapons -- a move that would mean disarming Hezbollah by the end of the year. The decision followed a war between Israel and Hezbollah that left the group's military clout and political influence badly diminished. Characterizing the disarmament push as the result of US and Israeli interference, Velayati said, 'this is not the first time that some in Lebanon have raised such issues.' 'But just as previous anti-Lebanese plans failed, this one will also not succeed, and the resistance will stand firm against these conspiracies.' The cabinet has been under pressure from the United States and anti-Hezbollah parties in Lebanon to commit publicly to disarming the group, amid fears Israel could escalate strikes on Lebanese territory if they failed to act. On Wednesday, Iran's top diplomat Abbas Araghchi, said any decision on disarmament was Hezbollah's to make, adding Tehran supported its ally 'from afar, but we do not intervene.' His comments came hours after Hezbollah slammed the cabinet decision as a 'grave sin', adding it would treat the move 'as if it did not exist.' The Lebanese government has cast disarmament as part of the implementation of the November ceasefire that sought to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah is part of Iran's so-called 'axis of resistance' -- a network of armed groups in the region, including Hamas in Gaza and Yemen's Houthi militants, united in their opposition to Israel. Syria under former president Bashar al-Assad was also considered a key link in the chain, but his ouster last December altered the regional dynamics.

Saudi crown prince invites Pakistan PM to ‘Davos in the Desert' investment forum

ISLAMABAD: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend the ninth Future Investment Initiative (FII) Forum, the annual investment gathering often dubbed 'Davos in the Desert.' The FII brings together global policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs and innovators to explore investment trends, emerging technologies and global economic strategies in line with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. Sharif attended the event in Riyadh last October during a two-day official visit, engaging with Saudi leadership and participating in high-level discussions on economic and strategic cooperation. 'Amb. Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, called on the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister House earlier today,' Sharif's office said in a statement after the meeting. 'The Ambassador handed over to the Prime Minister a signed invitation letter from His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud to participate in the ninth Future Investment Initiatives (FII) Forum to be held in Riyadh from 27-30 October, 2025.' Upon accepting the invitation, Sharif conveyed warm greetings and respect to both King Salman bin Abdul Aziz as well as to the Saudi crown prince. The prime minister also discussed recent regional developments in what the statement described as a warm and cordial atmosphere. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia enjoy close ties, with Riyadh bolstering Islamabad's foreign currency reserves in recent years by depositing money into Pakistan's central bank. The support helped unlock International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout packages and stabilize the South Asian country's external finances. During Sharif's visit to the kingdom in October 2024, the two nations signed 34 memoranda of understanding worth $2.8 billion, seven of which have since been converted into agreements valued at $560 million.

Palestinian Authority slams Israel's escalation in Gaza

RAMALLAH: The Palestinian Authority on Saturday lambasted the Israeli government's decision to expand its military operations in Gaza, as it called on the international community to push for the entry of aid into the strip. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the PA's presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said the Israeli government's moves were 'an unprecedented challenge and provocation to the international will to achieve peace and stability.' He also called on the 'international community, led by the UN Security Council, to urgently compel the occupying state to cease its aggression, allow the entry of aid, and work diligently to enable the State of Palestine to assume its full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip,' reported Wafa. Early Friday, the Israeli security cabinet approved plans to launch major operations to seize Gaza City, triggering a wave of outrage across the globe. Despite the backlash and rumors of dissent from Israeli military top brass, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained defiant over the decision. In a post on social media late Friday, Netanyahu said 'we are not going to occupy Gaza — we are going to free Gaza from Hamas.' Netanyahu faces mounting pressure to secure a ceasefire to bring the territory's more than two million people back from the brink of famine and free the hostages held by Palestinian militants. Israel's arch enemy Hamas, whose October 7, 2023 attack triggered the war, slammed the plan to expand the fighting, calling it a 'new war crime.' Israel's offensive has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, according to Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry, figures the UN says are reliable. The 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
