Liberal, pro-Israel comedian says there's a double standard for celebrities who back the Jewish state

Fox News12-04-2025

To stand-up comedian and pro-Israel activist Daniel-Ryan Spaulding, it seems like people think it's "too political" if celebrities defend Israel, but normal and acceptable when they support Palestinian causes and condemn the Jewish state.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Spaulding discussed his pro-Israel activism as well as his frustration over the double standards in how famous people talk about Israel's war with Hamas.
"Like, if we talk about being 'too political,' you're only 'too political' when you're being pro-Israel… When you're against terrorism, that's when you're 'political,'" he said.
The comic called out several high-profile comedians who have pushed anti-Israel talking points or who have condemned the country's response to Hamas' Oct. 7 massacre.
"Trevor Noah and Jon Stewart and Dave Chappelle and Rami Youssef – they say horrible things about Israel, and they blood libel Israel all the time," he said. "And there's no consequences for them. And no one ever accuses them of being too political. They don't face any consequences for it."
On the other hand, Spaulding, who is not Jewish himself, noted how pro-Israel figures are considered controversial for speaking out.
"I don't understand when Michael Rapaport or I or Amy Schumer or Jewish comedians who are actually, like, terrified to even say anything – we're 'too political' because we're against terrorism? That's bizarre to me."
Spaulding, a gay Canadian who is currently in Israel connecting with the Israeli hostages who have been freed from Hamas, described himself to Fox News Digital as an "accidental activist." Though he has built a stand-up career and toured the world, he recently settled in the United States and began using his comedic powers to spread awareness about antisemitism.
"And since I arrived in New York, I ended up getting involved in advocacy work for Israel and for the hostage families and speaking out against Jew hatred," the comic said.
Spaulding went viral in the days after Hamas' terror attack in Israel, calling out leftist anti-Israel agitators. In one of his most liked videos on Instagram, the comedian mocked LGBTQ protesters for thinking that Hamas would appreciate their help in condemning the Jewish state.
"Maybe you should reserve your anger for the radical Islamic Nazi death cult that started this war by massacring 1,500 innocent people and doesn't give a s--- about its own people and uses them as human shields. But that's a little scary to say, right? Because those are the people that will actually come and kill you," Spaulding said in the clip.
He captioned the Nov. 1 post with the declaration, "Hamas is a Terrorist organization, not a resistance movement. You can support the Palestinian People, and NOT support Hamas, and NOT be an Antisemetic[sic] piece of s--t. Call for Peace, not Hate!"
Spaulding told Fox News Digital about what led him to share those first pro-Israel/anti-Hamas videos.
"Oh, I was horrified at seeing people support Hamas. It horrified me. I couldn't believe it. And I thought it was hilarious seeing these lesbians I knew in Brooklyn defend them. And so, that was sort of my first viral video."
The comedian explained why he believes people in America have come to have such a backwards view about Israel and Hamas.
"Well, it's really 20 or 30 years of this, like, festering in academia and festering online. And it's this taboo thing that we're never supposed to talk about. And so, people never got the truth and got the information," he said, adding that "a lot of Americans don't travel."
The other reason he gave is that "people just hate Jews."
"Antisemitism is a very powerful thing, and, like, Israel is sort of the Jew. Like, if we think about what antisemitism means now, it is Israel as the Jew and people turning against Israel and hating Israel."
Famous Jewish-American figures, like "Friends" star David Schwimmer or "Saturday Night Live" legend Jon Lovitz, have wondered why more Jewish people haven't defended Israel since the terror attack.
When asked why he believes people aren't speaking up, Spaulding said it's because they're scared.
"After October 7, there were a number of Jewish celebrities that spoke out, but they got shut down, and they got hit with bot attacks, and they get scared, and got threatened," he said.
"So, sometimes people get scared, and they want to ignore a problem. I know what that was like. I was over 400 pounds," he continued, referring to his mindset before his recent major weight loss.
"It's very easy to just shut your brain off and disconnect and pretend that a problem isn't there when it's right there in your face."
Spaulding said these threats didn't get him to shut up. "They try. Like, especially if you're going to talk about Israel, like, people will try to smear you and character assassinate you and do whatever they can to get you to not talk about Israel. But yeah, you can't stop me."
The comedian also mentioned he was surprised when he saw who did stand up for Israel.
"And where the societal support was coming from was Christians and people on the right and Republicans like Mike Huckabee, and all of these people that – most Jews are, like, Democrats and are liberal," he said, adding, "And I certainly had never really met a Republican before or talked to a Republican. But I heard Mike Huckabee speak about Israel and I was like, 'Oh my God, what a kind man.'"
"I never thought I would like Mike Huckabee more than Jon Stewart."

Israel has boarded Gaza-bound aid ship carrying Greta Thunberg, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition says

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) has said the Israeli military has boarded its Gaza-bound aid ship carrying Greta Thunberg and that communication with the boat has been lost. The group posted a photo on Telegram early Monday local time, showing members of the crew of the 'Madleen' sitting inside the boat wearing lifejackets and with their hands in the air. No Israel Defense Force soldiers can be seen in the image. In an earlier post, the FFC said the ship had come 'under assault in international waters.' 'Quadcopters are surrounding the ship, spraying it with a white paint-like substance. Communications are jammed, and disturbing sounds are being played over the radio,' FFC said on its Telegram channel. Israel has repeatedly vowed to stop the aid boat from reaching Gaza. 'I have instructed the IDF to ensure that the 'Madleen' flotilla does not reach Gaza,' Israeli defense minister Israel Katz said on Sunday. 'Just a short while ago, two Israeli drones were above the FFC Madleen and dropped or sprayed some sort of white chemical on the Madleen. Now the Madleen seems to be surrounded by Israeli naval commandos,' Huwaida Arraf, Freedom Flotilla organizer and steering committee member and US human rights lawyer, told CNN. In a video livestreamed from the boat and posted by the FFC, activist Yasmin Acar showed a white substance on the deck, saying it had been dropped on the vessel. Acar was later heard saying it was affecting her eyes. Before the live stream ended, Acar could be heard saying the Israeli military was communicating with the board Israel vowed on Sunday to stop the aid boat carrying Thunberg and other activists on board from reaching Gaza. The 'Madleen' is part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an organization that has campaigned against Israel's blockade of Gaza and tried to break the siege by boat. Climate activist Thunberg, 'Game of Thrones' actor Liam Cunningham and Rima Hassan – a French member of the European Parliament - are among those on the Madleen. 'We know that it's a very risky mission and we know that previous experiences with flotillas like this have resulted in attacks, violence and even cases of death,' Thunberg told CNN on Saturday. Israel's Foreign Ministry posted video on X showing a Navy staffer issuing what appears to be a radio message to the vessel. 'The maritime zone off the coast of Gaza is closed to maritime traffic,' the unidentified Navy staff member is heard saying. She is later heard saying aid needs to be delivered through 'established channels.' In a statement, the ministry said 'unauthorized attempts to breach the blockade are dangerous, unlawful, and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts.' 'We call on all actors to act responsibly and to channel humanitarian aid through legitimate, coordinated mechanisms, not through provocation,' the ministry added in a statement on Monday local time. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Newsom Seeks Control Of National Guard From 'Dictator' Trump; LAPD Puts City On Tactical Alert Over ICE Protests

The conflict between California Governor Gavin Newsom and Donald Trump over ICE raids in Los Angeles and the federalization of the National Guard has escalated today as the LAPD put the City of Angels on tactical alert over anti-deportation protests and resistance. 'We didn't have a problem until Trump got involved,' the Governor bluntly said online of the state of affairs in LA. More from Deadline Judge Denies Corporation For Public Broadcasting's Motion In Trump Case, But Ruling Still Allows For Board Members To Remain - Update ABC News Suspends Terry Moran Over X Post That Called Trump Official Stephen Miller A "World-Class Hater" '60 Minutes' Correspondent Scott Pelley Says Trump Lawsuit Settlement & Apology Would Be "Very Damaging" To Reputation Of CBS And Paramount In a whirl of events Sunday in a very tense LA, Newsom and Chief Jim McDonnell both are trying to grasp back control of the state and city from the tough-talking and heavy-handed Trump and stop things from escalating – with the Governor calling POTUS a 'dictator.' Earlier today, Trump took to his usual bully pulpit of social media proclaimed in his hyperbolic manner that 'a once great American City, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals.' Going on a factually challenged rant, the former Celebrity Apprentice host added: 'Order will be restored, the Illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' An anti-ICE rally moved this afternoon from City Hall to the nearby federal building where over 100 detainees (including young children) rounded up by masked agents in the past two days have been housed in dank basements without access to lawyers. In response, top cop McDonnell moved first Sunday to keep protesters and the heavily armed National Guard and Homeland Security forces apart and prevent further clashes. Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to LA, and, under a questionable legal basis, the Secretary of Defense has put Marines at Camp Pendleton on alert. The last time the National Guard put on the streets like this in LA was back in 1992 in the uprisings following the acquittal of four LAPD cops over their filmed beating of Rodney King. At that time, it was then Golden State Gov. Pete Wilson, a Republican, who requested the deployment. Two-term Democrat and potential presidential contender Newsom never requested this weekend's deployment. In fact, the Governor argued with Trump to do the exact opposite, in a call the two had before POTUS went to a UFC fight in New Jersey late Saturday. 'The City of Los Angeles is on Tactical Alert.' the LAPD announced around 2:30 p.m. PT as tensions rose. As well as raising the use of force, the move puts all officers on notice they could be called into duty ASAP and keeps those already on shifts working. Soon afterwards, an unlawful assembly was declared to clear the area around the federal property, where thousands were gathering in protests. Disbursement non-lethal shots, flash bangs, and gas canisters were heard being fired over the crowd by the cops. In conjunction, as protesters and CHP cops clogged up the 101 freeway in downtown LA, local streets were being closed down to keep traffic and more people out of the area Following usual police procedure, arrest began quickly of those closest to the line of officers. There are rumors that a curfew cold be put in place soon, but law enforcement sources that Deadline spoke to said that is 'not in the cards, not being considered right now.' 'To have this here is really just a provocation and something that was not needed in our city,' LA Mayor Karen Bass told CNN Sunday afternoon rejecting Trump's assertion that the troops were needed and as the tactical alert was put in place. 'We're still recovering after five months from the city's worst natural disaster in decades and now to go through a trauma like this that is really traumatizing the whole city, because everybody knows somebody in a city where more than 50% are Latino, this just so chaos that is not warranted nor needed in the city of Los Angeles at this point in time.' The incumbent Mayor and ex-Democratic Congresswoman also noted that the role of the National Guard is to 'protect federal property,' not to swarm the streets of the sanctuary city or aid anticipated further harsh ICE raids against undocumented Angelenos and others. Mayor Bass is set to give a press conference on the state of affairs in LA today later this afternoon. Accusing Trump and team of trying to 'manufacture a crisis in LA County' and 'create chaos' with the injection of troops that literally no one asked for, Gov. Newsom formally made a move Sunday to regain his control of the Guard, for what it's worth at this point. 'I have formally requested the Trump Administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles county and return them to my command,' the longtime Trump foil and MAGA punching bag said online in a letter to Sec. Pete Hegseth less than 24 hours after Trump seized the Guard over the governor's objections. 'There is currently no need for the National Guard to be deployed in Los Angeles, and to do so in this unlawful manner and for such a lengthy period is a serious breach of state sovereignty that seems intentionally designed to inflame the situation, while simultaneously depriving the state from deploying these personnel and resources where they are truly required,' the letter says. Newsom makes a point of noting that proper procedure of the order was never being passed on to him previously. Setting the stage for a legal missive in the next few days, Newsom adds that the move to bring in the Guard was not 'ordered or approved by the Governor of California,' as required, Part of a protocol between the state and the feds, Newsom's Guard letter to the much criticized Defense Secretary and former Fox News host follows a letter from every Democratic Governor around America slamming Trump for his 'abuse of power' in LA. Mocking Trump and his crew all day, Newsom himself took it further Sunday, calling Trump's actions to be 'the acts of a dictator, not a President.' Unlike when news of the National Guard order went out last night, all the cable newsers had wall-to-wall coverage Sunday of what was going down in LA.
