Buncrana drowning victim Matt Sibanda was ‘truly special' with ‘generous heart', funeral hears

's Lough Swilly, was a 'truly special soul' who 'made others feel seen, valued and heard', his funeral has heard.
'That is a rare gift ... and one that touched everyone who knew him,' said Mr Sibanda's uncle, Buhle.
The 18 year old died
earlier this month
with his friend, 16-year-old Emmanuel Familola, after they went into the water off Ned's Point in Buncrana, to retrieve a football.
Originally from Zimbabwe, he, his mother and younger sister were living in the Co Donegal town.

His funeral Mass took place in St Mary's Oratory in Buncrana on Saturday morning.
Pupils from his school, Crana College in Buncrana, formed a guard of honour outside the church alongside students from Emmanuel's school, Scoil Mhuire.
Relatives from Zimbabwe travelled to Buncrana for the funeral. His family visited the scene of the tragedy before the service on Saturday.
Other family and friends from Buncrana and from the migrant communities in Donegal and Ireland were also present.

The requiem Mass began with the playing of the Zimbabwean national anthem.
In his homily, parish priest Father Francis Bradley said Mr Sibanda was known for 'his quiet but sociable presence, his smiling face and his ability to always listen and respond with a deeply respectful and generous heart'.
He and his family arrived in Buncrana in late 2023.
'He was undeniably wise and good beyond his years, with an ability to sit with other children reading, debating and learning with great enthusiasm, always curious to know a little more.'
Fr Bradley said the teen had 'profound respect' for his mother and was 'a good and kind boy, a humble kid who would play with other children, always looking out for his sister'.
'He adored her, and she him. He would watch her when his mam was working. He taught her to ride a bike, he would play piggyback with her and chase her after school.'
Mr Sibanda loved healthy food, exercising and lifting weights, Fr Bradley said, adding that he was a powerful swimmer.
Fr Bradley also spoke of the impact of the double tragedy on the town of Buncrana, describing the loss of the two teenagers as 'an open wound, a sore blow for us all'.
Mr Sibanda's uncle Buhle thanked everyone for coming 'to honour and remember' the life of his 'beloved' nephew. He said 'the pain of losing him so suddenly ...is something we are still struggling to understand'.

He described his nephew as 'a humble young man, never one to seek the spotlight, never one to boast'.
'He moved through life with a quiet dignity and deep respect for others,' he said.
'Though his life was far too short, Matt left us with memories and moments that will live on forever.'

Drugs worth more than €8m seized following investigation by Garda and Polish police
More than €8 million worth of drugs were seized in Ireland as part of a joint investigation by the Garda and Polish police. The joint investigation team was established in January 2022 to target a network of transnational Polish criminal organisations with leadership, transport and distribution cells based in Ireland, Poland and Spain. Firefighters tackle blaze near IFSC in Dublin city centre
Dublin Fire Brigade has responded to a fire near the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Dublin city centre. The fire broke out on Tuesday evening. Three fire engines along with senior officers were at the scene at George's Dock in the north inner city. Motorcyclist dies following crash in Co Mayo on Sunday
A man has died in hospital following a collision between his motorbike and a car in Co Mayo on Sunday. In separate incidents, a Garda motorcyclist is being treated in hospital in Dublin after a collision with a car in Dundrum on Tuesday, and a man in his 20s is in a serious condition after his scrambler collided with a street light in Ashtown. Sunday's crash happened at Castlebar Road, Newport, at about 4.50pm. The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 50s, was taken to Mayo University Hospital where he subsequently died. No injuries to others were reported. A man aged in his 60s was later arrested in connection with the incident and subsequently released without charge pending further investigations. READ MORE Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage who were travelling in the area of Castlebar Road, between 4pm and 5pm on Sunday 17th August 2025, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí. An appeal has also been made for witnesses to Tuesday's crash, which occurred shortly before 10am. Gardaí said they and other emergency services were alerted to the incident involving a car and Garda motorcycle. The on-duty Garda member was taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Welfare supports have been made available to the Garda by local management. No other injuries were reported. The Upper Churchtown Road, Dundrum, which had been closed for a period of time, has since reopened to traffic. Gardaí further seek witnesses to the scrambler collision, which occurred on the Royal Canal Way, Ashtown Gate, Dublin 15 at about 5pm on Sunday. The driver was removed to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown and later transferred to Beaumont, where he remains in a serious condition.
