Saina Nehwal
Saina Nehwal, born on March 17, 1990, in Hisar, Haryana, didn't just smash shuttlecocks—she smashed stereotypes too. While many would expect a superstar athlete to have endless trophies and textbooks, Saina's school story is refreshingly straightforward: She studied only till class 12.
But don't let that fool you; her journey from classrooms to global courts is one packed with grit, focus, and some serious shuttle skills.
Nehwal's schooling kicked off in Hisar at the Campus School, CCS Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), from lower KG to class three. The university clearly thought she was a big deal even back then—they went ahead and named the Saina Nehwal Institute of Agricultural Technology, Training & Education after her. Talk about making an early impression!
From shy student to badminton powerhouse in Hyderabad
When her family moved to Hyderabad, Nehwal switched many schools–first to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Vidhyasharam School, then to the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) School in Rajendranagar.
Though she was a bit shy in class, she was nothing if not a serious student, keeping her eyes glued to both textbooks and shuttlecocks.
Juggling schoolwork with rigorous training at the famous Pullela Gopichand Academy, Nehwal's discipline was next level. She kept up with classes through to class ten and didn't let the shuttlecourt madness distract her from studying.
Class 12 done and dusted, but the accolades kept rolling
Finishing off her schooling at St. Ann's College for Women, Hyderabad, Saina hung up her school bag and grabbed her racket full-time.

But the education world wasn't done with her yet. In 2016, SRM University in Chennai honoured her with an honorary doctorate, celebrating her as much more than just a sports icon.
Mastering the art of balancing books and badminton
While most teens struggled with homework and hangouts, Saina was busy managing training sessions and textbooks with equal flair. Training at the Gopichand Academy while acing schoolwork took sheer dedication and a knack for time management worthy of any top student-athlete.
A legacy that hits the mark in education and sports
Saina Nehwal's academic journey might have stopped at class 12, but her sports career soared sky-high. She became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic badminton medal in 2012 and reached the world number two ranking on July 15, 2010. From classrooms in Hisar to global podiums, her story is one of determination, talent, and breaking barriers. The Saina Nehwal Institute of Agricultural Technology, Training & Education at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University stands as a lasting tribute to her unique blend of brains and badminton brilliance.

Ryne Sandberg. Image via: Griffin Quinn/MLB Photos via Getty Images Ryne Sandberg, one of baseball's most respected second basemen and a beloved Chicago Cubs icon, passed away on July 28 at the age of 65 after a valiant fight with metastatic prostate cancer. He was revered for both his stellar career and quiet leadership. Sandberg leaves behind an indelible legacy not just in Chicago but across the entire baseball world. Ryne Sandberg, aka Ryno , passes away at 65 Known affectionately as 'Ryno,' Sandberg became the heart and soul of the Cubs for over a decade and a half. Originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1978, he arrived in Chicago through a now-legendary trade in 1982, and it changed the franchise's fortunes. In his rookie season, Sandberg flashed his potential by hitting .271 with 32 stolen bases. But it was the 1984 campaign that truly launched him into stardom. He batted .314, led the National League in runs and triples, and captured the NL MVP award. That same year, he authored one of the most iconic games in Cubs history — the "Sandberg Game" — where he blasted two game-tying homers against Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter in a dramatic 12-11 win over the Cardinals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Egypt: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo "Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans," said Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts. "His dedication to and respect for the game, along with his unrelenting integrity, grit, hustle, and competitive fire were hallmarks of his career." Sandberg's career accolades are as impressive as his work ethic: 10 All-Star selections, nine Gold Gloves, seven Silver Sluggers, 282 home runs, 2,386 hits, and a .285 lifetime average. He also held the record for most home runs by a second baseman at the time of his retirement in 1997. In 2005, Sandberg was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His induction speech was a masterclass in humility and sportsmanship: 'I was taught you never, ever disrespect your opponent or your teammates or your organization or your manager — and never, ever your uniform,' he said. He coached in the Cubs and Phillies systems, managed the Phillies from 2013–2015, and later served as a Cubs ambassador. In January 2024, he revealed his cancer diagnosis. By August, he was declared cancer-free, only to face a heartbreaking relapse later that year. Yet, Sandberg continued to inspire. In February 2025, he made an emotional appearance at Cubs Spring Training, where Manager Craig Counsell said, "People like Ryno... make an impact like when they step in the room — and that's what Ryno has done for us already." His statue outside Wrigley, unveiled on the 40th anniversary of his signature game, now stands as a reminder to the man who played the game the right way and lived the same way, even in the face of his toughest battle. India's 88th GM: Divya scripts history

New Delhi: In a historic moment for Indian chess, 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh etched her name in the record books by winning the FIDE Women's World Cup 2025. Facing off against veteran Koneru Humpy in an all-Indian final in Baku, Divya clinched the title 1.5–0.5 in the rapid tie-breaks, becoming the first Indian woman to win the coveted crown. The classical games played over the weekend had ended in tense draws, with both players showcasing resilience and elite-level play. In Saturday's opening game, Divya, playing with the white pieces, built a commanding position but allowed Humpy to equalise late. The second game on Sunday was more balanced, though Divya admitted she had 'wandered into trouble for no apparent reason' before managing to hold on. But the tie-breaks were where the young sensation flipped the script. After the first rapid game ended in a draw, the second saw Humpy crack under time pressure, making critical blunders that Divya capitalised on. With nerves of steel, Divya closed out the win to become the 2025 Women's World Cup champion — the fourth Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title and the country's 88th GM overall. 'It was fate,' said an emotional Divya after the final. 'Before the tournament, I was thinking that I could maybe earn a Grandmaster norm here. And in the end, I became a Grandmaster.' Divya's victory is even more remarkable considering the odds. She came into the tie-breaks as the underdog — Humpy, a two-time World Rapid Champion and currently world No. 5 in classical chess, was widely expected to dominate in the faster format. In contrast, Divya was ranked No. 18 in classical, No. 22 in rapid, and No 18 in blitz on the FIDE women's list. This win crowns a sensational rise for the Nagpur teenager, who just last year clinched the World Junior Championship title. She also played a pivotal role in India's gold-medal run at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where she secured individual gold on her. bord.
