Springboks' depth on display amid injury concerns to key players
Erasmus has turned to Andre Esterhuizen and Edwill van der Merwe to step into key roles, citing recent form and squad depth as reasons for the adjustments.
De Allende will not feature in this weekend's Springbok lineup due to a back niggle picked up during training. Erasmus confirmed that the experienced midfielder has been managing discomfort for the past two weeks and will continue to train under medical supervision.
'Andre has been strong for us in the last few seasons,' Erasmus said. 'It was an easy decision to name him alongside Jesse in the midfield.'
Esterhuizen's physicality and recent consistency make him a reliable choice as South Africa look to build momentum early in the Rugby Championship.
On the wing, Cheslin Kolbe has recovered from his own niggle and returned to training. However, the Bok coaches have chosen to give the speedster additional time to build full match readiness.
'Cheslin trained with us last week,' said Erasmus. 'But we decided to exercise caution and give him extra time at training before selecting him.'
With Kolbe unavailable, Edwill van der Merwe earns a start after a strong domestic season. His pace and sharp finishing have impressed the coaching staff, and Erasmus is eager to see how he performs at international level.
'Edwill has been in good form this season,' Erasmus said. 'It will be good to see what he brings in this match.'
The changes reflect a measured approach from Erasmus, balancing player welfare with the demands of high-intensity competition. Both De Allende and Kolbe are expected to return to selection contention soon, while Esterhuizen and Van der Merwe have the opportunity to make their mark.
The Springboks open their campaign with a home fixture against Australia, who arrive on the back of encouraging performances against the British & Irish Lions.

International student athlete Jesse Ndjeka's journey to Olympic fencing dreams
He told EWN that during his time as a student-athlete, he had learned to become comfortable with uncertainty. 'In that, I understand that motivation isn't even half of what is needed to succeed. And as a result, I've learned discipline, patience, and developed an unwavering faith in my capabilities.' On how the South African fencing scene compares to the rest of the world, he said, 'In all honesty, the SA fencing scene pales in comparison. We have the talent capable to compete with the rest of the world but we just don't have the infrastructure to consistently develop that talent. The rest of the world also just beats RSA in sheer numbers of events and competitors.' The South African qualified twice for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAAs), won Cleveland State University's first-ever Central Collegiate Fencing Championship Individual title, and achieved a preliminary top 64 result at the 2024 Vancouver World Cup. 'The support structure I have with me consists of my family back home, my teammates here with me in the States, and all the friends and coaches I met along the way. My family helps me remember where I've come from and to keep my core values intact, my teammates help me stay disciplined and focused on the bigger picture, and my coaches and friends keep me tethered to real life and put things into perspective. Really blending my athletic aspirations with my life goals.'

'The fire in me is fading' – Sundowns forgotten star on career struggles
Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Maseko has posted about his recent struggles at his club. The 21-year-old star has found it difficult to break into the Downs team since joining from SuperSport United two years ago. He only played a total of 14 league matches in three years for Masandawana and scored just once. His future at the club remains in doubt after he was left out of Mamelodi Sundowns' squad, which played in the FIFA Club World Cup. 'I don't know when it started, but lately it's like the fire in me is fading. I still train like my life depends on it, still push through every tired muscle, mental battle, but inside it feels empty,' Maseko posted on his Instagram page. 'The game that once lit up my soul is now different, heavier, and colder. It's a strange kind of pain, giving everything you have but feeling unseen. You tell yourself to keep going, but each day chips away at you. Your confidence starts to crumble, your joy fades, and the person you used to be feels like a memory you can't reach anymore. 'The hunger, the excitement, and the love for the grind have been slipping away piece by piece, now hope feels like something far off in the distance. 'I'm left wondering if I've ever get to that place again, this is what it's like to lose your spark and the hardest part is still showing up every single day, hoping you'll find it again,' the Sundowns winger said. Maseko was not featured in Downs' two matches this season and his exit looks more likely. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
